I know many people on this forum are experienced with Linux, but if you want better support, Ubuntu forums (http://www.ubuntuforums.org) is where you want to post your question. I believe you need to type into the terminal: sudo apt-get update. That should update the repositories and allow you to download the necessary package. Good luck:)

Gadget: Nice mini tutorial there! Seems like you have done that before 🙂

You should try Xubuntu, which is a lighter version of the popular Linux OS, Ubuntu. It comes with a lot of light software, and a very light desktop, so it should run pretty well on your computer. you want a better desktop enviroment? no problem! just open up a terminal, and type sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, and you will have a desktop that looks like the Ubuntu one, and the lighter Xubuntu desktop!

I know this will sound wierd, since all windows users (me included) think that we need to install a whole bunch of security application to fix the OS’ shortcomings. Enter Ubuntu. I can answer you in one sentence: you don’t need anything. I know it sound impossible, but believe me, it’s true. Ubuntu comes with built in safeguards, plus there is almost NO malicious software out there for Linux (believe me, know what i’m talking about, search Ubuntu forums if you think i’m wrong).

So basically, you need not configure Ubuntu at all:).

      Welcome the hassle-free Linux world!

I’m writing this on Ubuntu (Xubuntu, actually) right now, without any firewall, security software, etc. and it works like a charm!

The only reason you might want a firewall is if you are running a high-risk computer (like a server) to make doubly sure you don’t get compromised.

If you guys want to talk about linux, you should go over to Ubuntu forums and post there. It has a much larger linux community, and usually your posts will be responded to within minutes (honestly). I honestly don’t think you are going to get a user-friendly version of Linux onto 512 mb. Maybe puppy linux, but that still gets rather techy…

I would recommend Lubuntu, or Xubuntu, Ubuntu is great, but a little too bloated for your computers.

I have no Idea why you guys hate Ubuntu, or even linux in general. I installed Ubuntu about a month ago (i’m dual booting it), and since then, the only reason I would want to boot into windows is to run a couple of programs that aren’t compatible with Ubuntu, or the compatibility software that you can install (wine). I probably use Ubuntu 80-90% of the time, and windows 20-10% of the time(out of necessity). It isn’t very geeky for general use, and I love the fact that it’s so customizable. Even if something doesn’t work, I can almost always find a solution on Ubuntu forums(http://www.ubuntuforums.org), either by finding a thread, or creating my own. It’s more secure, faster, easier to use, etc.

you should try it out, it’s great!
