Not sure if this applies to your specific model, but according to the manual (which you should probably have), Fn + PrtSc should do it:

      http://www.manualowl.com/m/Toshiba/Satellite-S855-S5378/Manual/327408?search=print+screen&x=-779&y=-491

      That did it and thanks……..
Just have to relearn the buttons to push  😀

BTW……there was no manual with the computer and since it’s a stand alone ( no internet connection ) the Help files were useless.

But since you so graciously posted a link to a download for a manual, I now have one.

      You guys rock!

      Again
      Thank you much……

edit……apparently with this model, printscreen does not save to the ‘Pictures’ folder as with Win 8 instals in other model computers.

Surely, you don’t expect the screen to actually print. Eh?
That particular function has not worked since the DOS days.

What it does do is copy your screen to the Windows Clipboard.

From there you can paste the image into any graphics program.

I use the free graphics program from France, called “Photo Filtre“.

You could just as easily Paste the image into Paint, Print Shop, Photo Shop, etc.

      Good Luck,
      The Doctor 😎

Just to clarify, print screen isn’t functioning so there is no image saved to the clipboard to paste into Paint or Irfanview.

    • in reply to: Print Screen doesn’t work #1384377

Did you check the PicturesScreenshots folder to see if the screens are being captured as png files?
What Toshiba model is it? Is it possible that you have to press some other key to enable the print screen key?

      It’s a Toshiba S855-S5378.
There is no ‘Screenshots’ folder in ‘My Pictures’ or ‘Public Pictures’.
The “Pictures” folder remains empty no matter what key combos are used and at no time is there anything in the clipboard to paste into Irfanfiew or Paint.

Is it possible that you have to press some other key to enable the print screen key?

I’ve tried other keys….Shift,Ctrl, FN,Alt Space, Enter, key with a square on it, along with Printscreen and no joy.

Everything else went so smoothly in setting this computer up, I’m surprised something that seems so minor doesn’t work.

    • I also had the need for a new laptop and facing the hassle of the rep of Win 8 a daunting task…..until I read this thread and dived in, setting it up the way I wanted.

      Thanks Medico and CLiNT……

    • in reply to: Office 2010 v. Office 2013 #1377934

My use is for home/home office.
Currently using Office 2000 on a Win 7 Home Premium system with no issues other than Outlook which I never have used.
Downloaded .docs and .xls ( not a common occurrence for me ) are being opened in a sandbox.
Email and attachments are opened in a sandbox.
So far, no malicious issues ( knock on wood ).

Since I’m already booting a virtual Win2k in order to run Delorme Topo 3 and Acrobat 8 Pro, it wouldn’t be much hassle to run Office 2000 the same way when I eventually upgrade my Host OS to a Windows version that won’t run Office 2000.

While this may be inconvenient for many to set up, since I’m already using a virtual os to run software……it would be convenient for me.

Might even come a day when my Host os is a distro of Linux and I’m doing all my ‘work’ in a Win2k Guest os with old MS apps I already have licenses for.

      ( M$—–> ouch! )

    • in reply to: Need a hard drive monitor #1376025

      Hi Roderunner.
Just tried out the Acronis app. It’s appropriate, imo, as a first alert because it runs full time in the background…..but HDDScan gives a better account of the read/write condition as the drive ages, although a time consuming test has to be scheduled. I’ve been running HDDScan about once every 4 months and log the results.
      I’ll be keeping both.

      Good thread…….

    • in reply to: Need a hard drive monitor #1375955

I’m already using HDDscan, but the Acronis monitor looks interesting so I’ll be giving it a tryout on a 6 1/2 year old Acer with a POH of ~30,000.
      Thanks for the suggestion, Roderunner.

    • in reply to: Newbies vs Windows 8 #1353811

      Interesting article.

Two days ago I decided to give the Win8 Consumer Preview, build 8250, a spin to see if the $15 upgrade for my new computer was worth the change.

Too much frustration with the default setup.

