    • Right, the File Converter/Compatibility Pack to use for that is compatible only with Office 2000, Office XP/2002 and Office 2003.

Actually LibreOffice seems to open .docx files – I’ve just tried it.

    • in reply to: GIMP: A free alternative to Photoshop #1341641

Thanks for recommending GIMP. For people wanting to learn more about how to use it I’d recommend the book Beginning GIMP by Akkana Peck. (I see from Amazon that there is now a third edition of this so it may be more up to date than the first edition sitting on my shelves. Also there are great resources at http://blog.meetthegimp.org/ including loads of video tutorials on all kinds of aspects. It’s worth going for the table of contents link and selecting the shows you want to look at since there are 181 of them at the latest count. I remember recommending this site before in a forum, the Lounge I think, and someone saying that GIMP was obviously ridiculously hard to use if it needed all those tutorials. Haven’t they seen all the internet material about Photoshop, and the multiple titles in the bookshops about how to use it? A great program in my view.

    • in reply to: Hoax calls from “Microsoft” #1330341

Just to add to the stories.

      (1) My father-in-law, not the most computer-literate man on the planet (he claims to be the founder of the quill pen society) had one of these calls the other day and told the caller he didn’t have a computer (true, it’s his wife that has one) and that ended the call quickly.

      (2) One time when I had such a call, I was told that my computer was infected with the HIV/Aids virus! I’m still laughing about that one. One of my friends suggested that the answer was to fit my computer with a condom.

Like one of the previous posters, I think that we are getting fewer of these calls in the UK at the moment.

    • in reply to: Can’t install Malwarebytes #1296920

A simple way around the problem is to rename MBAM.EXE the main executable for malwarebytes to another name, i always rename it as mouse.exe this name is very rarely blocked by virus as it could be the true mouse program for your computer.

      rgds
      Syb

Another slight enhancement to this approach: It may be better to make a copy of the MBAM.EXE file and rename that so that you still have MBAM.EXE in the same folder too. Malwarebytes can get you to restart the computer to complete the cleanup process, and when it does, it will be looking for MBAM.EXE not MOUSE.EXE.

    • in reply to: What’s wrong with e-mail instead of Groups or Circles? #1294180

I like email, but I also use Facebook, mainly because a lot of people I know use it too. For instance, two families I know had new babies this week. I got the news about one of them because they sent round an email to their friends, but the others put a post on Facebook, and I might still have not heard about it without looking there.

    • in reply to: Endnotes Word 2007 – Need to type AFTER #1268989

      Good morning all,
I realise endnotes mean AT THE END!! but i want to enter more date (signature, comments, anything) after the endnotes – without it being referenced in the Endnote Text.

I know I can put in a section break at the end of the document, then set the Endnotes to occur at the end of the current section, thereby allowing me to type in the last section. However this only seems to work when I put in the section breaks BEFORE i commence inserting Endnotes into the preceding section of the document.

If I already have endnotes throughout an existing document, there seems to be no way I can override the END feature, meaning that if i follow the steps above, i STILL cannot type anything after the last endnote without it being referenced in the Endnote Text.

Yes, I have tried converting the end notes to footnotes, doing the section breaks then converting back to endnotes to appear at the end of the current section, but this still doesn’t work.

Any further possible techniques or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve just tried this in Word 2003 (sorry – that’s what I have available right now).

      (1) I started a new document wrote a little bit of text and included an endnote, which I specified as being at the end of the document.

      (2) I went to the end of the document (Ctrl-End).

      (3) I inserted a new section (continuous) and typed a few words.

      (4) I positioned the insertion point in the endnote went to the Insert menu, chose Reference – footnote, changed the setting from end of document to end of section, and clicked Apply.

It seems to work – see attachment.

    • in reply to: date time stamp on every line of a word document #1268983

      Word 2010
Is there a way to do this? Like line numbering, but putting the data/time stamp at the front of every paragraph.

It’s not entirely clear what you are trying to achieve here. Is what you want a document that people add to over time, and on each occasion that a new entry is made, it is automatically date-stamped?

    • in reply to: Bookmarking problem in Opera 10.63 #1263401

I too have tried bookmarking all three of the pages you link to, and Opera 11 let me do it. I then tried to bookmark one of them again in a different folder within my bookmarks, (by clicking on the red Opera Menu button, choosing Bookmarks, navigating to a subfolder, and then choosing Bookmark page) but then it told me that the I had already bookmarked the page, even though not in the same subfolder.

However, the dialog box it brings up does tell me where the Bookmark that already exists has been stored. (See screenshot). (In this case the “Bookmarks” folder.) Can you use that information to track down the bookmark that allegedly already exists?

    • in reply to: Bookmarking problem in Opera 10.63 #1263344

I am only an experienced newbie.
I am running Opera 10.63 on Win XP.
I love Opera but hate the new bookmark setup.
I never had a problem with Opera 10.52 (think that was the old version I was using ) .
I have not installed Opera 11 yet, but I am sure I will have the same problem since the situation below has been ongoing in the last 2 or 3 Opera version.
Don’t know what has changed since Opera 10.52.

      MY PROBLEM >>>>
Often I go to a website ie a plumbing website and find a bunch or different pages on that one site that I want to bookmark.
FIRST time I can bookmark the site with no problems.
I go to bookmark the SECOND page on that site and DON’T get the box to bookmark it.
I get a PROPERTIES box apparently telling me I already bookmarked the site.
It often takes a LONG time sorting thru links on a site to get the info one wants.
WHY can’t I bookmark ALL PAGES on a site INDIVIDUALLY as I did with Opera 10.52 ???

