    • in reply to: Tools for testing your Internet speed #1493688

My Comcast here in NH advertises 105 Mbps. Using either Speedtest, Speakeasy, or Comcast testers gives me about 90 to 94 Mbps. But if I bypass my router and plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer I will get 105 or very close to it- to my surprise. Just checking; I’m very consistant with the 3 testers I mentioned – Download – 94.75, 94.91, 93.14. Upload – 12.10, 12.04, 12.08. (all via my router) I’m either lucky or just getting what I pay for.

Depending on the max speed of your router (IE: 100 Vs 1000) that could be your very top end limiter for only getting 94 Vs 105.

On my wired machines I can speedtest or Xfinity test very close to the max 105 or better (and am going through router) when the network is not loaded, but on my laptop via wireless I won’t hit over 40, even though the laptop & router rated wireless speeds are much higher & are only about 5 feet apart.

On my work machine on same router through corprate VPN, only hitting 40 – 45 on a good day so plenty of room left the the rest of the house
(up is only 5, so when uploading a 1 gig file, time for lunch or dinner!)

    • in reply to: What Microsoft needs to include in Outlook 2016 #1488214

Why o why is Outlook the only Windows application that does not have a CANCEL button option when you click on the X or to close the application? The only choice you have is to empty the Deleted items folder.

There are many times when that upper right X gets clicked on in error or you are typing in something & the program focus gets moved to Outlook and your keyboard sequence may just be what it takes to close the program.

That simple option has been missing from every version of Outlook. So much for having a consistant UI across the Office applications. That’s my only wish list item 🙂

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1198422

Thanks for catching my typo. It has been corrected now.

Yes I meant that I can NOW shutdown without having to logoff first.

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1202209

Ok, after using the MS knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222

and then using the FixIt option, logging off & then a re-boot, I am now able to shutdown, restart & the other options now while logged in.

I am guessing something got [messed up] in the local security settings back when I could not change the password until I re-joined the domain.

That article above & it’s tool basically ressets to default many of the security settings. May not be the best solution for everyone that gets into this situation, but may help.

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1202954

I should also add that when I run:
      gpedit.msc

      Then Go to
      Computer ConfigurationWindows SettingsSecurity Settings
      Local PoliciesUser Rights Assignment

Double click on “Shut down the system”

It is listing the groups as the *S-1-…. Also the buttons for ADD USER or GROUP and Remove are also disabled. It does not matter what admin account I am logged in, bit it local or connected to the domain.
When comparing this woth some other groups, it does appear that the Admin & other groups may have gotten removed?

Not to bood in safe mode & see what happens, yeach!

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1200471

      So far, still no luck.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555449 – This is to edit the setting in gpedit.msc – User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesStart Menu and Taskbar This is set to not configured.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303070 – This is about adding it back to the Classic menu. does not help in this situation.

      I did look at this:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy
Expand the Local Policies and click “User Rights Assignment”
Shut Down The System is applied to all user groups.

Also under the Security Options – Shutdown allowed w/o having to log on is also enabled.

      I also tried adding – [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
      “NoClose”=dword:00000000

JoeP, sorry that did not work either.

I think for now I will create 2 desktop shortcuts, one to Shutdown & one for Restart as that option is also missing until I (or someone else!) can figure out what needs to be changed as the logging out & then shutdown is getting old.

Update: When I try & use the shutdown.exe command I am now getting the message “A required privilege is not held by the client.”

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1196729

DaveA, no out admins have not applied such a policy, but thanks for the idea.

JoeP, thanks for the link. I will take a look at the registery setting that file attmepts to modify when I get home.
      [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer]
      “NoClose”=dword:00000000

Currently my XP desktop that does not have this issue also does not have this particular key entry.

    • in reply to: Shutdown Option not available, only Logoff User #1196394

Hi Peter, I am familiar with that one & even have it as a shortcut on my desktop computer giving me a 30 second window (helps when remote desktop to that machine to force a re-boot).
      (%windir%system32shutdown.exe -r -t 30 -c “Rebooting computer”)

Unfortunatly to me this is not as “graceful” of a shut down as I would like to do on this machine & would like to restore the shut down options from just Logoff (Shut Down, Restart, Stand By, Hibernate).

After I logoff & ctrl-alt-delete again I do then have these options. I just don’t know where to make the changes to get those options back when logged into the machine.

      Thanks.

    • in reply to: Importing Data causes Numeric Overflow on Linked table #1180980

And that “solution” is just what I am trying to get away from!.

      Thanks.

    • in reply to: Importing Data causes Numeric Overflow on Linked table #1180948

2003 (I have corrected the post).

    • Have you checked whether the system date settings (in Windows) are the same on your and her PC?

