Saint Download is absolutely correct. There isn’t a better backup program out there than Acronis True Image 2010 (that I’m aware of.) It has all the features you could want and is very reliable. Check it out at http://www.acronis.com/ and they may have a Christmas special pricing promo come up within the next week or so. You might actually get a deal on it just by keeping tabs on the site over the next week or so.

If you are “installing stuff like crazy” that may be causing the icon cache to be rebuilt. See if it continues after you’ve finished with your installations.

      Hi Bob:

I am experiencing the exact same thing. One thing you might try, (just in case your Icon Cache is corrupt) is the following.

Kill Explorer.exe Process. Click the start button>holding down Ctrl + Shift & then right click on an open area in the start menu. Click “Exit Explorer.”

Click Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys and this will open the task manager.

Click “File”>”New Task”>cmd.exe then “enter or OK” This will open the cmd prompt

Type cd /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal and once more hit “Enter or click OK”

Type attrib -h IconCache.db Hit “Enter or click OK”

Type del IconCache.db Hit “Enter or click OK”

Type start explorer Hit “Enter or click OK”

Your windows icon cache will now have been rebuilt.

      Hope it works for you

Simply Right-Click on your desktop, go to “View” and click on the size of icons you wish to use.

      Good Luck

      Hi Joe:

Thanks for the second idea. I tried both of the tricks fro Win 7 News and neither of them worked for me. So, as I mentioned earlier, I looked at older restore points. Found one that left most of my newer stuff intact and thankfully, it worked out.
Thank all of you for your thoughtful suggestions and research.

      Let’s consider this thread closed.

      Hi Joe:

Yup, I’ve tried that and negative results.

      Hey Joe:

Yes, tried physical connections and they’re AOK. Suspect some sort of Software switch has to be the problem here as it effectively killed the drives right at the “Device Manager.” level. Thanks again

      Hi Kevin:

Tried the “System Restore” but I guess the restore time was too close to the event as it didn’t do any good. Will look again to see if I have a point a little older and give that a try. If not, then I guess I’ll do a complete restore from Acronis. Thanks for the suggestion though.

      Hi Joe:

Thanks for the effort. Tried the unhide drives but didn’t work. I believe because the drives are not showing up in “Device Manager” that only some type of hardware “enable” will work in this instance. I’m trying to get away with not restoring from Acronis even though my backup is only a few days old. Seems to me there has to be some sort of switch here to enable the system to recognize the drives that are being presented at “Post.” Thanks again.

      Hi Steve:

Tried what you advised but was not successful at finding the drives. As I mentioned above, the drives show up in BIOS but not in Hardware Devices. Thanks for the suggestion though.

      Hi Jeff:

No, I didn’t install any burning program lately. It worked right up ’til yesterday afternoon. I tried to remove four other removable drives from the library list and the next time I fired up the computer, my dvd drives were gone. They are recognized in BIOS but not in Hardware “Devices”
