    • in reply to: How do I find the Path of Word 2007 #1217147

      Hi,

I just got a Microsoft keyboard and mouse. I am able to assign favorite programs to one of five keys on the keyboard for quick launch, but I must know the path of the program. One of the programs I would like to assign to a Favorites key is Word 2007. How do I determine the path of Word 2007 on my computer? What files do I go to?

      Thank you.

In general, if you right click on a shortcut to a program, and view the Properties, the path to the program is in the ‘Target’ field.

    • in reply to: Lock (Protect) one row in Excel #1215632

I think I tried what you want me to do; however, when I get to the Protect Sheet window, that’s where I get lost. I have no idea what to check/uncheck. If I leave it as it is, all the cells are not protected. I have attached the window I am referring to. If you can help further, thank you.

As it is, with the two items ticked (‘select locked cells’ and ‘select unlocked cells’) you will be able to click on a cell but the locked row should be protected against changes.

If you untick the ‘select locked cells’ you won’t be able to click on a cell to select it either.

I need to lock (protect) one row in Excel. I tried “Lock only specific cells and ranges in a protected worksheet”. Can’t seem to make it work. HELP ME, PLEASE! Thank you.

      Select the whole worksheet
Ctrl +1 to bring up the Format dialog
Untick the Locked tickbox on the Protection tab
      Close the Format Dialog
Select the row you want to protect.
      Ctrl +1 again
      Tick the Locked tickbox
      Close the Format Dialog
      Tools Protection Protect Sheet…

      Does that work?

You mentioned they have to change the name. Why is this a necessary step? What is it about the name that must be changed?

Perhaps this is a file association problem with the document suffix.

It could also possibly a long path/long file name issue. It probably isn’t, but it could be!

    • in reply to: Looking for USB soundcard with these features. #1215085

      Hello all,
I’ve been looking for an external USB soundcard that allows me to use my microphone, use stereomix, and has line-in functionality since I enjoy recording from external sources. That’s it. That’s basically all I need, so info on a relatively cheap card that can do these things well would be much appreciated. The soundcard on my vista laptop is absolutely horrible and lacks these basic features. I really hope some of you can help as I have no idea what to buy. Thanks guys!

For some reason related to the RIAA control of the music industry and imposing rules on what people are allowed to do, Vista is generally shipping with restricted functionality on Soundcards. As a result of theirf lobbying , Stereo Mix is often disabled.

Before you buy yourself a new soundcard, try this.

Go to the sound controller in Control Panel and right click. to bring up the properties.
Select ‘Display Disabled Devices’ and ‘Display Disconnected Devices’

This may well bring up the missing ‘Stereo Mix’ device, which you can then enable.

    • in reply to: Different headers in same Word document #1214561

Hmmm . . . I can’t seem to find the Same as Previous icon on the toolbar. I have Insert AutoText, Insert Page Number, Insert Number of Pages, Format Page Number, Insert Date, Insert Time, Page Setup, Show/Hide Document Text, Link to Previous, Switch Between Header and Footer, Show Previous, Show Next, and Close.

Is the Same as Previous icon in a different version of Word than the one I’m using? (Word 2003, SP3)

      Thanks,
      Tracey

Yes, sorry, I’ve only got W2007 and W97 here – Use ‘Link to Previous’, that should do it.

    • in reply to: Different headers in same Word document #1214551

Hi all. I’m new to this lounge, so please forgive me any obvious newby mistakes. 🙂

I am working in MS Word 2003, SP3. I have a document that I want to have two differerent headers for–the first part of the document are the instructions for how to fill out a form, and the second part of the document is the form itself. I have a new-page section break between the first and second parts of the document, and I want the header of the first section to say “Procedure” and the header of the second section to say “Inspection Checklist”. However, when I open the header of either section and edit the text of the header, the change appears in both headers. The online Help for Word implies that I should be able to have different headers using section breaks, but it doesn’t give me any details on HOW to do it.

Anyone out there know what I’m doing here?

      Thanks,
      Tracey

When you bring up the Headers and Footers toolbar one of the icons has the pop-up text ‘Same as Previous’. That’s the one you want to click

If you can get a length of network cable you can directly link the laptop to the router and read/reset the password without having to reset all the other settings.

