      Hi Peter

OSA is a microsoft Office app. Don’t know exactly what the acronym stands for but I’ve always thought it was Office Startup Application (my own interpretation based on the fact that it lives in my startup directory and results in the Office toolbar being started up.)

Sorry I can’t tell you more about this but maybe this info will help you in the right direction if you want to find more details.

PC Magazine’s Explorer Notes may be what you’re looking for – available at ZDNET Downloads
      described as follows:

Explorer Notes 2 lets you associate a note of up to 255 characters with any file or folder. You add or edit notes via the right-click context menu, and search for notes using the Start menu

      Hi Michael

You can use msconfig to disable programs from startup

At the start menu > run, type msconfig

Click the entries to uncheck what you don’t want.
If your not familiar with this utility, I would suggest you do a search in this forum on Startup menu or msconfig – there are a number of other threads dealing with this problem which also warn about what entries you should NOT delete.
Example being the two entries of powerprofile – both need to be left alone.

You may also want to check this message in the Software Finds forum regarding Systray tools.
      Hope this helps.

Another utility in the ZDNET list is Favorites Sweeper described as follows:

Favorites Sweeper is a simple tool that helps maintain the integrity of your Internet Explorer Favorites. It’s a little limited in scope, but it’s fast and very easy to use. Select Favorites folders to scan, and click your mouse to initiate the process. Favorites Sweeper validates each link and reports any problems found. It then allows you to complete the cleaning by removing selected links reported as invalid. The Favorites Sweeper free trial period lasts for 14 days.

Added this one after I realized the previous was not meant for IE favorites. Sorry about that. bingo

I picked up a handy little utility called Link Sweeper from zdnet a couple of years ago and am still using it. Unfortunately can’t find it there anymore, but a quick search of the zdnet downloads turned up one called X-link which looks like it will do what you want. Haven’t used it myself so can’t advise but the following description is included on ZDNET:

X-Link is a simple utility that searches for shortcuts whose targets are not valid. To put the process in motion, just select a drive and click on Search. The program quickly displays a comprehensive list of bad shortcut links. You can delete them individually, or clear them all in the blink of an eye. X-Link is very fast, easy to use, and — best of all — it’s free. Reviewed on May 4 1998

It’s an old review, but as I said, the utility I’m using is equally as old and still works fine despite upgrades of Windows and IE. Hope this helps smile

but it never occurred to me (rarely does!) to attack it using Windows NT Explorer (rather than Internet Explorer) on WINNTOffline Web Pages

interesting comment – I thought that’s what you were doing yesterday when we were discussing the offline web pages folder – guess I need to work on my communication skills a bit…. shrug wink

Glad to hear you’ve got the problem solved.

    • in reply to: Synchronisation problems #520648

No need to apologize, Merc. I know I’ve seen multiple instances of desktop.ini but had never really paid much attention to where they are or wondered why they might be there. that’s one of the things I like about this forum – you learn something new every day! Thanks for the heads up on that.

    • in reply to: Synchronisation problems #520585

Another thought – since you’ve upgraded to IE 5.5 and these pages are from before the upgrade – you may find them in the Channels folder of your favorites – saw something about that in the IE help section about offline viewing.

    • in reply to: Synchronisation problems #520584

This gets curiouser and curiouser! Sounds to me like NT4 has gotten mixed up between the “offline web pages” folder and “temporary internet files” folder. I’m also on NT4 here and the desktop.ini file is in my “temporary internet files” folder (under winntprofiles“my userid”…) perhaps that list of offline web pages is in your temporary internet folder under your user profile? A long shot, I know, but now that I’m into this I hate to leave it unsolved. crazy

Ok, John, that’s a horse of a different colour exclamation Have you checked your windows directory for a folder called “offline web pages”? I have one (am at work and therefore am on winnt but am assuming there is a similar folder in other windows versions). That folder contains the list of the pages you’ve made available offline and if you delete them from there they’ll be gone from the synchronization list. I just tried this so I know it works. grin At least that will solve part of your problem.

Hopefully we’ll get the rest of it worked out eventually as well. Will let you know as soon as I come up with other bright ideas.

    • in reply to: Synchronisation problems #520575

      Hi John

Can’t say I’ve got a lot of experience with synchronization. Have used the “make available offline” feature but mostly to save pages that I actually don’t want to update (synchronize) so always choose the manual synchronisation property in the “make available offline” customization dialogue.

As for getting rid of, can’t you just use organize favourites to remove those pages from your favourites list? I also picked up a shareware program from zdnet (I think) called Link Sweeper which checks all my favourites and bookmarks for broken/no longer existing links and cleans them out of the list automatically (if you choose). An additional feature is synchronization of favourites and bookmarks between IE and Netscape.

I don’t know if this helps you a whole lot, but at least you know now that somebody has heard your cry for help! Sorry I didn’t reply earlier but had hoped that there may be another lounger out there with more useful info than I could provide. shrug

sorry about that – in my first attempt the url got mangled – have edited and it should be ok now, but for the record the proper URL is http://www.ilchiro.org/medical_shorthand.htm

    • in reply to: Seeking recommendations for a Medical Dictionary #520511

      John

There is a pdf file of medical shorthand symbols here which will give you an idea of the type of fonts referred to.
      Hope this helps. shrug

    • in reply to: LoadPowerProfile #520291

      Hi Sherry

Both of those load power profile entries are required so don’t uncheck either of them. I ran across an MS Knowledge base article on that just the other day but unfortunately don’t have the reference here at work to pass on. At any rate, the article said that both loads are necessary.

Ok, that’s a different situation. You may want to check out the following thread which talks about a couple of tools available on your win 98 CD. Two of these are systray tools which may help you with this problem. I’ve never used them myself so can’t say for sure that they’ll help.
If I think of anything else I’ll come back later.