I did post in an Opera forum but could not make sense of the answer.
I think I was told it was ALREADY BOOKMARKED………well I know that, but I want these other pages ALSO bookmarked.
In some cases I had placed the links onto the PERSONAL bar and would go back to the site with the plan to bookmark it after more thorough examination.
I removed the site from the PERSONAL bar thinking I could then bookmark the site………….NO GOOD.
I did not CLOSE Opera after removing the link from the PERSONAL bar and then reopen and try to bookmark the site………don’t know if that is the problem.

While it would be nice to know WHAT has changed in Opera since version 10.52, I am more interested in knowing HOW to fix this problem >>>>>>>>

HOW can I fix this bookmarking problem assuming I have described it effectively………I can’t be the only one with the problem based on posts in the Opera forum.
Am I trying to do something in Opera that I can’t accomplish ???

      Thanks for all replies.

I’m now using Opera 11, but I’m sure you’re right that the behaviour is likely to be the same. You don’t give an example of a site where this happens, but I have just tried going to http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport and then I bookmarked the page. I then clicked on the link to Rugby Union at http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/rugby-union and I was also able to bookmark that page. But if I then tried to bookmark http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/rugby-union again it told me I had already bookmarked the page.

At a site where you encounter this issue, does the URL in the address bar change when you move to another page? If you were to click on http://www.igw.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/page15.html (sorry to self-advertise) and click on successive thumbnails, different pictures come up but the URL remains http://www.igw.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/page15.html because the page uses flash and by displaying different photos it isn’t actually moving to another page.

Other than that, I don’t know what to say? What method are you using to bookmark the page?

    • in reply to: Error message opening WS newsletter #1262016

I most commonly see that message if someone has used Word as their editor and accidentally embedded smart tags into the message. These sometimes are depicted using a dotted underline under a name or address. Basically, I never want ActiveX controls to run in email messages, so I just dismiss it.

I received that newsletter and don’t get the error message. I do not use Word as my mail editor, in case that makes a difference…

Edit #1: I think all the settings relating to Smart Tags are in Word.

Tools > AutoCorrect Options > Smart Tags tab

      (1) uncheck Label Text with Smart Tags
      (2) open Save Options and uncheck Embed Smart Tags

Tools > Options > General > Email Options

if not grayed out, uncheck Save smart tags in e-mail

Edit #2: If you previously had your Outlook security set to “Internet Zone” (NOT RECOMMENDED) rather than “Restricted Zone” (MUCH SAFER), then you might been allowing Smart Tags (and other ActiveX controls) to run. But that’s unlikely; most people do not lower their Outlook HTML security in that manner.

      Thanks, Jefferson.

I don’t use Word as my email editor. My Outlook security is set to Restricted zone as you suggest. I’ve never seen this message before with any email I’ve received. Perhaps the best thing is to wait for the next WS email and see whether it recurs.

    • in reply to: text search results highlighting #1260381

Does anybody know of an addon for Firefox that highlights the search query text on your search results page? Example: I type the name John Doe in Google. I get 100 pages available to search. I select one and it takes me to an article the mentions John Doe. It would be great to have the words John Doe highlighted in the article so I don’t have to read the whole thing to see where John Doe’s name is mentioned.

No, but in Opera if you were to go to a page with John Doe in it and use the find tool on that page it would highlight all the instances on the page (and not just the first one like the find feature in Firefox).

You might find Opera helpful in this respect.

    • in reply to: Ashampoo 6 + need for IE 7 ??? #1256825

I recently DLed Ashampoo 6.77 FREE.
Requirements state you need IE 7.

I think I have IE6 which is problematic for security on an XP machine.
      I DON’T use Internet Explorer.
      I use another browser.

      1)   WHY would a burning program REQUIRE IE 7 when other smaller no-name apps don’t require similar ???

      2)   Bets on Ashampoo working without IE 7 which I don’t feel like installing on my machine ??

I plan on using this mainly for burning music CDs and not movies from internet, etc.

      Thanks in advance.

Have you got any great reason not to install a later version of IE? I too use Windows XP and I have IE8 installed. It works just fine, though I hardly ever use it – I prefer another browser (Opera). But I can’t think of reasons not to install IE7 or 8, if Ashampoo wants it to be there. You  don’t have to make it your default browser.

    • in reply to: Current media players #1256746

The reason I stopped using Real Player is that its update function messed up my PCs.
I don’t like iTunes for a number of reasons : I have a very large music collection and Winamp has better cataloguing functionality; iTunes used to include QuickTime which updated itself and locked up my PCs; I don’t like the way that iTunes tends to take over file associations.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. And I use Windows Media Player with my ipod, using a plug-in called  MGTEK dopisp to make it work with WMP, mainly because I like WMP better than iTunes..

    • in reply to: Current media players #1256682

I will never allow Real or iTunes anywhere near my PCs; they are both viruses in my opinion !

I know that Real Player has in the past been criticised for behaving like spyware or adware, and I have avoided it for years for that reason. I’m not sure what you mean about iTunes, however. (Though I too prefer to use something else in conjunction with my ipod.)

But you are not the first in this thread to say that you avoid Real Player without actually explaining why. Can you say more, and are the faults that there used to be still relevant to the most recent versions?
