I didn’t want to implicate the vendor because I’m pretty sure the fault lies with my XP configuration and not with the vendor.
      But here goes:
Serif PhotoPlus X2, Vista-ready, factory made.
Most of my other applications were set up by Installshield, but Serif PagePlus 11 and Serif PhotoPlus 11 were set up by Windows Installer, quite satisfactorily: that was before Internet Explorer 7 came along.

      Once again, Thank you, Hans.
The webserver I use can’t, or won’t, digest upper-case anywhere in filenames.
So the DOS batch-file approach is still the best way to go – OK.
It would be nice, though, if REN would accept a /S and work through all sub-directories.

Thank you, Dave: I was hoping for a recommendation.

I didn’t mind – I was so glad to see the back of it.

That was nice and easy – thank you.

    • in reply to: Welcome unwelcome (XP pro SR-2) #989214

My mystery you have solved: I had indeed installed .NET Framework without knowing the first thing about it, in order to run some new software that required it (BiblePro, in fact). Until that, I had lived in blissful ignorance of the welcome screen and never bothered about user accounts. Typical of Microsoft to impose something without consulting the user!
      Many thanks.

Thank you John – I’ll switch back from Thunderbird to OE for the duration and take advantage of this procedure.

    • in reply to: streamlining the GUI (5.1 SP2) #955939

Once again, I thank you, Phil.
I actually depend upon seeing the full path of my current doc most of the time, up there at the top window-frame – that’s not a problem to me, and doesn’t cannibalise window area like the address field does. My problem with long paths results from restricted space in dialogs.
I’ll give you an example of the trouble long paths give me, that I don’t think shortcuts or icons could overcome. Shrink.com, the JPG-shrinker, has a 36-character field for Open file identity, starting with the drive letter. I need to make sure the file I’m about to shrink is the one in the correct subdirectory. I can check the filename using the End key, but the immediate parent folder is the critical one. Since my filename is composed of subject and hints to enhancement steps used, it can use up all the 36 characters, so I don’t see the folder name in the Open field. Solution – the Home key? Not so: all it shows me is c:Documents and SettingsUserMy D.

I’m going to see if I can use Joe’s ruse, and then I’ll certainly look into DirNow! as well

Joe – that sounds really hopeful, thank you.
1] Yes, for sure I uninstalled Paint Shop Pro – just innocently assumed that would get rid of its Photo Album as well. I now have.
2] Must have missed the option – will let you know how I get on.
3] OK, we’re stuck with the User Level but can side-step it per 2] above. Good.

      Thank you, Hans:
I used to have an old Tweak UI off a magazine, used it in ca. 1998, and since then forgot all about it! Right enough, some folder settings have been retained OK — I must have just gone beyond the 400 limit.

    • in reply to: msgsrv32.exe #940132

      Thanks, Tony:
It looks as though there are just too many possible ways for msgsrv32 to appear to hang through no fault of its own that there is no way I can track the cause or causes of this frustrating experience – even though many of the listed causes could not apply in my hardware, there are so many others left!

Many thanks – that’s just what I needed.

Hi – so it zooms IE, but FF doesn’t respond. Is that what you expected?

    • in reply to: DUN dominance #880483

      Thanks, Alan:
There was only a problem when dialling and while waiting for a connection – all all other times, including the verification and logging-on phases, OE and the entire system responded to the console properly. I suspect these two antisocial characteristics of DUN were related to corruption in the registry. I have loaded a six-month-old registry back-up and rebooted, and now I don’t lose response. I hope things will be back to normal when I lose connection in future, too.
