      Thanks for the response, but…
Now we’re back to square one. PaulK said in his post it’s not a good idea to store a calculated field in the table. If I really want to, should I use an Append Query to add the calculated field?

I really have two problems here:
      1. Find any duplicates in existing data. I’ve solved that with a query on the SecRowLot calculated field, which found about 40 duplicates.

      2. Once those are cleaned up, how do I test new data for duplicates? Store the calculated field in the table? (how?) Or, use the RecordsetClone method referred to by PaulK. I posted a question about that, with no reply.

      I’m confused. Here what is?

Paul, thanks for the info. I researched RecordsetClone and think I know how to proceed. Should I use the FindFirst method to test for existing value? Consider the following complications:
I tried to create a unique index on the 3 fields but was stymied by data format. Some entries are blank because the cemetery layout varies all over the lot (pun intended.) For example, section F has no rows, only lots, so a location might be “F blank 23”, while section H might be “H 7 31”. That’s why I created my calculated value SecRowLot. Can I use the Recordset clone to test for duplicate SecRowLot values that exist in other records?

The user is a middle-aged priest. This is his first PC. I am the “virtual IT dept” for the rectory (where I maintain the Win95, 98 network), which is his home. Believe me, there are no copies of Win2k around.
I will do some more checking and if I uncover anything interesting, I’ll let you know.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but nothing worked, so I had to reformat and restore. That didn’t take as long as I feared, and all important data was backed up to floppies, so it wasn’t to painful. I’ll remember the tip about ScrsaverActive in Win.Ini the next time someone forgets their PW.
Additional comments. WinMe is weird! While talking to Dell support I described the reboot process and told them that there was a white progress bar at the bottom of the screen (probably related to scandisk running because of power-off shutdown from screensaver). The techrep said “That’s not WinMe, that’s Win2K! The user had a session with Dell support before I got involved and they think he loaded Win2k. I said I doubted that since he is a novice, and he has no copy of Win2K. The whole thing was weird and I spent more time trying to recover than the eventual restore took.
Again, thaks to all for the suggestions.

Brian, thanks for the info. I have been trying to Ask Jeeves at the Dell Website about Restore options for Me and all I can find is stuff about 98 or 2k. Win 98 has a “Dirty Restore” of the OS without Registry restore, a clean restore with Registry and Program Files replaced but document folders untouched (which is what I’d like) and a full reformat & restore. Do you know if Win Me has these same options? I’ve been on hold for Dell tech support for 45 minutes and am about to hang up and go home.

The problem is with the Menu Bar, not the Tool Bar. Your solution only affects Tool Bars. However, I solved the problem by replacing Normal.dot, as explained in my post of yesterday.
Thanks for your input. I’m sure that I’ll have to replace a Tool Bar someday.

Tried that but it didn’t work, so I closed Word, renamed normal.dot, reopened Word, which created the default normal.dot. All menus are now correct.
