I tried system restore but it only goes back to Feb 9 which is not far enough. I may have to do a re-install as you suggest but i’m reluctant to do this right now.
I think I’ll just live with the problem for a while and see if any other ideas are forthcoming. bummer
Thanks to all who gave input

Tried the change to Tahoma but still no change I’m afraid. This is really a strange one.
      Thanks for your efforts.

I tried tweakui but alas no change hairout

I delete the reg key as per Q133732.
I reboot and the WiMP and telephony program now appear normal.
Word & PPt have only one font listed (Marlett)
Excel has 5 fonts listed including Fixedsys, Marlett, System, MS Sans Serif. Most other progs appear normal (Adobe Acrobat Reader- intro screen is garbled)

After another re-boot I open up control panel and click on Fonts folder it opens as an empty window. After some time (I assume its rebuilding the reg key here) all the fonts appear again in the window. On opening WiMP and the telephony program the displays have been replaced by the boxes again and Word, etc now have all their normal fonts back.

Problem still unresolved. Thought I would add some more information in case anyone has any clues. I am also enclosing a screen shot of one prog that’s affected.

If I delete the fonts key in Windows Me reg and restart then the problem resolves and all the progs are normal again. The snag is that Word, etc have now got no fonts to work with other than the most basic sets so I can’t read any previous documents.

Once I reinstall the fonts then the same problem occurs. Basically I am following the advise given in the knowledge base:

I have WIndows Standard Scheme. For most of the Items in the drop down box the font box is grey and no font is listed. Where a font is listed it is MS Sans Serif (Western)

Many thanks for the suggetion which I tried but no luck I’m afraid.

Please see my reply to Bob_D and the attachment.

Do you know which fonts the OS uses for display in progs like Media Player?

      Thanks

      HI
Sorry to take so long to reply. I have been away from my computer for a while. I really thought you had hit the nail on the head with your advice as I had recently installed an updated driver for my video card. However, reducing the acceleration didn’t fix the problem.
      Thanks for the suggestion though.
      Cheers

      Thanks for your reply.

My understanding was that all AV progs disabled the System Restore feature and sure enough it was already disabled on my system. Even so, the _RESTORE folder and its myriad of files is still on the drive and there is no way to delete anything from this folder in real time (ACCESS DENIED message). However, if you re-boot to DOS (not from a DOS session) you can delete the files.

Anyway I took the plunge and deleted the offending files and so far everything is OK

Hi Thanks for your reply. I have not been able to try all your suggestions because this ‘phenomenon’ is very erratic and does not always happen. So in the last few days it has been a relatively grey free zone. However, today I did it again by switching back and forth between print preview in colour and pp in b&w. It happened on the third switch.
I am enclosing a Print Screen of the chart just to prove I have not gone gaga!
This effect does not go away on saving and re-opening the document. Your other tests I’ll try as and when.
One thing it kinda proves it’s not a monitor issue as I’ve tried it on two different pc’s now.
      Interesting though.
If it is a bug can I have it named for me?
      Cheers

      Duh confused
Sorry! On re- reading my post I can see why you would think I had lost the plot. What I meant to say was that the chart is in colour as per normal (red & blue bars). I have to print it so I choose b&w on the page setup options. However when I return to my chart sheet some of the bars have turned to grey scale. So now I have some blue and the ( formerly) red bars are now greyscale. Now, surely that is not meant to happen? Supose I next want to print it in colour?

    • in reply to: Using ALT key to select a block (Word 2000 ) #544798

I did the same thing with my home PC (ie merging the ‘corrupt’ registry key) but everything still worked normally.
The day I discovered the add-in I don’t think I rebooted so that may well have been the answer.
Anyway I suppose I should now tie a knot in this long thread. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions.
      Cheers

      Good point.
On some days (the ones where your hands feel like they have boxing gloves on) that may well have been the case. Alas this was not hapening here as I tried about every possible key combination. No matter! The problem is now solved thanks to BAM.
      Thanks for your input though
      Cheers Brian
