Great! Glad to here all is well.

    • in reply to: Word startup error #513524

I have typically seen this type of error occur do to a problematic Word AddIN, or some bad code in a startup template. Take a look at the following document:
WD2000: How to Reset User Options and Registry Settings

Using that document, first, do the steps listed under: To Start Word by Using /A
Note, the command must have the Quotes and a space before the /A to work.

If word starts without the error, then it is most likely an addin or template.
Next, follow the steps under: To View Installed COM Add-ins, and use the button to disable, one by one, the addins, to see if one is the culprit.

Next, the steps under: To Rename the Normal Template

If neither of those work, I would look at the other steps listed, but my guess is one of those two will (assuming of course, that starting Word with the /A switch worked)

      Don,
RE: Q174893, the only real hard part is translating the path, so

      %systemroot%system32regsvr32.exe /u %systemroot%system32docobj.dll

would translate to: (on a default NT install)

      C:WINNTSYSTEM32regsvr32.exe /u C:WINNTSYSTEM32docobj.dll
(adding or removing the /u part, depending on the step you are doing)
Make sure you include the spaces where needed.

Also, take a look at the following (since you mentioned it followed his profile, this may apply):

Open Windows Explorer (not IE). Select View->Folder Options. Scroll to Microsoft Word Document, select it, and click Edit. At the bottom of the “Edit File Type” box, is a check box for Browsing in the same window.

See if that affects it. Let me know if you have any questions.

      Don,
See the below document, which discusses turning on/off this feature. There are other problems that can creep up, that could cause this behavior, but this document is the most likely fix.

      MS KB Q162059

Please note, these are the NT Options:
8 = open in the native application
0 = open in-place in the browser, exception being PowerPoint, always open in-place.
(I have heard, but not tried using 9 for Powerpoint to open in Powerpoint, in NT)

Rnaapp is loaded by dial up networking. After you close the connection, it can stay loaded for about 15 minutes or so, it supposedly helps you reconnect quicker while it is loaded.
I have end tasked this program before, without freezing. It might of been just a one time thing for you.

Sorry, I missed one of your machines was Win2k

      For Win2k, do the following:
Go to START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, COMMAND PROMPT. This will open a DOS window, where you see the C:> prompt, type:
IPCONFIG then press enter. Write down the IP Address.

Do the same from each machine (use the previous WINIPCFG for 98/ME). Once you have the IP address from all 3, on each one, open a command prompt (Start->Programs->Command Prompt for 98), and at the C:> prompt, type:

Ping 198.1.100.1 (replacing with the IP Address one of the other machines. Do it for each of the other two, and do it from each machine. If you get a timeout error, then the machines were unable to “talk” to each other. If you get a list of connect times, they could talk. If they are all able to ping each other, then there is a setting that is wrong somewhere, and it can be tracked down. If the ping does not work, then there is a Basic network setup/card issue. Once you have the results, post them, and it will help guide you further.

      Kevin,
You can try “crawl” instead of “fly”, it is slower, but sometimes not slow enough.

    • in reply to: Deleting “Location to publish web” #513104

The following registry key contains the list:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftFrontPageWebsPublished

You can right click and delete any value you wish to remove.

Please make a backup of the system registry before doing this.
If you are not familiar with registry editing, please let me know, and I can post more detailed instructions.

    • in reply to: ME edition…volume control #513102

      The simple answer:
In Control Panel, click Sounds and Multimedia, and check the box at the bottom of the Sound tab.

      The more involved one:
If the above option is ‘greyed’ out, or already checked, there is a good chance there is some file corruption with your sound files, or rarely, the volume control itself. If checking the box does not work, I would try reinstalling your sound drivers, to see if that helps.

    • in reply to: ME #513101

      Jules,

That type of error (gdi.exe) is often the result of video driver problems. Have you hecked to see if there is an updated driver for your video card available for ME, it might help to upgrade it.

      Scott,
Can you give a little more detail.
How are they not recognizing each other?
Does each have a unique IP address? (check this by entering WINIPCFG at start->Run)
Can you ping the other machines? (open a Command Prompt, enter PING 192.168.1.100 ‘replace with the IP you want to ping’)

This is the normal way to get rid of the “pre-dial” screen:
Go to Dial-Up Networking, right click the connectiod(your specific dial up connection) and select ‘Properties’, click the ‘Scripting’ tab, if there is a script listed, make sure you check the ‘minimized’ area. Then click the ‘Configure…’ button, click the ‘Options’ tab, remove the check mark from the ‘Bring up terminal window before dialing’ box, and ‘OK’ your way out.

Here’s a User Demo, from the Symantec FTP Site (it’s for Winfax 9 / Access 97, but should get you started.)
