      @jwitalka.

Thanks for the reply. I read it and I pretty well discovered that myself. My main problem is that even though I add a contact (or group), it seems that the program is using a different address book, as some contacts are not in the list. Is it possible there are two address books in use? If so, how do I go about finding them?

I am beginning to think it may be better to migrate her to Windows Live Mail, but need to be assured that I get ALL her contacts exported. And then, of course, there is the problem of all her existing mail folders.. I wonder if there is an migration tool to go from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail?

@BigMac56… I just looked at this and don’t see anything related to contacts, address books, or distribution lists.

but thanks for the reply anyway.

Hi JackSprat, these 33268-Mail-Tips also apply in Windows Mail on Vista.

Thanks.. But I believe this PDF applies to Windows Live Mail… Not Windows Mail. Not sure how mich difference there is between the two. Also, this doc seems to apply to adding accounts to WLM… I am more interested in ‘fixing’ her account, than setting up a new one.

You fail to mention what e-mail system she’s using, outlook, live, Hotmail?

The very first line in my post says she is using Windows Mail on a Vista system.

I have never used this email program, and believe it was replaced by Windows Live Mail in Windows 7.

Woody, your article mentions several times I believe, that the new M$ Surface tablets have a keyboard, as if this is a huge advancement over the iPad. There are quite a few 3rd party Bluetooth keyboards available for the iPad – should one really want/need one. As for Metro, it is ugly and very user unfriendly.. I will definitely NOT be upgrading. And everyone I have talked to about it, feels the same. It is a shame that M$ did not consult its users instead of trying to force fit an OS designed for tablets into a PC. Contrary to some opinions, the PC is not dead and will live on for many years to come.

      Couple of things..

While it is generally quite easy to change the font size in IE, I found that the font size in general in Windows too small. The following information is for Windows 7:

Right click on the desktop, and choose Personalize
Then, in the left side bar at the bottom, choose Display
You can then boost your sceen font size to 125% or even 150%
If that is too much, try Set Custom Text Size in the left side bar… I set mine to 110%.
It was just a bit larger, but all I really needed to help me read the fine print.

One thing I would really like is the ability to instantly and temporarily change the size of everything on the screen. If you have ever been to a demo of a product (like Adobe) running on a Mac, you will frequently see them zoom in to a praticular spot for the audience to see clearly. This is accomplished by holding down the Control key while moving the scroll button on the mouse. They can zoom in and out very quickly. I wish we had this ability with Windows!

    • in reply to: Where can I find a manual for Facebook? #1305521

Lots of chatter here about books and other sources of help for FB. However, the original question was about FB having its own help or tutorial. When I have a problem with MS Word, say in doing a mailmerge, I don’t want to go to a store or library to get a book – I want to get help from the product’s internal or online Help.

The online Help for FB sucks. FB is fixed or patched so frequently that it is now a mess of patches and fixes. It was not created as a logical application, with a project plan – it was thrown together rapidly by one guy, and has been constantly patched and fixed in response to complaints.

Having worked in software development, I can tell you that the Help is the last thing to get updated or changed – in virutally all projects. I think this is probably the same with FB. Patches and fixes are coming so fast, they can’t keep up with updating the Help to keep in sync.

I loath FB – the only reason I have an account, is because my daughter insisted I get an account so I can view photos of her and my grandson, since that is her preferred method of sharing photos. (she is in Florida, I am in Canada). My account is as minimal as can be, with absolutely no personal information available.. including my name (I use a pseudonym). But, I must say, it is still hard for me to weed out all crap on her account, just so I can see her photos.

    • in reply to: Take your PC’s temperature — for free! #1302383

I have been using Hard Disk Sentinel (http://www.hdsentinel.com/) for some time, and find it has, among many other tools, a very good heat monitoring system. It saved me from catastrophic HD failure by warning me in advance to backup and replace my HD. The program loads at startup and runs in the background. A small indicator in the task bar in the lower right of the screen keeps me continually advised of the temp of the HDs. Alarms can also be set if the temp exceeds a predetermined value.

As previously mentioned, NEVER block the air intake or exhaust ports of any computer, especially laptops!

Thanks for the non-answer. I will take your advice and look elsewhere and not bother anyone anymore on this board.

I am surprised that no one in this community can answer this. Simple question, I think, that requires either a yes or no. And if yes, how? Thanks

If you just want to write plain text, try WriteMonkey – a very simple and fast text editor. No menus, ribbons, or anything else.. just a plain screen to work in. You can choose your own paper colour and text colour (I use green and black – reminds me of the old dumb terminal days). Right click on the mouse for a list of functions and options. When you are done, you can easily copy/paste your work into any word processor if you wish, or just leave it as a text file.

Well that is indeed strange. I have 2007, and can’t delete it either.

Workaround: Select the zero character, and change it’s colour to white. It won’t be removed, but it won’t be seen either.

    • in reply to: Avoid the security risk of shortened URLs #1256713

Why not just right-click the short url and look at properties. That shows the real link

I agree.. that is by far the easiest way to check ANY link!

Hi Paul, and welcome to the Lounge! Welcome to all first time posters!

Yes Paul, you can disable the ‘feature’ which is called Aero Snap (and Aero Shake is tied in with it also). In the Start menu search box type mouse, and then click Change How your Mouse Works. Near the bottom of the window that comes up, select Prevent Windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen. This disables Snap and Shake as well as the keyboard shortcuts that perform the same functions. You can always reverse this if you change your mind in the future.

Thanks for the welcome, and MANY thanks for the Aero Shake disable tip!!!!

      Paul

One thing that really annoys me is when grabbling the title bar of a window to reposition it, if often makes the window full screen size. This is new with Win7, and I absolutely hate it – it is a total waste of time, as I have to resize the window back to its original size again. All I want to do is MOVE the window, not FULL SCREEN resize it.

Is there as way to turn off or disable this ‘feature’?

      Paul
