    • I found that a program called GmailDefault Maker worked for me, also works with all other web based emails. Link for download: http://gmaildefault.codeplex.com/releases/view/55413

    • What do you think the wording “most folks” means, I take it that it means folks with Windows 7 or Windows 8. But not sure if I like the wording “subscription model”. I already know I will like the Technical Preview better than Windows 8, but I still prefer Windows 7.

    • :)SOLVED! After re-loading and updating 8 to 8.1 the problem still existed. Went through my notes, tried every suggestion one at a time, tested each time, same problem, would not shutdown or sleep!

For whatever reason, I decided to take a look at disk cleanup, I use CCleaner so I am not sure what prompted me to use disk cleanup. From there I ran the Windows Update Clean Up. This took about 3 hours to run, but since doing this sleep mode and shutdown is working! Don’t know why, but if this works for me, I hope it will help someone else. I tested it many times today before posting my solution.

    • no update for chipset drivers. I had one glitch after installation of Windows 8 that I did not mention. After the system and all drivers were loaded, I put Avast on. Updates to 8.1 kept failing, I suspected Avast and disabled it, guess what, updates worked, so I uninstalled Avast and put BitDefender on. I wonder if something got corrupted?

I will let you know if everything works as it should after I re-load, I have even considered buying a new disk with Windows 8.1, but will try this first. My disk was an ISO download from Microsoft when it first came out for $39 and free Media Center, so I am not out much if this doesn’t work. (I should probably wait until Windows 10 comes out before buying another disk)

Thanks for all your help! I have made notes on everything, you guys are the best!

    • I am checking into the idle time power suspend, not sure if this is the problem, I plugged in something in USB yesterday and there was no issue. Printer is on a USB though.

    • No missing drivers in Device Manager. The only drivers I had to load myself was for sound (Creative X-Fi) and web cam (Logitech HD), which I always have to do.

Funny thing is my laptop, Dell Inspiron i5, did the upgrade to 8.1 and it works fine. Also on a much older machine, I have the Technical Preview of Windows 10 and it works fine! My desktop is really what I like to use, and I can’t even shut it down with 8.1 unless I hold the power button, which I do not like to do.

Originally I had the hard drive partitioned with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on this same desktop and it all worked! I had a spare (but new) hard drive sitting on the shelf and decided to put it in because it was larger capacity and just install Windows 8, then ran into this problem of sleep and shutdown not working. Just doesn’t make sense!

    • Sorry to say this, but the problem is already back! Monitor and hard drive shut off, but fans running and mouse will not wake up the computer. This is very aggravating. Tired of doesn’t work, works, doesn’t work. This is the first computer problem I have not been able to solve.

Is this a only a problem with Windows 8 after the upgrade to 8.1? So far that is what I am seeing.

    • Thank you for responding, I did the powercfg/energy, the error was the following:
Error: USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Selective Suspend
I walked away from the computer for awhile, when I came back, Sleep mode was working! Don’t know why, but it just started working, now I don’t know what fixed it either, but glad it is finally working. Shut down works properly too!

access denied on manual reset – I think I will start all over with a reload

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Updates #1408709

I used the automatic (two times and did a reboot) will try the manual reset next.

when I open Windows Update the picture below is what I see. It does not show all the times I have tried to update this week, and does not show the updates I did manually. I get paranoid of something hiding, so I may do a complete nuke of the hard drive and reload. As you can see in the photo, it is in yellow, never saw this before.34773-Windows-Update

thanks, but it is still checking for updates, no results. It doesn’t even show the date under last time checked. All of our other computers in the house updated with no problem, except my desktop. The other computers were not “sleeping” only mine. I forgot to shut it down, which is what we do when we leave for a week or so.

I have seen this problem so many times, people bring me their computers to clean up the mess caused by rogue anti-virus, and I have always been successful with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware. I run Malwarebytes’ in safemode because I find it has a better chance of finding and removing all of it. It was always my understanding (correct me if I am wrong) that anti-virus does not always stop an infection, but discovers infections after they hit the hard drive and then tries to quarantine them. But another thing I notice is that these infections have been disabling the anti-virus, therefore the anti-virus can’t operate and do its job. Process Explorer also helps if you can find the process and stop it. I am paranoid, if it were my own computer getting infected, I would nuke the disk and reload windows.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Pro connection problems #1246402

Yes! That is exactly what she did, she had to manually set it up. We had tried the manual method before and it did not work, she later tried it after Charter changed the SSID and Key and then it worked. I am still puzzled as to why it did not work the first time, and also why should you have to set it up manually? I thought Windows 7 made it easier for people to connect wireless, you should be able to pick your connection and enter the key. Why did renaming the SSID and and a new key and setting up manual make a difference? And will it work again if she changes locations?

Thanks for the post, I really appreciate all the help on this forum. I am happy to hear from someone who had problems connecting with Windows 7, but found a solution.

PROBLEM SOLVED! For some reason a call to Charter fixed the connection problem, all I know is that they gave the network a new name and a new key, not sure if Charter did anything else at their end, but the laptop is online with a secure connection finally. The only thing I don’t know yet is if it will connect when she changes locations, the problem was not just at her apartment, it was also a problem at her mom’s house.

Thanks to all of you who posted back and helped!

Thanks for the link to TeamViewer –

She called late last night, I checked the driver for the Broadcom device and it is the latest from hp. We uninstalled it and reloaded it with the driver from hp, but she still cannot get online.

I had her re-run the troubleshooter, when we ran it before it did not find any problems. Now the troubleshooter comes back saying it could be a router or access point problem.

The computer would not communicate with the router. She is calling Charter today.
