    • in reply to: MP3-tracking software #1238668

I would like recommendations on what you consider the best, and most user friendly (ease of use), software to split/make tracks in large MP3 audio files (This will be used to make tracks in MP3 Operas). Prefer free software, but will consider paid. The feature in this software that I plan on using, almost exclusively, is the SILENT DETECTION to pinpoint placement of the tracks. I have tried Audacity but I have had problems and it has not worked well for me. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have used MP3DirectCut quite successfully using the ‘Pause detection’ mode to split tracks.

      That does work, thanks.

But I would also like to find out why the formula that I am entering ends up being in quotes and not working. I suspect I am entering it wrong somehow.

Are you including the ‘=’ sign when entering =ISBLANK(A1) ?

Bulk Rename Utility is very good too. It’ll even extract data from EXIF or ID3 tags to help renaming photos and mp3 files.

    • in reply to: Finding non-0 value in list #1231321

      Windows XP, Excel 2007, sp2

I have a list of numbers which relate to cumulative payments per period.
Given we have 52 periods in the year,
The first few periods of the year may contain zero, and the final periods of the year (as yet) contain zero.
The values, although cumulative, may go down or up from one period to the next.
I want to find the last entered number in the list.
      e.g. Typical example:
Col A, rows 1 to 52 will contain the integers 1 to 52
      Col B rows 1 to 9 will contain 0
      Col B rows 10 to 12 contain 23.50, 57.00, 36.50
      Col B rows 13 to 52 will contain 0
The number I want from this list is 36.50 as that was the last entered value

I have no other indicator as to which period was the last period
I cannot obviosuly use MAX as the numbers may go down
Counting number of zeros is not helpful because zeros appear before and after our numbers.

      any help appreciated.
      Thanks
      alan

How about having the following in C1
      =ROW()*(B10)
      and dragging down
=MAX(C:C) will then give you the last row number containing non-zero.

The following will return the value (rather than the row number)
      =INDIRECT(“B”&MAX(C:C))

    • in reply to: Home Network Anomaly #1231315

I have 3 laptops all connected to a 2WIRE (2701HGV-E Gateway) ADSL broadband modem connection in a Home/Office environment.

All was great until last Monday (and I have absolutely no idea why it started, i.e. what changed), when network connectivity became a complete nightmare.

      Any clues/suggesting/spells? Thanks.
      Brian

Have you turned the 2WIRE router off and on again ?

    • in reply to: Synchronising directories on more than two PCs #1229385

      This is a real-life ‘puzzle’!

      Problem 1

I have three PCs, A, B and C, each of which contains a directory DIR to which changes (additions, updates and deletions) may be made by that PC during the day.

I am interested at the end of each day in ensuring that the DIR directory on each PC contains exactly the same files at exactly the same update levels.

      .

If syncs are done on the basis of newer replaces older, what you will do is lose any updates made by any two of the PCs.

If PC A, B & C start with the same files

      A updates file X at 10:00
B updates its version of X at 10:30
C updates its version of X at 11:00

A syncs with B, so loses its changes to X
B syncs with C, so loses its changes to X
A syncs with B, so loses B’s changes to X, and now has the same version of X as C.

      Wouldn’t that be a problem?

    • in reply to: Printing tent labels with Word 2003 #1227573

Thanks!! Should I get the rotation handle when I insert WordArt into Word? I’m not. Also, shouldn’t this still work on a 3W x1H label?

I found I needed to set it in front of text to get the rotation handle

    • in reply to: Printing tent labels with Word 2003 #1227529

I need to figure this out by tomorrow, so if anyone has any ideas other than running the label through the printer twice, please let me know. Thanks!

I am attaching the template I’m using. It is Avery 5309, downloaded from Avery.com.

Hope this isn’t too late. If you make the text a Word Art object, and place it in front of text on the page, you can rotate it.

See how I’ve done it here.

    • in reply to: Need Excel to show error for empty cells #1227526

I have a spreadsheet that I send out and it is returned to me filled in. The filled-in values are used then in subsequent calculations on that same spreadsheet.

I’ve just realized that if one of the users neglects to fill in a cell, Excel treats it like a zero, and I have no way to know it was not filled in unless I happen to see it.

Is there a way to have Excel give an error (or some other heads-up message) for unfilled-in cells?
I don’t want the error message to appear in the cell that the users fill in, I would like the error to appear in the subsequent calculations that the filled-in values are used in.

      Thanks

Could you use conditional formatting on the cells that need to be filled in so that they are shaded if not filled?

    • in reply to: What causes the spinning circle? #1226063

I think something is hosed in my OS. I just rebooted a couple of times while updating software, and I started seeing sluggishness, spinny circles, and “(Not Responding)” applications within a few minutes of rebooting — with CPU only 40-50% busy and only 1.4GB RAM in use. It shouldn’t start running out of memory until it hits at least 2-2.2GB.

I think it’s something with the system itself. I’m pretty sure the system is clean malware-wise. I’m running Security Essentials and I just ran a Malwarebytes scan of my system. Everything is clean. As far as I can tell the system is in great shape — except it runs like molasses.

Maybe I just need to start over and re-install Vista. Again.

EDIT: It’s worse than I thought. I just rebooted again. All I had running was Thunderbird (plus whatever background processes), with less than 1GB in use, and I started getting spinning circles and “(Not Responding)” with that. This OS is just hosed. **SIGH** I’d be tempted to wipe it and install Win7 but this laptop is probably on its last legs, and I don’t want to buy Win7 if I’m going to have to buy another laptop in a few months anyway. But I don’t particularly want to reinstall Vista either.

I reinstalled Vista and it was a LOT less painful than I expected. Yes, back everything up before you start, but you may find that it keeps all your documents complete anyway. Yes, you’ll have to reinstall your programs, but the outcome will be a machine that was just as slick as it ever was.

    • in reply to: Using “Text, To, Columns” #1224493

Here’s one for the master loungers. I have a file of several hundred records which are text delimited with “double quotes” and the field delimiters are commas. A sample such as
      “THE JUNKYARD, INC.”,”121 N TRASH ST”,”REFUSEHILLS KS 99999-0000″
Using the standard Text To Columns button in the menu guides you through the paces of selecting the field (double quotes) and column (comma) characters. All is well except when there is an embedded field character within the text delimiters such as in my example where the comma follows the word JUNKYARD. When this happens the “INC” appears in its own column instead of staying with the company name. I’ve searched TechNet without success and the options in Excel with no luck. Is there some option somewhere that turns on or off ignoring a column delimiter when embedded? I’m glad you guys are here to make up for either my ignorance or M$ ‘s forgetfulness.

      Thanks

You could change “,” for some other symbol and delimit the text on that instead.

in excel 2007 how can i lock the width of a column? maually? and using code

Protecting the sheet will prevent users from changing the width, but it may be more than you need.

    • in reply to: Reassessing and retuning Google's Chrome #1223746

It should be declared when posting product endorsements, how much the product costs. This is not a free product.

Since it was described as ‘inexpensive’, I don’t think anyone should be surprised that it’s not free!

    • in reply to: Sheet displays formulas, not values #1223134

      Hello,

This is a switch. Use [Control] + [~]. Control key plus tilde key pressed together.

Switch turns formulas on for display and printing. Then Switch forumuls off.

      Patsy

I find that Ctrl + ~ converts numbers to dates
Ctrl + ` (key next to ‘1’ unshifted) toggles formula view.
