      Gentlemen:

Are these PUP’s and PUM’s necessary for running Chrome? Because I am getting them too. Doesn’t Malwarebytes give us the option of deleting them each time it is run? Or am I imagining or hoping?
Would setting up task manager to auto run Malwarebytes say 10 minutes after my computer has booted up and E-set has done it’s
scan then Malwarebytes could come in and wipe them out. Or am I dreaming?

I do know since downloading Chrome whatever its new name is I have had nothing but trouble. My computer has slowed down
my screen shrinks and then sometimes it larger, lots of site break downs ie. my bank I wanted to make a payment which meant I had to go to another screen 2 times it gave me a stupid message about not finding it or something like that and I had to get out and re-load the page after getting out.

So Jonathanjoy.virus6 this is the only way to get rid of the PUP’s and PUM’s?
May I ask if you could bring your directions down a few levels so this newbie can understand what you are saying. PLEASE.

Thank you for any help you Gentlemen can give me would be greatly appreciated.

      I am running:
      Dell Inspiron N5010 Laptop
      Intel Core i5 2GB Mem
with a new hard drive 7??GB
      Win 7 Home PREM 64 bit SP1
      E-Set for Anti-Virus
      Malwarebytes
Slim Cleaner & CCleaner all the latest updates.
Plus I am trying to use LasPass for password management. Not so sure about this one.

      Glenda:confused:

Wow what a ride that was but BRUCE all those directions and software you posted for me to follow really made it easy (somewhat) to get rid of that ugly” MyScrapNook Toolbar:”. It took me awhile but it worked and I thank you very much for your help. In fact I thank all of you gentlemen that replied to my post.
I thought since it was an extension for GC that it would be all right to download, boy was I ever wrong.

      Thank you again…………Glenda

That Chrome Extension ID belongs to a Potentially Unwanted Program MyScrapNook Toolbar:

      38583-MyScrapNook

      Remove MyScrapNook Toolbar (Removal Guide)

      Bruce

      Thanks gentlemen:
Roland it did not work. I ended up using CCleaner to uninstall Chrome except for some of the web pages I saved.
reinstalled GC and it was working except the 2nd tab had the same error message. I just ignored it and kept on the 1 tab that had GC on it and was fine until 5 minutes ago when I lost my internet connection. That is the 2nd time in the last 2 to 3 months that it just all of a sudden looses the connection. What could that be causing that? Like I said it has happened only 2 times. I just used the internet connection key and it was back. So here I am. So what caused that and Why did I still have
that error message on the 2nd tab.

Bruce I didn’t think that I actually down loaded myscrapnook toolbar. You gave me a short-cut to remove myscrapnook toolbar or is that just instructions. Doesn’t matter I will click on it anyway and see what happens.
Bruce do i need to dump all the web pages I saved for different things. Is there a way to save them to something other than a web page? I really would like to keep them.

Ok gentlemen wish me luck I’m going to try again. First dumping myscrapnook toolbar then see what happens from there.

      Thanks
      Glenda

I just went through something similar with my Google Chrome. Goto:
      http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//165487-Trying-to-download-Google-Chrome-39-or-40?p=976019#post976019
A few other tech posters, with a little help from me, solved the problem. Maybe what they posted will help you.
It was a fun ride getting GC back working! 🙂

Ok I will give it a try. I am only running E-set, firewall, whatever else windows stuck in there. Malwarebytes is off and used when I do my weekly scan, So do I need to turn these off?
before downloading the browser repair and GC?

And last I can run Malwarebytes all the time even with E-Set?
What else would you recommend running for protection?

      Thanks……..Glenda

I am so tired of writing down all the passwords I made up, then have problems finding them in the book I use.

Do I need to be a techie to use these programs?

      thanks again for your input.

      F.U.N.,

It worked just fine at highest streaming setting on my 42″ TV. Granted the OP has a 65″ monster but ChromeCast is so cheap (I paid $29 for mine) that it’s worth a try for the wireless freedom IMHO. HTH

      Hello RetiredGeek

My daughter just bought me a (used out of the box) Vizo smart TV. Suppose to have wifi, netflix, huluplus etc…..
My problem is I can see my wifi connection and all 4 bars are green but it is locked no matter how many times I enter the password it will not unlock. What could I be doing wrong? Or is it the TV?

Chromecast can take whats on your computer screen and put it on the TV. Any special gimmicks. Is it using USB 3.0 port or HDMI. I think I have 1 HDMI on my laptop.

Thanks RetiredGeek for any help you can give me on my 2 questions.

    • in reply to: AD-Aware Antivirus by Lavasoft opening new tab in Chrome #1410897

I use AVG AV 2013 for my AV (paid version although free version is quite good as well), and MalwareBytes Antimalware Pro (free version is manual scan only, the Pro version runs in real time and plays well with other AV/AM apps) and both a S/W and H/W firewall.

