      Bingo!
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the KB reference. Any idea how Word “virtualizes” the tabs? Sounds like fancy footwork in the code.

    • in reply to: Slow typing (XP on WinXP) #608793

Stuart: Sorry for the delay in responding. This problem occurred at a client site and I just got back there yesterday. Using Task Manager I can see Word’s usage fluctuate between 50 and 95% for 10 – 15 seconds, then settle down to a normal (?) 20%. The problem starts when I start typing very rapidly. After a few lines Word appears to lock up, but it is really going through the gyrations I described above. Eventually it returns to normal and the display catches up with what I typed. If I type slowly, Word has no trouble keeping up.

A friend told me about something he saw on the Norton Antivirus support site that might help. All it said for NAV 2002 on XP was to uncheck the Enable Office Plug-in in Options/Miscellaneous. I did, but to no avail.

Thanks to all for the replies. The KB articles were interesting. I’ve decided it’s not worth the time to dig any further and will let the manual IPs stay. I suspect it is the new dll that is required. At least MS admits “it’s a known problem”.

Thanks Pat. It worked. I had previously tried that but left out the second *. Ah, typos, typos!

First I’ll answer your questions, then I’ll tell you the solution we found.
When the user logs on to the network all is fine. When he uses Windows explorer or Net Neighborhood to highlight (see) the XP machine he gets a box which says that a password is needed to make this connection.
This means that XP doesn’t know who the user is. And the solution is:
In the XP’s TCP/IP properties/Advanced(?) (I’m not on XP now) check the box that says Use Netbios over IP. This will allow XP to resolve Netbios names from Win 95 PCs. It worked!! The problem PC can now connect to the XP shares. Why some 95 PCs were OK and others no good remains a mystery, but now they all work.
One remaining 98 PC still had a problem, which we solved by deleting and reinstalling the network stack several times. It seems that the Client for Microsoft networks was not binding properly with TCP/IP. Since the PC was also running Netbeui it had no problems connecting to the non-xp PCs on the net.
So, the bottom line is we had two separate problems, but they all involved network protocols.
As for the firewall issue, I’ve seen that before on another network where the clients had Norton Internet Security installed and NIS prevented the XPs from connecting to other PCs.

Thanks to all who posted their comments. I found the link to practicallynetworked.com especially helpful.

Thanks for the post. I have turned off the XP firewall and simple file sharing, and turned on “Allow remote users to log on without password”, buried deep in the security settings referred to in the article. Created a user for each of the networked PCs, but alas, only some of them can’t connect to the XP. When they log in they are asked for a password, which means that XP can’t authenticate them as legit users. A colleague thinks that is something to do with Master Browser settings, but can’t find anything relevant in the KB. We will visit the site together tomorrow, so I’ll let you know what happened.

      Thanks Al,
Yes, XP is set up correctly in the workgroup. I had previously read that article that you referred to and I also learned a lot. It did not solve my problem with some PCs unable to see XP. Any thoughts about the plain text password issue?

    • in reply to: Word XP and Office 2K (2K, XP) #588737

Thanks for your post. Sorry for the delay in responding. Fortunately, Works has a selective uninstall, reached thru Control Panel/Add-Remove programs. I uninstalled Word XP and the Works Add-on for MS Word. Then I installed Office 2k without a hitch.

    • in reply to: Master Browser (XP pro) #588016

Thanks for the very useful post and link. I disabled Simple File sharing and gave all users an account on the XP machine and also allowed blank passwords (for now) because no one uses them now. Partial success. All but 3 PCs can see XP and its printer (hooray). The 3 “blind” PCs are all running Win98. The others are running Win95, except for the Win98 file server. The XP can see and be seen by all Win95s. The XP can not access the Win98s, except for the Win98 dedicated file and mail server, which it sees just fine. I even tried disconnecting two 95s to see if there was a network limit in play. No luck.

    • in reply to: Multi-field Index (Access 97-SR-2) #570102

Thanks for the reply. I see that I now have two choices:
Use Dlookup in the query or the recordset clone on the form. I may play around with both to see how they work. Any thoughts on which technique would be faster?

As far as multiple internments, some lots are designated as two-deep. This means that the first burial in the grave is at the bottom, and a later burial will be on top of the first. I imagine this will become more common as cemeteries fill up.

Since I have the calculated field SecRowLot in the query, wouldn’t it be easier to add a control, based on the calculated field, to the form? Then I could use your Dlookup technique on this one control. I would be testing whether SecRowLot already exists in the database.

    • in reply to: Can’t View Network #565770

Thanks for the replies. I will explore NIS options and see where the problem is. As it turns out, using IP addresses of 192.168.x.x behind the router may eliminate the need for NIS since these are “non-routable” adresses and the router act as a firewall.

    • in reply to: Can’t View Network #565377

Mark. thanks for the post. I found that thread using a Search, and while it’s very interesting it did not solve the problem. However, I did find the answer. I disabled Norton Internet Security (which had been installed by the user) and Presto, my network view appeared. I reconnected my mapped drives and all is well, even after enabling NIS again. However #2, when I rebooted I lost the network view again. So, I’ll keep NIS (2002) disabled until I can find some answers on the Symantec web site.
Anyone reading this thread know about any adverse reactions with NIS and XP?

    • in reply to: Palm Vx and USB adapter #554421

      Bookman21,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I tried what you said but I got torpedoed pretty quickly. There is no USB option on the Hot Sync context menu. Only SetupLocalSerial Port. This makes sense because the Palm Vx has a serial cradle with a third party USB adapter that’s supposed to convert to serial. The Hot Sync Manager is version 3.1.0 and doesn’t kmow from USB. Any other thoughts?

    • in reply to: Windows Explorer-Search #554416

Sorry, I can’t post a sreen shot, the XP PC is at a remote site. I will try to explain more clearly. Think of Win 98 with Classic Explorer view. Split screen, with drives and folders on left, folder contents on right.
Let’s select C:Program Files on left. On right I double click on Microsoft Office and the display shows three folders on the right: Clipart, Office, Templates. I can continue to double click on any folder to see its contents. In XP Home, after “drilling down” to the fourth or fifth folder the view suddenly changes. On the left side is the Search screen asking about what you want to search for: pictures, files, etc. Why did this change from “Explorer” view? I know there is a setting that controls this, but I can’t find it.
