Sounds like you need to get back into BIOS and reactivate the on-board audio , and re-install the chipset drivers , which will usually contain the audio drivers . If you haven’t got the driver discs for your motherboard … go to it’s maker’s web-site …

To avoid updating two browsers …. ‘remove’ IE … by unclicking it ….. here …. Control Panel / Programs and Features / Turns Windows features on or off …

One tool not many mention is the Backup and Restore tool found in the Control Panel of Windows 7 … It will create a system image for you … but it’s not a bit-for-bit copy … so needs the Rescue CD to allow booting , to restore it ….

    • in reply to: Trouble with Windows 7 Backup & Restore #1453836

      Hi ,
On the Backup and Restore window , there is a setting , about in the middle …. “Manage Space” … access it and make whatever changes you need … As there’s a setting to keep overwriting the one system image … I’m imagining that’s what’s happening …. If not …. your destination is too small ( which I doubt at 1 Tb !!!! ) ..Apparently , if not making just one … it will fill the destination before overwriting the oldest ….

      Cheers ,

      Evan .

    • in reply to: Run a program when Windows powers monitor on and off? #1429935

      Hi Mark ,
If I’m correctly understanding you … what you want should be easily obtained through adjusting the power scheme being run …
To do so …. Left Click on Desktop , Right Click on Properties , LC to open the Screensaver tab … Left Click ‘Power’ button ( lower right ) . Pick one of the preset power schemes … or design your own . If say you set the ‘Turn off Monitor’ entry to 5 minutes …. after no use of keyboard or mouse for 5 minutes , your monitor would go black …. Wiggling the mouse will wake it up again …

      Cheers ,

    • in reply to: Windows update failed #1424093

      Hi ,
This may … or may not be relevant , but I once suffered a similar problem with Windows update on an XP SP3 system … which involved a lengthy troubleshoot ( numerous Fixits , .NET framework updates ) with Ms support … I finally discovered the fault by myself … with profuse apologies from Ms … It related to my having switched from Windows Update to Microsoft Update . Once I switched back … all operated as usual … If you don’t see “New Get Microsoft Update today” with a ‘Go’ arrow on the landing page … scroll down a bit and you should see a link to switch back to Windows Update …

    • in reply to: Windows Update fail: Unable to upgrade to IE 9 #1398594

      Hi ,

I’ve had vaguely similar problems with a Win XP system … which when resolved , centred around attempting to use Microsoft Update ( the new one that includes Office updates ) instead of Windows Update ( the ‘old’ one ) … to switch back there was a link half way down the landing page ..

One thing you could avail yourself of is the free phone support for any Windows/Microsoft Update problems .. I used it .. and although I stumbled on the solution without their help … they did spent quite some time with me … and ended with a apology for not having figured my problem before I did ..

      Good luck ,

      Evan .

      Hi ,

Do ensure that real-time protection is ticked ( IIRC .. it’s not on a fresh install … very oddly ) . To find it , open it’s GUI , select the ‘Settings’ tab , scroll to ‘Real-time protection’ ( 3rd line down on LHS ) , and , if needed , tick the box on the RHS ..

    • in reply to: Change Thunderbird folders #1264770

The solution I use is to manually edit the config file …
To do so … under Tools … go Options … Advanced … Config Editor ….
Then do a thorough scan for mail.server.server1.directory ( it may be different for you … ) and change it to what you want … Do similarly with mail.server.server2.directory .. etc. …

      Hope that helps ,

      Evan .

      Hi Neal ,

I’d look in the Config Editor … which is under Tools / Options / Advanced / General …. There seemed to be some relevant entries entitled ‘editor.XXXXX’ .. or try their forum …

    • in reply to: Persistent Adobe Flash Player 8 upgrade warning #1218500

      Hi ,

I’d strongly advise upgrading to Flash 10 … as versions 8/9 are not terribly secure these days … Just surf to the Adobe site from the link in the message that pops up .. and save ( to install later ) .. or run … You’ll need the Mozilla version …. If you don’t … you’ll continue to find websites that can’t display their Flash content in your browser .. Cheers ….