I may be a Luddite, but at least I’m not $15 poorer for the experience.

Since I don’t need the upgrade, I intend to wait and see what’s available in the future.

    • in reply to: The era of the PC is over #1349512

      My two cents

Also something to think about…….almost 50% of desktop users are still using rather old OS’s and outdated hardware…….the XP machines. At some point in the future, they will be replaced. With what is the issue.
No doubt new sales versus use is going to be skewed when factoring in this situation…….new sales of desktops does not directly reflect use statistics, while mobile market sales are advancing rapidly from both new hardware/software advancements and the the filling of voids in usage.

I’ve been noticing these voids filled beyond personal use, as I suspect most of you do, also.
My Terminex and heating and cooling service agents are using tablets now in servicing, estimates and billing. And with the last furnace service, he emailed the copy of the bill being charged, as I wrote the check.
My insurance adjuster used a tablet to figure out hail damage last year.

I think mobile computing has a bright and growing future in the business realm because it fill a void, not because it replaces a desktop.

However, I don’t own one because I have no need at this time.

    • in reply to: Adobe Flash #1347519

      Solved:

The newest Adobe Flash update, 11.4.402.265, would run audio in Firefox when not run in a sandbox.
Then updating Sandboxie 3.72 to the newest release, 3.74…….. “flashplayerplugin 11.4.402.265.exe” was properly recognized and all is well for now.

Being only slightly behind in updates can obviously cause problems.

Thanks, ldb, for making me aware of the tie in with the sound mixer.

    • in reply to: Adobe Flash #1347513

Flash player now has an entry in the “Volume mixer”. Click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose mixer. Find the flash component and make sure is is not set on mute. Also try turning up the slider volume. If that does not work, get the flash uninstaller from the Adobe website and run that and then reinstall the latest version and recheck the mixer settings.

Thanks, will give it a try

    • in reply to: How to erase some files on DVD-RW disc in Windows 7 #1344276

I also have had issues with DVD-RWs in the past.
Nero has a scandisc tool and I started finding bad sectors on re-writable discs that still ‘worked’.
Now, I no longer use them.
This is also a good tool to use to verify the quality of older CD/DVD-R backups and software instal discs.

      Hard drives have issues also.
If possible, imo, any important data base involves multiple backup plans………rather difficult, though, with massive video files.

      Good luck 🙂

    • in reply to: Security for Windows 7 #1344272

I run my main Win7 computer with layered security from the Windows Firewall with Advanced settings to MSE, Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Firefox with Adblock+, Betterprivacy, Ghostery, and NoScript.
UAC is set to max and I operate from a user account.

While not a scanner, I also run my browser in Sandboxie and white list what is allowed to run in it and what is allowed internet access through it.

This has worked well for me, but as mentioned, security begins with wise caution by the user.

Banking, anything of importance to me requiring a secure link, business affairs, is done on a dedicated computer set up as above, but never used for ‘surfing’. It’s an inexpensive 2 year old $300 Compaq running Win 7.
I’ve thought about Linux ( Live and installed ) but I don’t know enough about Linux security to trust banking, etc, with a Linux system I’d instal/maintain…..so it’s Windows for me as it’s what I started with years ago and what I’m now familiar with ( relative to Linux ) and the info I glean from forums like this one, that help me keep up with security.

edit: and don’t forget to do the updates on Windows and the other software you run.

    • Thanks Ted. 🙂

One point that always interests me concerns voice recognition.
I’ve gone from the early days of L&H to the present with Dragon Naturally Speaking, but the MS VR app has been a disappointment in Win 7.

Is it included-going to be included- in Win 8 and has anyone tried it?

    • Interesting thread.
I don’t have any input other than when I need new hardware, the comments here give me things to consider and address when I do buy/build a new computer. Thanks.

If Win 8 can be configured to boot to a desktop, why is there concern that the computer manufacturers won’t configure desktop and laptops that way for the public and businesses?
