    • in reply to: no network connectivity after Win 10 updates #1542760

One possible cause is the use of a login PIN in Win 10 instead of a password. If you use passwords for private file and folder sharing then I’ve read elsewhere that the PIN login ithereafter nterferes with networked pc’s seeing each other.

    • in reply to: Desktop Win 8.1 Pro 64 passes Memory Diagnostics, but… #1529449

Chkdsk /f corrected a few things on my desktop pc but search error remains. Before using my laptop to send this reply, I did a search with it and got the same error requiring use of memory diagnostic. It uses Win 10 Pro. So, this cannot be hardware-based or even Win OS-based, unless there is a Win Update common to both. It may be an infected and synced data file across both PC’s, or a program running on both. This is getting more serious.

Adding to my own post, I went to Event Viewer and found these errors, attached. The Device error relates to there being no printers lists under Devices and Printers – there were many 2 hours ago.

    • Maudibe – I appreciate this solution and will keep it for other situations. For now, I found that a group of 30 volunteers having mixed computer skills can access a Google Doc version of my workbook via an emailed link. It is not a perfect solution, but so far it looks like it will be good enough for data entry on their personal worksheet tabs, coupled with automatic recalc of team totals and auto save. They do not have to use gmail, or have google accounts for access. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: Surface Pro 3 resolution/scaling #1527800

Yes I did- during and after installing a new XFX R7 250X. No improvement.

    • in reply to: Surface Pro 3 resolution/scaling #1527462

I tried the Win 10 upgrade to my desktop with 23″ flat screen and found most desktop applications to be not only too small but also blurry. No amount of experimenting with resolutions other than the defaults, or font size, or clear fonts, etc. would allow me to read any Office 365 document without eyestrain. Never did find a way to pick a different system font, either. Online complaints mirrored mine, with no fixes. So – gave it up and reverted to Win 8.1 Business Premium and got back to to using my PC for actual work rather than troubleshooting.

    • in reply to: Renewing Office 365 or Reinstalling Office 2013 #1505770

RESOLVED. Thanks for the responses. I decided not to reinstall office suite and went subscription route. Now have Office 365 for Business Premium integrating my former Outlook exchange account on both pc’s. Outlook exchange account is also working fine on Galaxy Note 4. The problem with my installations (MS and GoDaddy support could not resolve) ended up being conflicting passwords among my GoDaddy and MS accounts, made worse by integration of my domain email address into outlook exchange mail. Finally resolved myself through trial and error.

That may work. I’ll still have my 1 TB onedrive via my Outlook 365 domain email, which I’ll renew. When I purchased my Dell laptop, it came with Office 365. I already had a MS account. I liked 365 and decided to uninstall Office 2013 as it seemed redundant. Putting it back, renewing my Outlook Exchange client, and keeping my MS Account seems to be logical. Just have to get Outlook for Android working on my Note 4.

I’ll search for that link – don’t see it “above”.

Did not find anything called “Outlook for Android” in Play Store. I tried “Microsoft Outlook” and “Outlook.com” Neither will connect to the Exchange server and I’m seeing this issue reported by many Note 4 users. I then tried “OWA for Android (pre-release)” on recent Android versions. Same issue.

    • in reply to: SyncPST #1459441

I used SyncPST for many years from Office XP through Office 2010. It is sold via Digital River but the source is WISCO, a German software company. Their tech. supp is awesome. They also make No more Dupes for Outlook, also handy. These products work very well, and will synch separate PST files on two different PCs, dealing only with incremental changes in contacts, calendars and emails, etc. in each file via two-way updating. It is very fast. No more trying to copy huge files even if onlly a few changes were made on one machine. Recently, I got fed up with changes in ISP’s causing issues in my contact notifications, so I made a small investment in a permanent domain email address. The domain folks set up the synchronization between my PC’s using Office 2013 and I no longer use SyncPST.

    • I understand these program distinctions. What I want to achieve is the best strategy for consolidating my old contacts and emails from the Outlook 2010 PST file with the new emails coming into my new Verizon email, accessible from any device with internet access. I have no server and my 2010 data is not shareable across devices. I bought but have not yet installed Office 365 Home Premium (5 device license) thinking its Outlook could accomplish that using OneDrive. I cannot verify that will work. I read about people using Outlook.com instead, bringing in local Outlook 2010 data and other client programs like gmail verizon. Verizon says I can bring old and new contacts and emails into its webmail. Unlike Win 8.1 Mail, which is east to read, Outlook.com is crammed with tiny fonts on my Ultrabook. As a Win 8.1 “Modern” and “Desktop” user, there must be an elegant solution and I’m open to advice.

    • I found that out too late, Bruce, as MS never offered that idea.

    • in reply to: Disk image program compatible with Win 8 #1369456

I think the real question here is whether you have a motherboard that supports UEFI and has Secure Boot enabled. If so, your experience with Terabyte’s software is very useful to know; if not, it’s just one more good product that will do the job IF Secure Boot is not in the mix (and some UEFI motherboards reportedly do not allow Secure Boot to be disabled, making the problem unsolvable in those cases).

My m/b is not UEFI and Secure Boot is not available.

    • in reply to: Disk image program compatible with Win 8 #1369320

I’v had great success with Terabyte Unlimited’s Image for Windows. It runs on Win 8 Pro, will image an OS/App drive while allowing me to continue working in Windows, and install TBIView that lets me drag and drop folders and files from within a compressed image to any folder on any drive. Finally, it includes Image for DOS, which will create a bootable USB that can create and restore images shared with the Windows version, if Windows won’t boot. It has never failed to image or restore.
