In those days of manual card punches, I worked with three blind programmers (two completely blind, one with only peripheral vision). They had another small mechanical device for reading the punchcards. Output was in Braille.

Two of the programmers survived and thrived. The other didn’t.

I’ve only worked with one limited sight programmer since the advent of PCs and the demise of punch cards. In the early days of Windows 3.1 there were still utilities available which enabled magnification of portions of the screen.

A little further down south, it’s not quite so cold.

      Forecast 38C (89F) in Canberra, 43C (109F) in Melbourne.

I vote for twenty ten. On two grounds.

      1. Consistency with the thousand years before 2000.

      2. Unwieldy dates as time goes on. If we had to say “one thousand nine hundred (and) ninety nine” instead of “nineteen ninety nine” every time we used a date in the last century, we would still be there.

Some rebates in Australia allow you to take the receipt to a local post office, to collect the rebate on the spot.

      Nice when that happens.

’s funny – I kicked the habit about 10 years ago and now very rarely have the urge to light up. The odd thing is, however, a recurring dream I have in which I am offered a cigarette and always accept – I’m really enjoying it but then I wake up and I’m left with such a feeling of guilt. Funny how the mind works innit?
      Fortunately I haven’t given up beer…

Sorry to have come into this thread so late.

It took me at least 10 years before I stopped having those dreams.

It’s now about 21 years since I stopped.

And when I did, I just decided that I wasn’t going to have that first one in the morning. And I didn’t ever have one again.

Not that it was easy. It was extremely difficult.

      But the trigger was there.

It’s a YouTube movie, you need to have Adobe’s Flash player installed to view it.

Which, if you’re viewing from an iPhone, you can’t install- Flash is not viewable. YouTube works OK though- so it would be helpful to also include a link as well as embedding.

And here was me thinking that the thread was about Subway.

I know they sent children up chimneys – but surely not dogs!

I understand Santa is getting his flue shots, even as we speak.

Garbette in England? She has the opportunity to study overseas for a year. Just a heads up.

MissW (#1) has been in England for some weeks now (Liverpool). Surviving on parents’ contributions only.

Interesting that England doesn’t have a kidney bank, but it does have a liver pool.

I’ve successfully used a txt file to control a whole swag of things from within Word VBA.

Having said that, another approach I have used for a similar need is to use a “dir” function to iterate through files in a folder with a specified name structure.

    • And http://www.takeabreak.nl is redirected to the site of a Dutch travel agency.

… which, when you click on the flag for the English translation, gives you a page which says “English translation not available”.

At least MrsW’s mob has “www.takeabreak.com”, if not “www.takebreak.com”.

      1, 2, 3…

      We’re baaaaack!

There is still a “Testing” forum. It’s just moved- up near the top of the topics list now.

    • I have had belconnen-subs.com.au – I received a letter (from Australia, not China) at my other store in Belconnen offering me the domain belconnen-subs.com . I did a double take before I realised that it was not the au site. (My organisation does not like fanchisees to use their brand name in the url).

My wife works for a travel accommodation web site- http://www.takeabreak.com.au . One day I made a mistake and left out the first letter “a”. I was redirected to a rival’s website. When I pointed this out to then, TakeABreak were able to claim that url from the rival site.

How would we detect whether a fish sweats?

You just have to find the right plaice.

    • in reply to: Why you should avoid Social Networking #1181639

I believe your alternative name is “Easily Suede”…?

      Thanks for the inspiration.

My sign for the day was

“My shoes are firm. They’re not easily suede”.
