Thanks for that info Leif – we followed the instructions as posted but found that the “disable in this hardware profile” was already “unticked” (empty). However, this got us thinking outside of the box, and we decided to leave the audio device as is and disabled the “Creative SB16 Sound Emulation” found under “creative miscellaneous devices” in the device manager list. This did the trick nicely. joy No more shutdown problems – at least for today. My husband thanks you as well.

    • in reply to: Lotus Notes lost document (IE 5.0) #551405

I’m no LN guru but have been struggling with LN databases for a couple of years now. Whether or not you can save changes to a Word document in the LN database seems to depend on the way in which you have chosen to “store” the particular document. If it is stored as an attachment to a Lotus document, then any changes you make will not be stored unless you attach a new version. If you want to be able to change the Word document in the Lotus database, you need to put it in the database as an “object” in a lotus document. That way you can open the word document, edit it and when you close it Lotus will ask if you want to save your changes.

I lost many a document in just the way you describe until I discovered this aspect of Lotus. As far as I know, there is no temporary save area where the document with all your changes can be recovered. If you don’t want to go the object route, then you need to detach the document to a work area, make your changes to it and then re-attach it to your Lotus document.

Hope this helps…at least in the future.

      Hi Bruce

You may want to check out Project Place which is an internet based collaboration server. It’s designed for large projects and costs bucks if you want to use it on a multi-project scale, but they advertise that your first project is absolutely free, so if you only intend to use it for one “project” it offers all the features you’re looking for (plus) and doesn’t cost a thing.

Sorry about that – guess I should have checked those links before referring them. thanks for catching that Merc. The other program mentioned in that same thread is SeeThru and still available thru ZDNET.

    • in reply to: Desktop Question #549659

check out Transparent Desktop Descriptions thread for a couple of suggestions – it contains links to downloadable freeware apps that will help you do this.

      Hi Eileen
You’ve really got my curiosity peaked and even more so because the site you refer to is in Spanish and I can’t make heads or tails out of it – where can I find the smiley panel there???? I’d really like to see Flash used as it “should be” since I am no great fan of Flash as it is generally used on websites.

      Hi Maria

check some of the sites referenced in this thread maybe there’s something there for you.

Another good resource for everything Word is the Word MVP site which provides lots of hints, tips and tutorials.

      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: IE 6.0 won’t install (IE 6.0 from 5.5) #539497

Your problem could be due to the use of McAfee which does not yet support IE 6.0. See Mcafee forum for more info. Although I didn’t see your specific problem, a quick glance at the Active shield message, produced a very clear statement from the McAfee support team that IE 6.0 is not supported and instructions on how to restore IE 5.5

      Hi Drk

Have you checked out http://www.zdnetonebox.com? It’s a free email, phone and fax service which also provides automatic forwarding of email as well as filters for excluding unwanted messages. I’ve had an account there for a couple of years and have yet to receive any spam. there’s also a feature to have notification sent to ICQ if you’re interested in that.

    • in reply to: Synchronizing Favorites (Version 5) #531685

A quick search on http://www.zdnet.com for “synchronize favorites” brought up a number of interesting looking utilities which may provide what you’re looking for. I’ve used SyncUrls to synchronize favorites and bookmarks between IE and Netscape but there are also a couple of others there which claim to be able to synchronize your favorites between multiple computers.

      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: MS Briefcase? #529782

      Hi Erik

I don’t use MS Briefcase myself but remember seeing a discussion on this topic a couple of months ago in the general office solutions forum at Briefcase.
      Hope this helps.

    • in reply to: Registered User #1784505

Hey, thanks for asking that question Linda and thanks for your answer Gary. With my double last name those little comments in Excel were always really long but I had never taken the time to figure out how to change it other than actually typing over what Excel automatically filled in (rather defeating the purpose of the feature!). Now in a twinkling of an eye it’s fixed to just insert my initials
      cheers

    • in reply to: Start Screen Saver #527973

There are a number of different ways to accomplish what your user is looking for. One is to place a shortcut on the desktop to the screen saver of choice. (find the .scr file in the windows directory and drag it to the desktop)

Another is to choose a screen saver which allows you to configure a cursor position which will turn it on whenever the cursor is placed in that position (usually the corners of the screen so that if you move your cursor into the chosen corner the screen saver will be activated).

      Hope this helps

    • in reply to: Win98 “Auto Arrange” Default #526830

Have you tried setting up one folder to auto arrange and then clicking: View|Folder Options|View|Like current folder ?
Once you’ve set one folder to behave the way you want it to, this option should cause all others to take on the same characteristics.
      Hope this helps.

Hi EASY – just to clarify that date confusion – the lounge is set up to show the date in Year/Month/Day format. So the date of your post is – May 10th 2001. It’s confusing at first, but you’ll get used to it I’m sure.

Welcome to the lounge and thanks for the info.
