Thanks for introducing me to ProcessExplorer – it’s already solved a couple of little niggling questions, like, “how can I get Task Scheduler out of the Tray?”
Now If I click twice on ProcessExplorer’s CPU column and cancel the screensaver when I leave the machine, when I hear the modem screech in the next room I should be able to go back there and see which processes are busy.

Yes, thanks: I switched from free ZoneAlarm to also-free Agnitum Outpost firewall some while ago, and authorised access by several programs, but only recently has this self-dialling occurred. I’ll check Outpost for a log file that may reveal the culprit.

Yes – I’m accustomed to McAfee checking for updates when I’m online, but not doing the dialling.

    • in reply to: auto-disconnect #706078

Yes – I found it – thank you very much. The script beside the Settings button had seemed to suggest that these were just the proxy server settings.

Now we’ll see whether auto-disconnect was what was preventing the completion of the file transfer.

Yes, I wondered if the disconnect were being managed by the ISP – I don’t recall this coming along during the reign of Compuserve or LineOne. I am now with Freeserve, and thought it unlikely that they would shut down file transfers to their own photobox.
Most likely at some time I have clicked sleepily on “restore defaults” somewhere – I would NEVER do that when awake!

Well, perhaps the generic driver was the cause of my problems.

      Thanks, Joe:
I went looking for drivers some while ago: made no headway with the Conexant website but found a database where dozens of people had uploaded Conexant SoftK56 PCI drivers that could have been right but were all different – I didn’t dare try to pick one. The driver in use, presumably selected by WIN98, is comm.drv of 23 apr 1999.
I haven’t got an Office service pack .
      Excel version is 97 SR 2 (l)

    • in reply to: spool32.exe trouble #650003

      Thank you Phil.
I tried both tacks. It seems there was some repair work need at the Registry, but unrelated to the printer problem.
With the Clean Boot, we eliminated the page fault attribution to spool32.exe, but the printer still wasn’t responding to the computer at all. Perhaps spool32 was taking the blame for a hardware problem. I’m about to test another cable.

    • in reply to: Date mask (office 97) #641638

A small point compared with Mike’s question, but can you get Datevalue to accept 31/12/9999, as distinct from 12/31/9999?

I’d like to paste in a lot of my own dates which are in alphasortable order yyyymmdd and have Excel do date arithmetic on them – any chance?

    • in reply to: Dual Boot with XP? #641635

‘scuse me for asking, but is the reason for wanting win98 something to do with a peripheral that is incompatible with XP?
I haven’t dared upgrade, for fear my old peripherals might prove incompatible.

    • in reply to: WIN98 SE & Drivers #641634

      Thank you, Big Al.

The Win98 SE upgrade disk has a directory marked Drivers with a subdirectory marked Printer and that has a subd. for Epson and another for HP. Well, it looks as though they just put theSecond Edition’s new/additional drivers for these two makes in those directories.

It turned out that the subdirectory I needed was WIN98 DRIVER11.CAB: I found FINSTALL.DLL in there all right, and evidently once I had pointed the installer to FINSTALL.DLL the library file led the installer to the other three files it needed.

I had never noticed that these cabinets behave like folders, under the influence of Windows Explorer revealing the names of the files they contain. The odd thing is that, just like the Windows installer, Find / Files and Folders cannot find the contents of .CABs , which is why I gave up and cried out for help. As you say, its a pretty stupid arrangement.

OK – sorry – nobody else besides me makes clumsy mistakes and doesn’t notice straight away.
But this feature in EXCEL97- Format / Cells / Protection / Locked looks as though it was meant just for me.
I was hoping someone would tell me that in Excel 2000 it does work the way it looks, instead of being used after protecting the whole sheet to UNlock protection!
Meanwhile, back to the macro factory.
Perhaps what I’d better do is Protect everything and then Unlock the area where I next have work to do.
