Update – the problem was with the LinkSys driver. Ignore the linksys.com site to get the update for WinXP Pro. Go to public area of http://ftp.linksys.com – it’s there. Also, shut off cable modem for 30 seconds or so after configuring IP addressing – otherwise it will not pick up the change.

Beware of the “XP Compatible” claims. I purchased Panda AV Titanium after reading rave reviews. It worked fine under W2K, and Panda claimed it would do so under XP Pro. Despite using the latest versions, I continue to get random e-mail transmission failures in Outlook 2002 due to offending Panda background checking file. I have to disable fulltime AV checking (the whole point of the purchase!) in order to send and receive e-mail.

      Hi, Phil

I checked and my settings are the same as yours. A little more experimentation revealed that the problem occured only with a specific file, no matter where I saved it (a folder, the desktop, under different file names, etc.) In all cases with that file, it would not load with a double click, be found with recent documents, or attach to an email. Yet, the file was fine if I loaded Word first and then loaded the file, wherever it was!

Very strange, but thanks for the tip.

I don’t want to take the chance of a bad install of XP to get to its msconfig. I will keep trying to sort this out within W2K first.

      thanks

      Thanks, Moniq.

I changed my nic driver to the one you mentioned, and while my network works fine, the MS XP upgrade diagnostic still reports the same error. It finds the following to be incompatible: “BCAITDI DMI TDI”. That is not a file (my NIC driver is the one you suggested). A search on that string, in quotes and including the spaces, yields nothing. There is some sort of 3Com DMI service running, though. Any other ideas?

After trying just about everything (replace profiles, delete and recreate e-mail accounts, hack the registry, etc. (all with elevated MS tech. support), we found a cure, but not the cause.

This is what worked for me. Go to control panel – add/remove programs. Click “change” on MS Office XP. Go to the Outlook section and click “not Available”. Reboot and reinstall just Outlook 2002. Outlook Today worked properly. My case may be different than yours, because my true Today was lurking behind what became a blank Today. It would flash briefly before being overwritten.

MS had no prior occurences on record of this particular problem. They elevated the tech supp for me, and we got it resolved. No one knows what caused it.

I realized that I had made a mistake in applying OLDDog’s advice (left out the outlook.wvw before the outlook.htm. I went back and did it properly. Outlook changed the main page line to “res://E:MSOfficeOffice101033outlwvw.dll/outlook4.htm” (note the front end and last forward slash).

Now, when I click on Outlook today, there is hard disk and network activity followed by a brief screen that is correct with my current appointments, etc. quickly followed by a “new” screen that has the normal Outlook Today format but no data under the headings.

I’m getting closer to a resolution, but wonder whether a reinstall of Outlook 2002 is needed.

Sounded like a good answer, but I have no such file either on drive c or e, where I keep my applications. I think I did the damage when I deleted the default folder set up by the reinstall of Outlook. There is a set of steps one must take to point to another existing *.pst file instead of the default. I think I did it in the wrong sequence, blowing away the default Outlook today folder.

Thanks for your advice on Clean Boot and other thoughts. I do not dual boot. Have done so in the past, with a pure DOS, then W98, then W2000. More recently, did so with just W2000 and WinXP. I’ve tried it with dual app installations to different partitions (one for use by each OS) and double installations to the same partition. Also learned to keep pagefile in a separate dedicated partition, and all data in partitions separate from OS and apps.

If the definition of a pessimist is “an optimist with experience”, I qualify. Too many messed up file pointers with dual booting if a utility was allowed to run amock, or other unintended consequences.

Panda antivirus seems to work well with XP and is highly rated. I bought the Titanium version. I wish I could find the paper I wrote the exact STOP error on. It was a string of four words separated by underlines (big help that is!) with one of the words being “IRQ”. I have only two USB ports on the old DeskPro, and three devices, so I use a powered hub by DLink. I discovered that unplugging the hub and the zip drive from the chassis ports stopped the problem in W2000 during bootups. The STOP error would occur shortly after the loading your settings message, before getting to the desktop..

I discovered that the problem lies with my Panda antivirus running in permanent protection mode (e.g. watching all emails). Disabling allowed me to send a test message. Now I will reactivate and check my system. If no viruses/worms found, I’ll check with Panda for support.

      Thanks for your help.

Not sure what you mean, Dave. My email account settings work intermittently as previously explained, so I don’t know what I would change. When it works, the “test settings” button shows everything is fine. The next time, it cannot connect with my POP3. It’s like the sun suddenly deciding to rise in the west and set in the east.

I have the builtin firewall disabled, and am using ZoneAlarm. The weird thing is that everything works once, then fails unless I quit and restart.

You and DaveA are right. One of the most “annoying” things about this forum is receiving daily notifications of this man’s idiotic pronouncements. He’s like the Everready Bunny – he just keeps talking. If I don’t like WinXP, I won’t buy it. Not he case with LC, though. If I don’t like his repetitive, boring statements, but want to hear what other people think, I still have to be notified about what he says. Which brings me to a question. Is there anyway in Outlook 2002/WOPR to filter this guy out.? Some sort of rule that will send only his words to the trash barrel but not those of the people I want to read?

It worked! The invisible file was in a “sent to” view under Draft folder. Thanks for the great help.
