Thanks for the replies but I already tried those things.

Some of the folders do have some jpg files in them, but I don’t think there was anything helpful about the dates of the files either. I transferred them all to that new computer from her old one (using a USB transfer cable) so I personally saw them in the folders. Too bad she doesn’t still have the old computer, since (of course) she doesn’t have any backups. I feel responsible because after all I’m the one that supposedly knows more than she does and should, therefore, be helping to keep her functioning.

I’m not at her house again now until next weekend so I’ll be accumulating suggestions to try then.

      Thanks for the help,

      Callie

Yeah, I found that one and it didn’t work for me. There were a couple of others that all led to this one, unfortunately. I was really hoping that it was something a lot of people had but I guess not.

I’m hoping that someone will have had this problem with the network logon vs the Windows Welcome Screen login — not necessarily with the same BCM thing. Maybe need an NT person??

      Hello,
For Mozilla Firefox, if you want to save all your bookmarks, extensions, add-ons, customizations, etc.

      HandyAndy

I don’t have a profiles.ini file or a Profiles folder anywhere in my computer. Nor do I have a folder called Application Data anywhere. Of course, it’s using some kind of preferences because all my bookmarks are here when I’m using the browser.

Thanks, but I don’t think my problem is something else I’ve done by moving the My Documents to another driver maybe….

    • in reply to: XP: Lost Desktop? Start Menu? someone else's? #1152133

A user’s desktop icons are shortcuts stored in C:Documents and Settings<usernameDesktop, except for some "system" shortcuts such as My Computer; information about those is set in the properties of the desktop and stored in the Registry.

I don't know enough about Firefox.

Thanks. It's not there, so obviously I've messed something up somewhere by moving the My Documents or whatever. Sigh.

I’d create a new user, then transfer the files from My Documents etc.

It worked to create a new user, but the most important thing I want to transfer is all my Firefox favorites, add-ons, extensions, passwords.

I read a couple of articles about finding the firefox preferences file but that didn’t turn up the ones I’m currently using where it said it was supposed to be. I can’t find the Bookmarks file it’s using now either.

I’ve already totally confused everything because I moved the My Documents to a different drive (using Windows’ move process). But even so, Windows just created another one in the old place.

The Start Menu for the messed up user has that user’s name on it, and all the programs. It just doesn’t have the Desktop and I don’t know where Windows keeps that either. The one I can find is the empty one that’s showing.

How would I go about finding and then moving all the pertinent stuff to the new user and what is “pertinent” to recreate all the customization I made on the original???

      Thanks for any insights.

A thank you is in order from me too because I did a search for my problem and found this thread. AND the reported success with Unlocker is encouraging. It wasn’t my file or computer, but I was helping someone else. I don’t think he got into that pickle in quite the same way, but who knows.

He’ll be thrilled there’s a way around the problem, although I personally would love to know how it happened. Oh well, it’s probably one of those things that are harder to find out why than it’s really worth. After all, why else did we invent the word WORKAROUND.

      Thanks again,

      Callie

      Thanks, that worked.

Well, duh that was the exact problem. WHY I couldn’t see it…..

      Thanks a lot.

      Here’s the second file.

    • in reply to: FF won’t update for Limited User (FF 2.0.0.14) #1108869

Okay, Safe Mode to get to the “real” Administrator. *IS* this the way to get FF updated for everyone at the same time? and do I have to do it EVERY time there’s an update? or is there a way to give FF some kind of permission for everyone (like the firewall does?)

      Thanks for the help.

      Callie

    • in reply to: FF won’t update for Limited User (FF 2.0.0.14) #1108635

It’s a separate user account called Admin that has administrative privileges. I’m not sure if I know how to find the actual Administrator account — do you think that’s the one that needs to make changes that will carry through to all users? BTW, this is XP Home (does it even have Administrator?)

    • in reply to: FF uninstall (FF 1.5 ish) #1041310

Darn, FF 2.0 is still doing it. I have an RSS feed and I wondered if that might be what’s triggering it — would explain why it happens no matter what page I’m on. And Yes, that’s an extension, which was already mentioned, thanks, as a possible cause of the trouble. Just have to get back and disable that to see….. Thanks for all the help. Callie

    • in reply to: FF uninstall (FF 1.5 ish) #1040566

Yup, silly me. I finally thought to look in the Mozilla folder. Not only was there an Uninstall.exe, it left all my preferences/settings so when I installed 2.0 everything was there. I haven’t had time to see if that cured the spawning problem though. If not, I’ll get some more investigatory power involved…. Thanks, Callie

    • in reply to: FF uninstall (FF 1.5 ish) #1040434

Thanks for all the suggestions. No, it’s not listed anywhere in Add/Remove Programs, and it doesn’t have its own Uninstall that I can find. The new tabs happen on different pages with no warnings AND FF even starts up by itself so it doesn’t seem like extensions. It’s only on my laptop. I thought about spyware etc but it’s been scanned by several different programs and comes up clean. I’m hoping that if I can get it off and then install 2.0….

    • in reply to: Word freezes on paste from web (2000 (9.0.6926 SP- #1004787

WOW — you’ve surely put your finger right on it!! I have indeed locked down IE almost totally. The only pages that can access the internet at all are in the Trusted Zone. So, duh, obviously nothing can come across from some random page I’m pasting from!! I should have remembered how tightly IE is incorporated into MS products…. Amazing how some random comment that (to me) would seem unrelated would turn out to be the absolute clue to the solution!!

Of course, all the suggestions to stop trying to paste it with the formatting would work just fine, but now I have The Answer WHY I can’t preserve the formatting I wanted. I wonder if all those error reports I sent will end up making sense to anyone at MS….

Thanks again for everyone’s help. Sure do appreciate even a little bit of light shed on this whole confusing “computer thing”.
