      Not sure I understand this one. Can you confirm then that if you select “Entire Drive (All data will be erased)” the Operating System will be left more or less as it was installed with just any downloaded updates? and any other installed progs will be deleted.

      Sorry you didn’t get a response in the past week; most users here probably are more familiar with MS Word.

      Yes, well things have changed in this Lounge of course. Thanks for suggestions, apparently when inserting a table you need to select “format none” otherwise the table keeps reverting to its origial format style

      @TheGadgetFixer —

      You got lucky with that Malwarebytes install. Many of today’s Rogues block MBAM (Malwarebytes) from reaching its updates server for updates. Then the only reasonable solution is to reformat and reinstall Windows. In the original post here, it looks like the friend is not going to allow this. But it would be the best thing to do now. That computer is now part of a botnet, and is keylogging and transmitting personal information with every website visited. In all likelihood, anyway. Tragic, really.

      Not so…..because after a few days the computer became totally useless…full of unknown things and was put into early retirement. Complete format of HDD and re install of windows. I couldn’t help a passing remark “I told you so ”

      As far as Windows Live Messenger goes you turn this off in the Tools /Options menu. You have to be signed in to the account though to make the changes. I believe this setting is similar in Yahoo and other IM programmes

    • in reply to: usb wireless adapter for older laptop #1187952

      Hi all!
      Recently upgraded an older Gateway Solo laptop for my god-daughter that’s using a PCMCIA card for wireless-g networking. I found a usb wireless dongle that I think might get better range and just work better overall, but the pc is old enough that it only has usb 1.1 ports; upgrading these is not an option I care to pursue. So I wanted to see if anyone here might know if using the usb 2.0 wireless adapter in the legacy port would be worth the effort.

      Appreciate any input…

      I tried a USB 2 wireless adaptor on an old Dell running XP home with only USB 1.1 port and apart from the “this device is USB 2 can perform faster” warning…it functioned ok and couldnt see any difference in speed or range from the PC wireless caed I originally used.