    • in reply to: turning the ribbon off in microsoft word #1214015

I’m curious how the change from the old menu and toolbar interface to the ribbon interface made things worse for blind users. Is it harder to access certain features of Word?

Control of toolbars seems to be severely restricted because of the Ribbon, and I’m not aware that we can now change the ‘Alt+’ keys that Redmond has decided we should use.

    • in reply to: Video Editing #1212558

I have just purchased a new video camera and am seeking advice about software for editing video clips. As I am new at this most of my videos are pretty bad, with just a few items that I would like to keep.

The software that came with the cam corder (canon) will let me join clips together, but won’t let me crop unwanted clips out of the middle. I am looking for a video editor that will display my clips frame by frame, with the option of removing the frames I don’t want and retaining and optionally re-sequencing the frames I want to keep. Seems pretty obvious to me but I can’t find these features in the software I have.

So, any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated. I don’t necessarily want free software, but if I buy something I want it to do what I want it to do and be recommended by someone with more expertise than I presently possess.

      Thanks……….Derek Helling

If you are a Windows user, Windows Movie Maker from Microsoft is a very good editor for the price (free !). I’m not sure about the ‘frame by frame’ editing though – it certainly allows you to split clips and recombine them so that you can leave out the frames you don’t want.

I had some video software bundled with our video camera (also a Canon, but from about 10 years ago), and WMM is much more competent than that.

It used to come bundled with XP and Vista, but I’m pretty certain that you have to download it from the MS website with Windows 7.

    • in reply to: Formula (not results) displays in cell #1212552

My colleague has a spreadsheet that he has used for years. Now he must use it in Excel 2007, and he’s getting very frustrated. For example—

In cell G45, he wants to display the sum of the numbers in cells G18 thru G44. In cell G45, he types =SUM(G18:G44), then hits Enter. G45 now displays the formula he just typed, not what he’d expect. What’s the fix?

Two things to check before he gets too frustrated!.

On the Office button select ‘Excel Options’ , Advanced, and scroll down to Display Options for this worksheet. Make sure that the “Show formulas in cells instead of calculated results is unticked.

Secondly, before entering the formula in the cell, check what Format it is expecting (right click, Format Cells…). If it is Text, it will not calculate the results. Change the format to General and re-key the formula

    • in reply to: LOST MY HORIZANTAL SCROLL BAR #1212178

Yes GFamily the scroll is moved to the right and if i double click it is creates a split screen and i could move the scroll within the split screen. if i close it reverts back to a non usable horizontal scroll. I do have the worksheet maximized.

If you are seeing this, , you need to make sure you’re dragging the leftmost of the two blocks otherwise you will ‘split’ the screen as you’ve found.

On re-reading your reply I see you double-clicked; I suggest a click and drag (on the leftmost of the 2 blocks) rather than double-click.

If you don’t see a double block I suggest you reinstall Excel.

    • in reply to: LOST MY HORIZANTAL SCROLL BAR #1212134

yes. The horizontal scroll is turned on.

      Hmmm,
Has the left hand side of the scrollbar been moved right over to the right? – do you see a sort of double block at the right hand end? (pre 2007)

    • in reply to: LOST MY HORIZANTAL SCROLL BAR #1212123

For some unknown reason other than my rediculous blunder, I lost my horizantal scroll bar. I tried to get it back but the best I could do was open up a freeze pane window to get a horizontal scroll bar on the newly opened pane.

Anyone out there know how to fix this?

Have you checked Tools | Options | View and seen whether the Horizontal Scroll Bar is ticked?

For 2007, Excel Button | Excel Options | Advanced

    • in reply to: Scanning from a network printer #1211968

Dell do an all in one unit that scans across the network – sorry, can’t remember the model, but it was small office variety.

      cheers, Paul

Canon do an MFP (Pixma MX320) for about $100 that scans straight to USB that could be a useful alternative to a network scanner. You need to go to the scanner anyway, so being able to use it without booting anyone off the other computer may be do-able.
