I have been steaming over the new newsletter. What moron decided the font size? If you can’t bring back a font size we can read comfortably, then I will cancel my subscription. To many hands in the kitchen doesn’t always produce a good product.

VirtualBox: Answers to frequent reader questions

      By Fred Langa

Although Oracle’s free, open-source, virtual-PC application is a great way to safely test drive a new operating system or to keep an old OS alive, some of its complexities can be baffling. Here are answers to some of the most common questions readers have sent in about setting up and using VirtualBox.

      Fred,
I rated you VPC article as poor. I’m sure if someone understood your article would rate it superb. I’ve never understood VPC/Sandboxie. Now, after reading your article, I know I’ll never mess with them again. I come from the pencil, paper, and slide rule era. Keep up the great articles that I understand.

I have not seen anything about WIN10’s desktop. Are they going to have a switchable desktop? I don’t want the look of the Surface or 8.1. I hate them. My primary computering is on desktop machines. My have to go down with the WIN7 ship. I also agree with IE. I quit using it after IE7.

Hey fellas, I right click and get the context menu. Click on Properties and nothing. Now I’ve lost my printer. Was going to try and backup My Documents to Dvd. Blue screen. Tried to run an audio CD. Blue Screen. Been getting random Blue Screens. My comment about my laptop wasn’t explained well. I had used it over a week ago and things were fine. Since my desktop was screwing up, I went to Google something. That’s when I found the laptop screwed up. We’ve had some nasty lightning storms here the last couple weeks. Only thing I can come up with that’s affecting both systems. I have two more systems, but both have been turned off and I haven’t checked them. So, tomorrow or today I will run my image files on the desktop. I can’t run the repair either. Anyway, thanks guys.

The only thing I get to come up is the Command Prompt or it brings up a file listing of C:usersme…… Something is really amiss. I checked my laptop which dual boots XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. Both need to be re-installed. Vista is working on that now. Looks like I use my image file. Thanks for the help guys.

I get “you must be an adminstrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility”. Now I don’t have a clue there. I am in administrator mode.

I’ve never really understood backups. Never understood what to backup. I’ve been reading Fred Langa Lists since Win 98. Still never made any sense to me. So my first attempt was with Windows one Care or something like that. I still have a 16gb file that I can’t recover. Tks Microsoft. I didn’t attempt a backup again for a few more years. To date I have tried four different programs. I could never recover any files from them. A little gun shy you might say. Also my first four images never worked either. I’m apparently doomed. I do however copy my documents, my music, and my pictures to an external hard drive. I’m not sure what else needs to be copied/backed up. I do an image every month. I hope they will work when I may need them. I’m just an old guy that doesn’t understand the terminology.

      Hello tfspry:
I am dual booting both OS’s. Win 7 sees the other partitions and I can access them through Win Explorer and My Computer. The problem I see is Win 7 has both of those files in it’s My Documents. Won’t this cause problems if I want to add files in Win 7?
