Thanks Michael for taking time to respond. Those all seem like very sound advice. I will follow through!

Geof, Thanks for the idea. Our AS/400 is an older model and we never installed SQL because of the cost (church environment). We also have delayed installing MSExchange for the same reason. We usually just dump to a delimited text file to the PC.
By importing into ACCESS we have now successfully created a report tha I think they can live with, though the formatting is simple. In fact, our PC administrator is happier with the idea of an Access report now because of the time it has been taking with some of the larger merges in Word. I hadn’t realized how much support time she spends with users’ difficulty with merges overall. So writing the report was the simpler solution for us.
Again, thank you for your input and taking the time!

Wendell, you confirmed my concerns. I’ll take another crack at a report and see if they’ll accept the limited formatting. We really don’t need a programming project just now.
      Thanks!

Legare, Got the real data today, and it is yyddd, just as you thought. The formula works just fine and I appreciate the reminder on copying to VALUES, since we’ll be doing a 7000 record merge and I always like to use values for that. I really appreciate your help!

Thank you, Legare. I assume then, that if it is formatted as yyyyddd it would change to Date(left(A1,4) … ? I am waiting for actual data now before I be sure. I appreciate the quick response. As a church we have a limited technical staff so these type of forums are invaluable to us!
      Thanks again!

PS – I was interested to see you are a woodworker. I am a carver and currently starting an large intarsia project just for fun.

Running Win98SE, and I had closed OL. Got to thinking about it and decided to make sure it did not load on boot, removed OL from startup folder and rebooted. This allowed me to rename the outcmd file and I restarted OL manually. Closed normally, then added advanced tool bar and closed, but it did not remember that. However, it has closed normally 2X now. We’ll see what happens!
      Thanks for the help!

Hi Lief, I think you may be on to something. I had already run disk diagnostics and scandisk with no events recorded. I looked at extend.dat properties. It has not changed since 3/01, long before this behavior began. The system does NOT allow me to rename or move the outcmd.dat file, but does not show read-only or any special attributes in the properties box. I changed the Outlook tool bar to add the advanced tool bar and it DID NOT remember the change after a closure and restart.
      Thanks!

Lief, thanks for the quick response. I use Win98SE, my files are all local, just my home PC, the simplest of configurations, I don’t even have a home network, and use dialup modem for e-mail. I checked out the MS reference in the suggestions from prior user questions, but it only addresses attachments causing the problem. My problem ONLY occurs on exit, (thankfully not other effects at all) and whether or not I had emptied the deleted items before or was prompted at shut down. Any other ideas?
      Thanks!
