      Randy,

I welcome your input on this thread, and I’m sure this issue will be a rather hot topic as release dates near.

I am rather dismayed however that you felt it necessary to make your point by posting a sarcastic and unwarranted attack on me.

If you reread the thread, you will see that there was some confusion as to what Microsoft was actually going to do, and how it would be implemented. The links I posted merely presented the information that MS has made available so that everyone could benefit from knowing what MS was planning.

In my rather brief post, there was no endorsement of this policy, nor condemnation, it merely presented some more facts to consider.

I will have the software soon, and then will be able to look at and test the new registration wizard features, and I’m sure I’ll post my opinions then.

      ok, just rounding up is:

      =ROUNDUP(ValueOrCellToRound,-3)
    • in reply to: nearest 1000 #1779316

      Try this:

      =ROUND(ValueOrCellToRound,-3)

You can replace them by toggling field codes on, to replace the actual link; and field codes off, to replace the link text.

When you tried the steps from Epson, did they work at all?

What were your answers to the questions at the top?

      [indent]

First try printing with the printer directly connected to the computer without any switchbox, Zip drive, scanner or any other parallel port device connected to the same port. If this is the problem then install a second parallel card for LPT2.
Make sure to use a printer cable no longer than 6 feet.

Next make sure your hard disk has plenty of contiguous space 30 – 50MB available to spool the data to be printed. Run Scandisk to make sure there are no crosslinked files and then run Defrag to see if your hard disk needs to be defragmented.

      Phil,
I’ve seen that version get installed before, maybe this applies:

Encarta World English Dictionary 2000: Setup Installs an Earlier Version of Microsoft System Information

Either way, you are probably safe renaming the older one, and testing to see if you have any problems, before removing it.

It seems MS is not very good about checking for older versions of msinfo, or, installing the newest.

    • in reply to: Upsizing to SQL Server #1779253

      Dave,

I don’t think there are any right answers to your question. Every situation is different. To get you started, here is the MS opinion:

When to upsize a Microsoft Access database to Microsoft SQL Server

There are two obvious reasons that could prompt you to upsize, such as:

Reaching DB size limits (1 GB in Access 97 / 2 GB in Access 2000)
Desire for a feature that is not present in Access

I think most other reasons would be subjective to the project you are upsizing.

To look at your other questions:
      2. It is not an absolute that performance will increase, in many situations, yes, and noticeably, but it is very possible to have a decrease; again, it really depends on the project, and the layout of your db.

3/4. The general reasons listed in the MS document are the reasons to upsize, but it all falls back to what specific needs and features you require. If you were to outline your database here, and how it generally operates, it might be possible to give further guidance to you.

      5. SQL Server is a pretty big beast. The learning curve is high, and the maintenance is far greater than an Access Db. It is not always possible to just install SQL Server, upsize your db, and then run it. Settings need to be tweaked, and code/procedures/queries may need to be changed. Upsizing to SQL Server can therefore be a major undertaking, not to mention a big financial one. Again, if you outlined your needs, the forum may be able to guide you further.

I’m not sure how you should proceed from here. The reinstall of msinfo32.exe is the MS recommended procedure for this error.

Since you have now done this, it might be best to wait, and see if the error recurs again. If it is still occurring regularly, let me know, and we can try some other things (just not sure what those other things are right now )

    • in reply to: Need All Setup Error Messages #516237

Windows 95/98/Me Setup Error Message List has a list of errors for the actual setup program.

There are so many things going on beyond that one area, such as hardware detect errors, video errors, etc., that I do not think you could find a comprehensive list of all the possibilities.

If all is running right with Norton, it works in the following way: (a very basic description)

With email scanning enabled, your incoming email is scanned PRIOR to reaching your email program, and, if a virus is found, is is prevented from ever getting to your email program. (this is why the email server address is a norton one, and not your real one. Norton runs an intermediate mail server, to check your email first. This scan checks the email and any attachments.

If email scanning is disabled, you still have some protection, it just means a virus containing email will make it to your email client. If, for instance, you got a virus in an attachment, the message would show in your email client, but, when you try to open the attachment, Norton would detect the virus, and warn/stop you (assuming you have Norton set up correctly, the default settings would do this).

So, even with disabling email scanning, you still have plenty of protection, just not as much as you would with it enabled.

Also, one thing that is essential to protecting you from email viruses, is going to http://www.windowsupdate.com, and downloading and installing any security updates for your email client. (If you have Outlook 2000, there is a lot of reasons NOT to install the security update for it, I’m sure there are many threads here on that, as well as some pretty good info in Woody’s newsletters)

I show the file that comes with Win98SE as:

      Windows 98 Second Edition 143,360 4/23/1999 win98_46.cab

This does not mean your version is incorrect. It is rare that an exe file gets corrupted, several times like you say, but could happen. Also, if you’ve run your virus checker on it, then it is probably fine. There are several versions of msinfo32 around, including one that ships with MS Office. If you perform a filefind for:

msinfo*.* you may see several folders and versions of the program.
Msinfo also uses several files in the background, that could be the problem, but if replacing the EXE file worked, at least temporarily, then I doubt it. My best guess is there may be some sort of software conflict, you might try the following:
      To Run System File Checker:
(You will need your Windows 98 CD for this process)

      With your mouse, Goto
      Start
      Run
      Type “sfc” (No Quotes)
      Click OK

      Select “Scan for Altered Files”
      Click Start.

This will verify all your windows files, and fix any potential file conflicts in msinfo.

Since the problem does not occur a lot, you may need to see how things run after this.

Try this for the sPrefix Line:

      sPrefix = "E" & Format(Date, "yy") & Format(DatePart("y", Date), "000")
    • in reply to: Msinfo Program Problems #1779145

A couple of things, in Win98, the msinfo file is msinfo32.exe not msinfo.exe (it was that in 95). So first, are you sure you are using the right one? And entering the right command?

Also, what file does not open? Do you have the exact error message?
