Are you using internet connection sharing with your husband’s computer being connected through yours? If that’s the case, then the icon won’t show up in his systray because he’s piggy-backing on your connection. We’ve got a similar setup here and the only time my husband’s computer shows the conection icon is when he connects through his own modem rather than through my connection.

That’s what I call “girl power” – we control the Internet (at least the connection to it). grin

You got a bit of superfluous code in the link to the read me file, Drk, resulting in a page not found.
Here’s another attempt for those who may want to read the IE6 Read Me

      Hi Zeno
I’ve never had a problem with windows not being visible at all but do run into situations where the window title bar is outside the desktop and thus not usable for closing ,moving or sizing etc. When this has happened I use alt + space bar which opens the window resizing menu (you’ll need to ensure that the invisible window is the active window when you do this), click the down arrow once to choose “move”, hit enter, then use the arrow keys to move the window to a place where it is again totally visible. Like I said, this is easier if you can see the window at least a little, but maybe it will help.

      good luck

Thanks for the tip MerC, I did see the discussion of Inocculate IT and other AV software in the Software Finds forum and was thinking of trying it out. Having read that other thread again, I will definitely switch and add a few of the other freebies you mentioned in that thread as well. Guess I’ll be visiting your site soon for all that.

As for finding the problem in McAfee – can’t really remember how it came to pass, but my husband asked one day what my settings were and suggested changing them to see if that would help and it did. – wish I could say it was more scientifically deduced but what the hey, the bottom line is that the original problem is fixed and now I only need to ensure I’m well protected in other ways.

      Thanks Leif,
My problem here was not so much how to handle the screen shot itself but how it would end up looking on the forum since you can’t actually see the results of your file attachment in the preview screen. I guess I should have used the test area first to get a feel for how things translate into the forum windows. Will play in there a bit before trying something like this again.

Have now edited previous message to include a smaller version of the screen shot.

I have to confess that I didn’t read the first instructions properly and tried to enter jview | more in the run command from the start menu I’m soooo embarassed! Guess I’ve been away from using DOS too long. Have now run it from a real DOS prompt and it works as indicated. Sorry for casting doubt upon this issue.

for anyone not wanting to use DOS, have attached a screen shot (I think) of where you can find this same information in sysinfo.

Whoa, Sorry about the size of that screen shot – my first attempt at attaching something like that – will try to do better next time….am just a in this forum thing. (am planning to become much more adept and maybe even an expert in something, you never know )

Thanks for your suggestions. After much searching, tweaking, reinstalling, uninstalling, registry cleaning and rebuilding etc.etc.etc. it appears that the culprit was McAfee Vshield virus scan online. Why this all of a sudden started getting in the way is a mystery to me, but having checked the McAfee forum it appears that I’m not alone. I’ve managed to solve the problem by changing the settings to scan program files and documents only rather than scanning all files (which is the default).

Have been “freeze free” for a week now so hopefully this will remain the case (insert crossed fingers emoticon here when available) and McAfee will fix the problem so I can go back to “all files” protection.

Am posting this for the benefit of anyone else out there who may be having similar problems and hasn’t thought to try this…it’s rather an obscure problem and if you’ve been using a particular virus program for years like I have, it’s not the first place you think to look, is it?

      Hi Jeff

I installed the new VM two weeks ago and everything seems to be working fine (to be honest, don’t really know how to tell if it was causing problems). Just thought I’d put my two cents worth in.

BTW, you can check which version you’ve got through System Information utility by clicking on the Internet Explorer section – don’t have to use the DOS command suggested (which incidentally didn’t work for me when I tried it).

      Ian,

Glad (no pun intended) I could be of service, although Phil’s the real culprit and deserves the credit for recommending that site – he’s mentioned the langa list a number of times in other threads – I’m surprised you haven’t followed up on it before this! It really is a great one.

      Hi Phil
You found it in the Langa list of 25-01-2001 which you just referenced in the PukaPuka post in another thread. The reference to Reg Cleaner is at: http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2001/2001-01-25.htm#2 – this has been bugging me too since I had found it and downloaded it as a result of something written here in the lounge as well.

      regards

Thanks for the info. Following your advice I’ve managed to rid myself of the beta version of that vgx.dll file but am still hanging so will have to keep looking for other solutions.
