Acronis TI looks a good choice but $50 is a lotta bucks for me… I was wondering what anyone would recommend?

      Simple incremental daily b/u software.

Karen’s Replicator is free, efficient and highly recommended

    • in reply to: Scanning from a network printer #1211799

Doh Oh! I now see the difference. Thanks for the lesson.

Network scanners are available, but are fairly specialised pieces of kit.

You can buy software that claims to make scanners a shared network resource, but I’ve no experience of them.

      here’s one I found on a search

However, it will be a shared resource rather than a true network scanner (as per Gerald’s reply).

    • in reply to: Google Chrome versus FF #1211509

Sorry, I do not have the patience or time to investigate why Chrome suddenly, with no changes what so ever, started to crash. I still have IE, which I am very happy with, and FF, which is showing lots of promise, so I will stick with these for now. Quite honestly I did not see that big of a difference with Chrome’s speed, and when it started crashing unexpectedly, that convinced me. It had some nice features, all of which I can get from the other 2 with minor tweaks.

That’s why I’m suggesting you run Malwarebytes. It may well be an infection rather than a problem with Chrome itself.

    • in reply to: Google Chrome versus FF #1211474

Chrome keeps crashing. Many times in the lat several minutes. Good bye Chrome. I had not made any changes in Chrome. Started crashing while trying to use a Contact Us on a web site I use all the time. Then crashed twice while I was trying to write this response. yes it’s fast, but it seems unstable, at least to me. I will continue testing FF. I did have to set the Lounge to always open with IE even when using FF because my Last Pass does not work on this site with FF, not sure why because it does seem to work with all other sites. FF is nice in that it does give that option.

Try running Malwarebytes before you write off Chrome. I had a problem affecting Chrome and Mailwasher for most of last week that was solved by running Malwarebytes in safe mode.

Can I continue to use IE8 as my default browser after downloading and installing Google Chrome or when I install Chrome will it take over as my default? Second, what add ons are recommended to adequately test Chrome? Thanks for you help.

To be honest I can’t remember whether Chrome tries to make itself the default browser, but even if it does, you can always change the default back to IE8 if you choose.

I’m very happy with Chrome and it’s certainly my default now.

Add Ons ? Why would you want those?

    • in reply to: Meter reading spreadsheet #1211173

I am doing a spreadsheet of meter readings. I need a formula that will not allow a negative number but rather roll over to 0’s. For example, if a reading one month is 9999 and the next month the reading is 0028 since the meter itself has rolled over, I need to be able to show that in the cell that reflects the usage for the month. Hope I’ve explained this clearly enough. Thanks.

      Start meter reading in A1
      End meter reading in B1

      Useage =if(B1<A1,B1+(10000-A1),B1-A1)

    • in reply to: Zone alarm and free anti-virus #1210569

I am rebuilding an XP Home machine for a charity donation. I can’t get the MS firewall to turn on so I use Zone Alarm Firewall. I can’t find a free antivirus (AVG, Avast, Avira) that does not conflict with ZA. Any suggestions? I’d be happy to change to a different firewall if I can just get both freebies to play well together.
      Thanks!

It sounds as though the XP reinstallation is incomplete, which is why you can’t get the MS firewall to run.

Comodo is a free alternative to Zone Alarm that you could consider.

    • in reply to: Auto Connect Wireless on Boot-up #1210165

NIC and router correct. My router requires PSK (pre-shared key) on mode types except for WEP and bits. Mine is set on WPA/WPA2-Personal) PSK and encryption TKIP+AES. Reset and installed router again. All is fine except Windows 7 does not show active network in Manage wireless connections. Every time I try to add it, enter data and click next, I get “Access denied”.

      What firewall are you using?

    • in reply to: Hidding Contents Of A Cell In The Formula Bar #1209752

I cannot get this. I want to hide certain cell in the formula bar. in fact three different columns with two colums in between each of the hidden columns but i want to have all the other cell accessable to key numbers on except for these 3 formula colums of cells. what am i doing wrong?

