    • in reply to: Explorer task bar and Alt+Tab icon #1352955

Explorer task bar means the explorer button on the task bar when explorer is open. My alt+tab just shows icons, maybe my control panel > personalization set to classic causes our Alt+Tabs to be different looking?

    • in reply to: Explorer Navigation bar (Folder view) reaction #1352876

That checkbox has no effect. It acts the same whether its checked or not. The panel on the right “opens” to the folder I click on, but the subfolders of that folder do not expand [display below the folder I click on]. I have to either double click as Jerry said or click the plus sign to the left of the folder. Could it be a registry entry that prevents this behavior?

    • in reply to: CE 2.0 database sdf file on pocket pc 2003 device #1338164

Thanks Wendell. Oh, so close! One of the options in VS 2010 is File > Open > (data type) .sdf. When I try to open that file I get an error:

This is not a valid SQL Server Compact Database file or this file version is not supported by current SQL Server Compact Engine.”
[*]So do I need an earlier version of SQL Server Compact Engine? if so, where do I get it?
[*]I have a data provider for .NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5. Do i need to install a data provider for .NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 2.0?
[*]One 3rd party vendor (primeworks.com) support said I can only open that database from the device while it’s on the device.

It does sound like a DNS setup problem. Oracle is tricky to setup, but is solid once done. I could help you better if you post screen shots of every setting in your Oracle DNS entry. Obviously you can blank out the sensitive information (SID, password (which doesn’t show anyway)) and there should still be enough info to help you.

    • in reply to: iTunes account theft strikes close to home #1234373

OK, this thread took on multiple topics, I’m sticking to mine. I found out the only way to manage your itunes account is to actually download the app (93Meg!!) and Store > Sign in from the menu. Now I need to take the advice in this O.P. original article and remove the credit card from my account. To do that, click “Edit Payment Information” and pick None across the top of the CC list.

    • in reply to: SSMS 2005 tab navigation #1234118

Unfortunately you are stuck with the behavior you describe – but you might submit a suggestion to the SQL Server team. I agree that the pop-up dialog box is pretty much worthless since you have to go to the mouse at that point to select an object other than the one you get by default.

How do you submit a suggestion to the SQL Server team?

    • in reply to: SSMS 2005 Object Explorer #1234116

@ Christoper: By “press the cross”, do you mean click on the “x” (close)? I don’t see a cross that means “Hide”.

@ Wendell: I keep the Object Explorer dockable, not floating, docked on the left hand side and “Auto-Hid” . As a consultant I am restricted to a 17″ screen.

Thanks jscher! That was exactly what I after!

Im trying to make the Ctrl+right do the opposite and its acting retarded. What’s wrong with this?

      Code:
      Sub WordRightToSpace()
'Hijack! Move insertion point to space after the word to the right
      With Selection
          If .Next.Text = " " Then
              .MoveRight wdCharacter, 1, wdExtend
          End If
          .MoveStartUntil " ", wdForward
          If Selection.Characters.Count <= 1 Then
' May be at a boundary with no space
              .MoveEnd wdLine, 1
          End If
          .Collapse wdCollapseStart
      End With
      End Sub

So my daughter (has me wrapped around her finger) convinces me to provide a CC so she can download apps for her iPod Touch. I say only if you give me your username/pw to your account. A month goes by, no charges, no problem. Now I have a $1 charge from iTunes on my account. red flag. I go to itunes.com to configure “my” account but there is no login, no My Account, nothing. How do I log in to change my account settings?

    • in reply to: Max Date #1231727

You need to let us know what FE you’re using. Looks like Access. Also are there three or are there four date/time fields in the subform?

Here is a start. read help on IIF and you should be able to complete this on your own.
put a textbox on the main form.
      in the textbox source put: =IIF(formName.subformName.date1ControlName > formName.subformName.date2ControlName, formName.subformName.date1ControlName,formName.subformName.date2ControlName)

This will give you the newest date of 2 controls. I don’t know what will happen if one or both of them is NULL. Post the results if it works or not.

    • in reply to: Connecting from one SQL DB to Another #1231726

With the limited info provided, the best I can do is start a “try this and post the result” deal.

Connect to ServerBDB2 and run the following in a new query:

      USE DB2
      SELECT *
      INTO NewTable
      FROM [ServerA].[dB1].dbo.TableName

    • in reply to: Reassessing and retuning Google's Chrome #1223489

      my 2¢:
1¢) ditto on the keyboard shortcuts. Since before the mouse was a required device, I’ve been an extremely high user of KS’s. Every app I run I memorize the shortcuts. I have been using Chrome for about a year (an IE convert) and I miss the ability to Alt+a get a list of my Favorites/Bookmarks/whatever were calling them today. That’s almost the only only time I reach for my mouse, when I want to navigate to a Chrome shortcut.

2¢) to get the cent sign, hold down the Alt key and type “0162” on the numeric keypad (doesn’t work on the numbers over the qwerty keys) then let go of the Alt key. I think that’s so cool! “0222” is somewhat useful for emoticon types.

    • in reply to: Win7 didn't warn me its firewall was running #1223476

Like Gomek, I utilize NAT on my DSL gateway as well and do not knowingly have any problems. I read somewhere that running a software firewall on the devices connected to this network is unnecessary, and not wanting any computing power taken away, I turn it off. I’m sure between me and my 16 yr old we visit questionable sites (seems to me I had a problem with misheardlyrics.com once), but I do not find any viruses or malware on our computers when I scan them. We practice and I preach safe computing “delete any unsolicited emails and never click on anything on a web site” (again, to my knowledge). In my ignorance, the NAT/AVG/Defender/Chrome “suite” is enough.

    • in reply to: New findings update WS Security Baseline #1223468

My 2¢: I started using AVG free on all my home PC’s/laptops as well as my kids, friends and business acquaintances, from a recommendation about 60 years ago in the Langalist. It has suited me fine, I don’t want to divert any energy from my other activities to change something that doesn’t seem broke. What worries me is that I never get a message saying “virus found” or “you have entered a dangerous site” or some such. Also I never get any Windows Defender messages. I periodically scan to see if the thing is working and it finds no problems. My computers work well, and nothing mysterious happens. Either I’m so blindly protected, or my clean computing practices are paying off, or my browser (Chrome) is THAT good, or something…to me, it aint broke. What bugs me is it’s not in the preferred list anymore. Should I change, or should I ignore?

    • in reply to: Hotmail's social networking busts your privacy #1219831

I must weigh in as well. I went through every permission setting to view what perms were defaulted. I was surprised that I was giving permission for MS to show *anything* at all. Good customer service would publish a service, default all options to “off”, inform it’s base of it’s existence and provide instructions on how to enable it. Well, I’m a Capitalist so since it’s a free service I’m going to cut MS some slack. If I were to pay for it I would follow that security wonk’s advice and close the account right quick. I for one appreciate the granular security, but despise the automatic “opt in” and the manual “opt out”. I’m a busy person, I can’t remaintain every site I’ve registered on and get anything done. Thank you Woody.

P.S. I understand that some of the things that were said just plain need to be said. I’m really holding back from joking about the heat in Phoenix!
