Thank you very much. I’ll take a look at those links.

The default for all the GP keys in that section is “not configured.” You should to read the effects/implications of each of the settings in the box that pops up to determine which one works best for you. What effect that “not configured” is included in the information. 1 user thanked author for this post.

Thanks for the help. At first I couldn’t figure out where to read about the effect of “not configured” because it wasn’t where I was looking in the left pane after clicking the drop down arrow. Since you said it was there I looked all over and found it at the bottom of the right pane. I now believe I am back to the default. Thanks again for your help.

If you have Pause set, and you click on “Resume Updates,” it is my experience that whatever is pending (that you can’t see or hide with wushowhide) will immediately begin download/install. This on either Home or Pro Edition. If you have Pause set, and you let the Pause expire (run out, NOT clicking “Resume Updates”): + If you are on the PRO Edition, and have Group Policy set with Enable Automatic Updates set to “2” (notify download/install), the updates may remain in the Windows Update queue until you click the “Donnload” button. + If you are on the the HOME Edition, it is my experience that Group Policy does NOT work (is ignored). If you find that whatever you installed as Group Policy works on HOME Edition, please provide a link to and information about the software.

      I have the Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update
Configure Automatic Updates enabled and set to 2 as shown above. I don’t have any computer that is not set this way that I could use as an example but I’d like to go back the the default setting for this key, or whatever it is called.  However, I don’t know what that default setting is. I looked over the choices when I clicked on all the options where I chose 2 but don’t see a good option where updates to Windows Defender would take place automatically as they used to. So what is the default? Should I just “disable” that key or is there some other option I am not seeing?

I believe you are absolutely correct. I don’t think the Group Policy worked on my Home versions.

So I decided to try installing the March updates. The first machine seems to have taken them OK but I noticed what I see in the first screenshot I am attaching. Not sure what it means since you can see from the second screenshot that I already do have version 20H2 installed. Can anyone explain what the first screenshot means – the portion inside the Red box?

I know the Title of this thread really doesn’t tell you what it’s about, but you may find the answer to some of your patching questions in The Ides of March and the linked ConputerWorld article at the top of it.
Also, Susan’s March 26th Article from the Newsletter.
And another thread with the obscure Title “Let’s get Mickey to try it” about the March Out-of-Band (OOB) patches.

Thank you for the reply. I am not at all sure why I ended up here. I thought I was in the part of this forum for Ask Woody. I can’t move this thread so if you can, I’d appreciate it because I’d still like to know why I get the newsletters but not the ones from Susan Bradley discussing the update issues.

    • in reply to: Touchscreen misregisters point-and-clicks #2355278

I am so sorry if this isn’t where I should ask this question. I do not have a lot of luck trying to navigate this site or with any of my searches. I searched, jut now, for posts by Susan Bradley and came up empty. I just want to know if it is safe to install March’s Windows 10 updates. I see MS-DEFCON 3: and assume they should be installed after looking at the MS-DEFCON System but I have reservations. In the past, when it was safe, after not being safe for a while, I received a newsletter from Susan Bradley saying to install the updates. I did not get any such newsletter this time nor did I get any warning me not to install them when she was recommending that. Just this morning I got this newsletter, AskWoody PLUS – 18.12.0 – 2021-04-05 – Touchscreen misregisters point-and-clicks, so I am confused as to why I didn’t receive any about the installation of the March’s Windows updates. And no, they are not in my junk or trash folder. So what is happening and should I install the updates? I know it is unclear but has the BSOD problem been fixed? That is my major concern.

Thank you. I have set up all my PRO machines and will see how that works out on April 5th. The same is true for the 1 laptop that I set up using the Enabled Group Policy Editor. If that works, I’ll let you know but there will be no other link than the one I pointed to at Major Geeks to get that Group Policy Editor.

      AKB2000016.

Thank you for that. So now I am going to use Group Editor to setup the option #2 to ask me before downloading and installing any updates. My question is, after I set this up, must I do anything to the “Resume Updates” at the Windows Update site? Or once the 35 day pause I had set runs out, does the “ask me before downloading and installing any updates” automatically go into effect?

    • in reply to: Is there a way to cheat Pause Update? #2353475

      Read Sections 1 and 2 of AKB2000026

I have looked for this but did not find it.  Where is AKB2000026?

    • in reply to: Is there a way to cheat Pause Update? #2353385

That quote you are asking about I found when searching the NET to help me once I opened Group Policy Editor, it was not from AKB2000016.

No I didn’t see the top screenshot in #2177509. But thanks to you I now saw it and think I have it set the way it suggests, to 2.

Hopefully only 1 more question. Will this automatically override the way my pause is set now and Notify for download and Auto install? Or must I Resume Updates and let it take over from there?

Hopefully this will help others. The machine I am on now is a Windows 10 Home edition which does not come with a Group Policy Editor but if you follow this link and install the Group Policy Editor it will be enable on the Home edition. https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/group_policy_editor_in_windows_10_home_edition_enabler.html

OK I do need  some more help. Here is what I found as to how to get to where I am supposed to be in the Group Editor.

To enable Microsoft Updates use the Group Policy Management Console go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates and select Install updates for other Microsoft products.

I am attaching 2 screen shots because I cannot find where it says “Select updates for other Microsoft products”. Can you advise me what to select from my screenshots or am I totally off base. I don’t see any way to enable that Group Policy setting under Windows Update – Configure automatic updates = Enabled, value 2 (notify download/install).

    • in reply to: Is there a way to cheat Pause Update? #2353357

I am a bit confused. What I see in this quote is this is for businesses. Will this work for my Windows 10 Pro machines? Not sure what the Update for Business means.

Method 2 – Using Group Policy under Windows Update\Windows Update for Business.
Group Policy setting under Windows Update – Configure automatic updates = Enabled, value 2 (notify download/install).
What this does is hold the updates in the queue until you click the “Download” button. Since the Quality updates are not deferred, they will show up in the queue immediately after release but will not download. If there are updates you do not want to install (MS drivers, microcode), you will SEE them. You can then use wushowhide to hide them. If they still appear in the queue after hiding, clear them from the update queue using the method in AKB2000013.

    • in reply to: Is there a way to cheat Pause Update? #2353341

The Pro doesn’t need these tricks as updates can be paused indefinitely with GPEdit Windows Update = 2, Notify but don’t install.

Could you please explain this a little more? I do know how to open the group editor but then what steps do I take to make this change?

At the top of each topic on the website, just below the Title, there is a link “Comment on the AskWoody Lounge.” You click on that link, and it takes you to the Comments.

On the computer, in the Settings App\Network & Internet\Status click on “Properties.” There is a slider switch that turns Metered connections ON/OFF. It works on both Ethernet or WiFi.

Thank you very much for that information.
