    • in reply to: Java: Patching’s good, but removal is better #1348172

      Note should be taken of
      http://blogs.computerworld.com/cybercrime-and-hacking/20926/despite-new-patch-java-7-still-dangerous-go-version-6
      August 31, 2012
…It seems that in the Update 7 patch, Oracle blocked the road to the bug, but did not fix the underlying problem. In part, that may explain how Oracle issued a patch so quickly. From what these articles report, Security Explorations was able to find another path to exploiting the same flaw. A detour, if you will.

As I wrote last time, Windows users can download the latest edition of Java 6, Update 35, from Oracle hereand here.

For anyone that needs Java, the path is now brutally obvious, go with version 6 rather than 7. Version 6 has fewer features (the bug is in a new feature that only exists in Java 7) and Security Explorations found they could not (yet at least) break it.

Outside consultant found drive fails diagnostics and has to be replaced.

    • in reply to: Edit Received Messages? #1322458

No – Outlook 2010 has an ACTIONS selection that allows full editing of messages.
I’m looking for this capability in Non_Outlook email software.

    • in reply to: Top iPad apps for Windows users: Part II #1305745

I had no intention of getting an iPad (or any other tablet), but was gifted with one.
I’m working on getting up to speed and would be interested to hear of iPad resources a Windows user could look to.
I’ve started my own site to keep track of this stuff –

    • in reply to: Passwords — don’t take them with you #1298609

Using passwords in browsers should also be considered. It is a great convenience to allow the browser to remember the passwords to frequently accessed sites.
In Firefox it is highly recommended to use a Master Password. Otherwise passwords are openly seen by anyone who knows where to look.
The setting is in Options-Security to remember passwords.

    • in reply to: Exchange 2007 Outlook Web Access blocks JPG #1287634

I haven’t found the cause for that one account.
I have a workaround by moving it from webmail to Outlook POP access.
Now attachments come thru without any blocks.
      😉

    • in reply to: IE 9 menu dim problem #1287617

The problem disappeared and now IE9 menus are displayed normally.
I’m guessing there was a dialog box somewhere that I missed that was looking for a response.
      😉

    • in reply to: Exchange 2007 Outlook Web Access blocks JPG #1286654

There is no message size restriction and JPG at 200K should not be a problem.

    • in reply to: The need for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 #1281530

Concerning “Ready for a new System Update Readiness Tool?”, there is a Microsoft comment at
      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
Important This update is offered on Windows Update only to computers that have a condition that the tool could resolve.”

I take this comment as an indication that the Tool need not be manually installed unless there appears to be a problem with Updates.

    • in reply to: Saving Outlook messages to edit? #1265430

It is for my own reference.
Good suggestion on copy and paste.
However, to easily pickup header info I would do a Forward first.
      Thanks

    • in reply to: Insert Hyperlink doesn’t show full network #1264394

      This answer works!

It still bothers me that the Network selections fails to come up blank.

    • in reply to: Insert Hyperlink doesn’t show full network #1264392

      Thanks for the suggestions.
Of the 20 other computers on the network, only the 6 running Windows 7 show up in Windows Explorer Network. One of them with Windows Server 2008 shows and Network files can be accessed there.

In WORD 2010 I try Insert Hyperlink. Selecting Network shows searching and then it comes up empty.

    • in reply to: Security log on this system is full #1223827

Process Explorer is good for giving some insight into what is going on, but so far there has been no indication where the failures are originating.

Resorting to Help-Understanding Event Viewer, I find
“By default, security logging is turned off. You can use Group Policy to enable security logging.”
      So the next question is
Why is default to have security logging turned off?