What you need to do is this –
      Select the whole sheet.
      Go to Format | Cells
Select the Protection Tab and untick the Locked tickbox
      OK
Select the columns you want to hide
      Go to Format | Cells
Tick the Hidden tickbox (and the Locked tickbox too if you want)
      OK
Now go into Tools | Protection and protect the sheet.
      OK

What are you getting ? Can you post an example?

    • in reply to: Copying formulas #1209611

Having trouble with excell 2007 copying a formula I’ve created. I made the formula =S2/A2 which gives me the total of S2 divded by the static number in a2. I want to divide s3 and s4 and so own by the stattic number in a2. The problem is when i try to drag my formula down it changes my formula to s3/a3. Is there a way to have it leave my formula s3/a2 and so on?

If you want your reference to A2 to be ‘absolute’ – i..e fixed, you need to write it as $A$2.

There is a quick way of doing this, by hitting F4 when you’ve entered your initial A2. Depending on how many times you hit F4, you can change whether the reference is fully Absolute, or only absolute for rows or columns ($A$2 or $A2 or A$2).

It took me years to discover the F4 trick!

    • in reply to: Limited Or No Connectivity #1209514

I have contacted both the tech support for my wireless router and the manufacturer of my laptop and I am as confused as if I had done neither. Lately I have been getting the error message “Limited Or No Connectivity” when trying to access the Internet wirelessly with my laptop.

So my question is what does this mean and is it the router or modem in my computer.

      Thanks

Have you tried changing the channel used by your wireless router? Try channels 1, 6 and 11 to see if you get an improved connection on one of them.

We had a period when one of our pcs wouldn’t connect to the wireless router even though the other laptops were fine, changing the channel made all the difference.

    • in reply to: Recognizing external microphone #1209087

I disabled the external microphone on my HP DV4-1220US laptop, in the “recording devices” dialog box of Vista 64..

Whaddaya know, the microphone didn’t only get disabled, it disappeared from the list of devices, so I couldn’t re-enable it.

I can’t find it anywhere in the list of devices in Device Manager, either.

So, what do I do to get it back?

Right click the recording devices dialog box – untick the “hide disabled devices” option. Better still untick both boxes, then go and see what other soundcard devices you have uncovered.

    • in reply to: 2 Figure captions for one picture #1208820

Therefore, I would like to import a 2 panel graph into Word and apply a different Figure Caption for each panel. The Figure Captions should be consecutively numbered and adjust correctly if preceding figures are deleted/added so everything is correct when I generate a TOC. An example of a 2 figure jpg is attached.

Is there an easy way to do this, or is the tweaking the best way?

      Thanks.

This is purely speculative as I’ve never used Figure Captions in a TOC before but could you put 2 totally blank and transparent gifs (each with a Figure Caption) over the two graphs in the panel? Lock them together and see if the Figure Captions are correctly displayed in the TOC.

      It might work.

    • in reply to: Convert entire column from F to C #1208786

I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “copy the formula down.” What I’ve done is to copy the formula, paste it into the next row down, and manually replace the number cell information. For example, delete “B3” and type in “B4.” Is that what you mean?

      Thanks, sorry for being thick.

Select Cell B3, the bottom right corner is a black box. When your mouse goes over it, the cursor changes from a large white cross to a thin black cross.
While it’s a black cross, click and (holding the button down) drag downwards for several cells. Release. The formula will fill all the cells you have selected.

That’s what’s called ‘copying the formula down’,

    • in reply to: Convert entire column from F to C #1208783

Thanks. I had seen that but it doesn’t seem to allow converting more than a single cell at a time. I’m sure I’m missing something though. Is there a way to use CONVERT on a range of cells (in this case, a full column)?

Select an empty column – in the formula bar type =CONVERT(A1,”F”,”C”), then hit Control + Enter. This will set the formula for every cell in the column.

If you want to replace the values in the original column, select the column you have just populated, copy it to the clipboard and Paste Special | Values over the original column.