That we have verified. I think we may have found a strange corruption where a macro used to re-map linked tables is showing the correct linkage when you hover over the table, shows correctly in the Linked table manager, but for some reason the query seems to be pointing to a archived version of the tables in a different folder. She normally does not re-copy the front end as she adds other tables to her copy. The queries in question have not been changed for at least a year. (may also be some funky issue between librarys between our 2 machines such as when LEFT(), RIGHT() all of a sudden stops working)

When we created a blank DB & then imported everything over, things seem to work ok. Unfortunatly I also use Groups a lot, so all of my Groups will need to be re-created 🙁

Strange as the Repair / Compact never corrected this, I am not seeing in on my machine but it shows on her machine.

At this point I think this is a closed issue. Hopefully things will be normal next month!

    • We have not tried the Export – Import queries method yet as basically we have been just copying the same database from my machine to hers using a network data share as the files are too large to email & we are quite some distance apart.

We can give that a try, thanks for the idea.

    • in reply to: Compare Database Versions (Access XP) #1088043

Not that this reply will help you 3 years later but I have a similar need. This is even with a split database where 1 copy of the front end is on a network share. It is encouraged that the end users copy the front end to their machines for performance & due to one local table where the users can paste data & then run queries against that data, but not everyone does.

What I do is manual. I am only looking for items (Table, Query, Form, Macro, Module,… but not data or changed items) that someone added to the network version of the front end so I can review if I need to copy these back to my “master” copy of the front end. (if someone made changes to the design & did not let me know or request me to do that, too bad!)

In both databases I will go to Tools, Options and select to display System Items.

I will then open, copy & paste the contents of the table MSysObjects from both databases into an Excel Spreadsheet. Each DB’s version on a different tab.

I sort the data by the TYPE and then by NAME.

On the one from the network share I will do a VLOOKUP back to my master version on the NAME column. Any that don’t match, I will take a look at & import into my Master version.

      ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Actually while thinking about it, I just created a query where I do this compare from a linked MSysObjects on the network version to my local or master database doing a left join on Type & Name where the local Name is null. (helps not doing a stare & compare)

Here is my query – SQL View:
(database name is Playground, renamed linked MSysObjects to MSysObjects – Network Playground and then set the Hidden flag in properties)

      SELECT [MSysObjects – Network Playground].Type, [MSysObjects – Network Playground].Name, [MSysObjects – Network Playground].DateCreate, [MSysObjects – Network Playground].DateUpdate
      FROM [MSysObjects – Network Playground] LEFT JOIN MSysObjects ON ([MSysObjects – Network Playground].Name = MSysObjects.Name) AND ([MSysObjects – Network Playground].Type = MSysObjects.Type)
      WHERE (((MSysObjects.Name) Is Null))
      ORDER BY [MSysObjects – Network Playground].Type, [MSysObjects – Network Playground].Name;

      Hopefully this will help someone!

    • in reply to: Change Linked Tables source (2003 SP3) #1087884

Yes this is working for me now.

I made a few slight changes to better suite the application & to continue changing the links even if there are 1 or more links that can’t be updated. I also added a msgbox to display if all were refreshed or list those that could not be:

Public Function RefreshLinks(strOldPath As String, strNewPath As String) As String

‘ Update path of linked tables. Return Results in a MsgBox.

      Dim dbs As DAO.Database
      Dim tdf As DAO.TableDef

‘ Loop through all tables in the database.

      Results = “”
      Set dbs = CurrentDb
      For Each tdf In dbs.TableDefs
‘ If the table has a connect string, it’s a linked table.
      If Len(tdf.Connect) > 0 Then

      If Not Left(tdf.Connect, 4) = “ODBC” Then

      tdf.Connect = Replace(tdf.Connect, strOldPath, strNewPath)

      Err = 0
      On Error Resume Next
      tdf.RefreshLink ‘ Relink the table.
      If Err 0 Then
      Results = Results & tdf.Name & vbCrLf

      ‘Exit Function
      End If
      End If
      End If
      Next tdf

      If Results = “” Then
      Results = “All Completed”
      Else
Results = “Not Refreshed” & vbCrLf & Results
      End If

RefreshLinks = Results ‘ Relinking complete.
      MsgBox Results, vbInformation
      End Function

Thank you very much for your code examples & help (again),

      John

    • in reply to: Change Linked Tables source (2003 SP3) #1087832

Hans, thank you for the example. If I also have some ODBC connections (which I failed to mention), would this cause the code the fail?

If I use the Immediate window with your code:
      ? RefreshLinks(“C:Documents and SettingsHANDLE.GLOBALMy DocumentsAccess2k”, “ServerNameShareName”)

      I am still getting False.

There is not a folder name in my data share. All of the files are in the root of the data share.
If I look in MSysObjects in the Database Field, this is how the few network paths are currently listed ServerNameShareNameDatabase.mdb (and the same goes for the local files).