You most likely have AdAware as your default search engine and perhaps as an add-on. This points out one of the problems that led me to dumping AdAware. It got very demanding and intrusive and tried to take over things (such as loading a different default search engine I did not want). You might have to disable all the add-ons associated with AdAware and dumping the search engine. You will most likely have to change the default to Google or Bing or whatever you wish to use. I would also then use Revo Uninstaller or other such app to uninstall AdAware and use the Advanced Scan to sniff out leftovers, then use CCleaner to find additional left over items.

Thanks Medico, I will check into AVG AV 2013 will have to go with free version, Already have MalwareBytes free version and SpyBot search and destroy it is also free. The only Anti-security that I pay for is E-Set and I am sure they are getting my bill ready right now. What could I replace E-set with for my security and anti-virus sniffer. Preferably free? I use Google for my search engine, so I don’t know why AdAware got itself in there too. But it doesn’t open a tab any more. It was suppose to be a manual backup AV.

      Thanks again…………Glenda

Sorry Bruce for not getting back to you. I did what you said and I am no longer having LavaSoft setting up it’s own tab.

      Thanks again for your help.

    • in reply to: Windows/Temp folder is huge(80gb) #1405071

I clean ALL temp files regularly, including Temp Internet Files. Regular maintenance can help to speed things up and free up a lot of space. In fact I have a Clean up batch file I use at Boot that automatically cleans all these temp files and runs the Windows Disk Cleanup app on steroids.

      Code:
      @Echo off
      cls
      [COLOR="#FF0000"]cleanmgr /sageset:65535[/COLOR]
      del /F /S /Q "%systemroot%temp*.*"

      del /F /S /Q "C:AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsHistory*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesLowContent.IE5*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesTemporary Internet FilesLowContent.IE5*.*"

      del /F /S /Q "C:Users%UserName%AppDataLocalTemp*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:Temp*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "C:Users%UserName%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesLowContent.IE5*.*
      del /F /S /Q "C:Users%UserName%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsHistory*.*

::Rem: No need to duplicate the following section for each registered User
      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%Cookies*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%recent*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%Local Settingscookies*.*"

      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%Local SettingsHistory*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%Local SettingsTemp*.*"
      del /F /S /Q "%homepath%Local SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5*.*"

      del /F /S /Q "C:$Recycle.Bin.Bin*.*"

      del /F /S /Q "C:Recycled*.*"

      cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Note: The sageset line (highlighted in red) can be deleted after the initial run because it remains set.

This will run many more cleanup sections than the normal Cleanup Manager. Just put a checkmark on everything you wish to delete. I check mark everything myself.

Simply paste this code into Notepad, then Save As a .bat file on your desktop. The first time you run it, it may take a while to complete.

So Medicio, I imagine this file you made is better than using CCleaner or SlimCleaner?

      Thanks for the info…………Glenda

    • in reply to: AD-Aware Antivirus by Lavasoft opening new tab in Chrome #1405070

      Thank you Bruce,

So Chrome can find the LavaSoft Secure Search and remove it or disable it is what I would like to do. I do run it once in awhile to make sure E-set got everything. If I remove it then will Ad-Aware run properly?

      Thanks for your input.

      Thank you Medico,

So what other apps do you recommend. I have e-set but it is getting ready to expire and I am wondering if I should dump it and go all freebies. I paid $70 for 2 years.

      thanks again

    • My adage is “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” If something seems not to be working, then drivers are a good possibility, but if your PC is working to your satisfaction, then why take the chance. If you do decide to update all the drivers, consider making a system Image prior to the updates in case something gets “broken” by the new drivers.

Often the drivers from specific manufacturers have been “doctored” by the manufacturer to suit their needs, not yours. If something truly is not working correctly I would be more inclined to go to the device manufacturer for drivers, not the PC manufacturer. YMMV

Thanks for your advice. I ended up fixing it myself in control panel>sounds> without updating ANY drivers.
      Again thanks for your help.

    • in reply to: 3 Partitions on Hard Drive #1376427

Ok Thank you gentlemen for your input. I was just wondering. I was thinking less stuff on the laptop maybe the better off it would be. I see your point and it is a very good idea. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, SP1 Dell i5 450 4.0GB 500GB.

Yes this is there, “Dell Datasafe Local Backup”, which allows you to burn a set of system recovery DVDs. I tried to do the backup of the system recovery onto DVDs but it got hung up and I never finished it. So I do NOT have the DVDs, but I have done an image of the entire drive just as it is on an external drive, in fact I used “RetiredGeek’s” Epiphany, using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition and Macrium Reflect. Everything turned out well, so I am set for now. So next time I will only image the “C” drive.

Most likely I will be keeping this laptop until it goes to computer heaven, hopefully that will be a long time. With your input I hope to be able to keep it running well.

I want to thank all of you for your input to this whole site, you have helped me a great deal.

      Thanks………..Glenda
