If I want to erase the entire hard drive (before discarding the computer), is it possible to run “Erase” from a USB stick?

      Thanks.

When you say “safe mode”, does that mean: reboot into safe mode?

As far as having the latest driver … where can I see the version or date of the driver I’m using now?

    • in reply to: NVidia driver problem #1299601

Actually it’s worse … can’t reboot…get a blue screen, Windows has shut down, infinte loop caused by
nv4_disp (same sort of problem I had a few years ago).

Can I simply go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, and remove both

      NVidia drivers
      and
      NVidia Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers?
(no details about “last used” etc. are shown)

Will there still be something generic to run the display?

      Thanks.

    • Don’t see it in the Startup list in msconfig, although I’m not sure what it would be called.

Is the Status Monitor a Windows program or a specific Samsung program?

    • Took your advice and downloaded recent (Jan. 11) driver from the Samsung site, but I still get the same error message when I print.

      Thanks for the replies.

Since the Quick Access Toolbar icon size can not be changed, is it possible to create icons on the ribbon for functions such as save, print, print preview, etc.?

    • in reply to: HP DeskJet 930C: all three lights blinking #1264332

It’s a genuine HP 45 cartridge (unless it’s a very good counterfeit imitation???).

Full disclosure: had used the printer for years with a PC; bought a new PC which turned out to be a lemon; bought an iMac and installed shareware drivers; discovered that black cartridge was dried up or empty; bought and installed new black cartridge; was able to print for a few days, but then encountered the situation described in my original post.

      Any suggestions?

Thanks. Tried this, but printer can’t be turned off … lights resume blinking (simultaneously, not alternately). Pulling the plug and re-connecting also doesn’t solve the problem.

    • in reply to: Criteria for wireless router? #1237949

Thanks to all who have responded.

My critical question at this point is: can WPA2 be enabled using the Apple Airport Extreme with a Windows PC?

CNet review said that one could NOT use WPA2 encryption.

      Apple says:

      Note:
WPA security is available only to AirPort Extreme wireless devices; AirPort and
AirPort Extreme clients using Mac OS X 10.3 or later and AirPort 3.3 or later; and to
non-Apple clients using other 802.11 wireless adapters that support WPA. WPA2
security requires firmware version 5.6 or later for an AirPort Extreme Base Station,
firmware version 6.2 or later an AirPort Express, firmware version 7.3 or later for a Time
Capsule, and a Macintosh computer with an AirPort Extreme wireless card using AirPort
4.2 or later. If your computer uses Windows XP or Windows Vista, check the
documentation that came with your computer to see if your computer supports WPA2.

I’ve tried several times to parse this paragraph … I think it means the answer is yes (provided the computer supports WPA2), but I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there who has activated WPA or WPA2 encryption using the AirPort Extreme with a Windows PC.

      Thanks.

The brands readily available here (Netherlands) are Apple, Linksys, Sitecom and Asus.

Top of the line Linksys seems to be WRT610n dualband, but it got very mixed reviews on CNet compared to the Apple Aiport Extreme.

The Apple may not be ideal for use in a PC environment, but the easy setup and adequate features are seductive.

      Any comments?

      Fellow Loungers:

Thanks for your advice. I backed up the Western Digital files from the external drive to the hard drive of my computer; converted the drive (which had, in addition to the WD files, an incomplete backup that I had made)to NTFS (Windows found it “dirty” and required that that I run CHDKSK / F first); and was able to back up my entire hard drive using Windows Backup.

      Thanks again!

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Is this like formatting a drive, which wipes out all of the data? The drive comes with some Western Digital software on it … do I need to back it up elsewhere, convert to NTFS, and then copy to the drive?

PS Checked “Problem Reports and Solutions”

      The reported problems were
      March 10 Windows Update

March 11, 14, 14 Internet Explorer (“stopped working”)

March 11 McAfee (makes sense … I uninstalled it)

March 13 Windows Driver Foundation — User-mode Drive Framework Host Process
“The Windows User-Mode Driver Framework detected that driver host-process did not complete a critical operation within the allowed timeout period.”
      [which driver?]
Lots of info in report (Exit Code 103, Operation 0, Message 6, Bucket ID 158183225, etc.) … which info helps me identify the source of the problem?

March 10 (3 times) Windows Modules Installer (2 times WindowsWcpOtherFailure3; one time CbsPackageServicingFailure)

      How should I proceed? Thanks.
