Well we’re making some progress. I did not touch the registry but I was able to restart this time (hands free) and it went straight to the administrator mode.

I re-installed and updated the antivirus which works now and tells me I’m free. I’ve also placed the the recovery console on the start menu. I made a new restore point

All of my settings seem to be normal when I go into my own account.

Only thing is – am I sitting on top of a time bomb? yikes

Should I try to clean up, leave well alone or what would you suggest to try next?

I searched for the keys and I found “cryptography” in the appropriate paths but underneath are 3 branches which do not even mention the word “providers”. I felt like the bomb disposal man faced with the red, green & blue wires – which do I cut? flee I decided (contrary to my nature ) to avoid the issue (perhaps it will go away). “Cryptography” can be found in other places but I feel even less inclined to touch these.

As far as the services go I have the same set up as demonstrated -i.e. already on auto. However I’ll try the boot later and get back to you (if I can! )

      Thanks for the reply

      Yup
Tried these things too (forgot to mention it) but I have no valid restore points (I was surprised too – I don’t know why as I have been running XP for about 2 months now).

The first time I managed to get up and running after the first debacle I went straight to the restore prog and made a new restore point (as I thought) but it still would not work when I tried it.

The trouble is I’ve tried so many things (I have a sheaf of KB articles to hand) that I tend to forget what I did at any one time scratch.

I’m a bit gung ho in that respect. doh

Many thanks to all who helped out. I now have been able to achieve my task and have saved hours of sweat & toil.

This excercise has also revived my interest in code!

      Many thanks for your reply.

I tried your code and it works beautifully and does exactly what I wanted it to do. As you say I will now have to write a litle routine to loop it through all the other cells in the range.

      Thanks again

      Many thanks for the reply.

I pasted your code into a VBA module, compiled it but it failed to work. It generates a 438 error (object does not support this property or method) and debugging stops at the .Bold = .Offset(0, -2).Font.Bold = True
Unfortunately I don’t use VBA enough to be able to suss out what is happening. Perhaps I am doing something silly?

Sadly I have had to come to the same conclusion as Hans. I tried saving in different formats and copying and pasting but the document information was always askew. I couldn’t guarantee that the information we were dealing with was still linked properly so in the end I requested and got a replacement file in Excel format. Yipee. Now everything is as it should be. I shall put the original file on the back burner and maybe one day ……hmmm.

Thanks anyway for your advice guys.

      Hi aron again.
After I posted I came across this which might just be the answer to your problem.

      Check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?…b;en-us;Q304943%5B/url%5D

Hope this helps as they give a workaround.

      Hi aron
What screen messages do you get with each configuration of memory installed and before WIndows starts?

Is the total RAM inserted accounted for?

If the machine boots successfully have you tried starting in safe mode? or other mode by pressing CTRL key during start up?

What size of Windows swap file do you have?

How big is the hard drive?

Sorry that the pictures were unhelpful I just wanted to show how strange the results were.

I am now including the two “Chapters” I am using to test the field codes on the WXP machine. In these I get the field codes to work. I note that if Ihe cursor is in the field and happen to press F9 then the codes no longer work and the only way to resurrect the situation is to close the document without saving.

When I copy these working docs to my W98 PC the field codes give the usual error message. hairout

To say I am confused would be doing an injustice to confused people.

Yes I did look at the previous posts. I tried putting in the full paths with double back slashes and I still get the same error message. !Invalid Character Setting

Now here is where it all gets a bit strange.

I was checking out Charles Kenyon’s post 91522 description and tutorials about the INCLUDETEXT field. I downloaded his tutorial files to an internet PC at work and then copied it to my own PC. I now had 2 identical copies of the tutorial on different PCs.

Both PCs run the same version of Word (XP) but one PC runs under Windows XP and my own runs under Windows 98.

On the PC running XP the footer was normal and read exactly as expected. On the W98 PC the exact same document footer had the error message as above !Invalid Character Setting

      I copied and pasted Charles

You are a genius. bravo Your advice about Outlook was spot on. bullseye I have to confess I was a little skeptical and I tried about every other suggestion with no luck. You see, the PC with the problem was not hooked up to the net and Outlook wasn’t running to my knowledge. In fact I had to do a search for it.

Anyway, when I found it and opened it, sure enough Word, Excel and Access were all checked in the Journal section. Unchecking them all means I now have super fast (relatively) shut down.

Thanks for the suggestion. I must admit to being a novice when it comes to anchors. Normally things go and stay where I want them so I don’t worry too much. On this occasion there was a table close by to the embedded chart but the anchor was not inside and removing the table gave the same result. Strange that it prints as it should on the laser printer though!

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, I have been away for a while. I ran through Wendell’s list – no avail. Phil – I checked all the add ins again and the Word Start up folder but there is nothing obvious. The behaviour continues.

      Hi Phil
A colleague and I wished to do the above today. He uses Word 2000 and I’m on XP. We both followed your directions to the T but he ends up with a !syntax error and I get a !Invalid Character Setting of !Invalid Character Setting:
Here is what I put into the Chap 2 footer
      { = {INCLUDETEXT “Chapter 1.doc” bk ! } + {page}} of { = {INCLUDETEXT “Chapter 1.doc” bk ! } + {NUMpageS}}

My documents are in the same folder and are named Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.

Is there something quirky about 2000 / XP or have we done something glaringly obvious?
The humble pie has been prepared and is ready for eating.
