    • in reply to: How to suppress document map? #1248240

I’m referring to the set of page thumbnails that appear on the left side of the window when a document is opened. I don’t know what it’s really called because I’ve never wanted to use it.

A few weeks ago Word 2003 spontaneously began displaying this thing every time I open a file. How do I make it stop?

If it is the document map, it’s toogled by a command in the View menu.

However, that generally shows a list of headings etc rather than thumbnails.

You can always try renaming the normal.dot as OLDnormal.dot (rather than deleting it) and seeing if it helps. If not, you can always reinstate the old.

    • in reply to: Anyone knows how to convert icod to avi or wmv? #1247397

      Hi everyone

I have a file in icod format, which I believe is one of Apple’s proprietary video formats just like .mov files, that I want to covert to a Windows video format such as avi or wmv. No matter how I tried or which converting programs I used, nothing worked, and no video player, not Quicktime and not even VLCPlayer could play it properly.

Anyone knows how to do this?

      TIA

Googling indicates that icod is a Mac codec, so you’ll have to get someone with a mac to convert it.

    • in reply to: External HD in Computer #1247046

I have an external powered hard drive which is seen and behaves normally in Computers with one Win 7 computer but not the other. The computer gives a recognition sound when I connect it, it appears in Devices and Printers, it appears on the eject symbol, but there is no sign of it in Computers and hence it is unusable (on this computer only). Anyone know the cure?

Have you tried a different USB port and/or cable?

    • in reply to: Place to upload photos for download #1245879

at at some point I will use some of these photos in a slideshow, projected on a large screen, so I really need as good a resolution as I can get.
      I’ll keep looking.

You only need as good resolution as the projector can handle – so 2Mpx images should be fine. Compression artefacts may be an issue, but are seriously unlikely to be a problem.

    • in reply to: Moving a program from C: Drive to external drive #1245638

      Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Pro. Revo Uninstaller was put on my C: drive in a folder named VS Revo Group. I would like to move it to my external D: drive, and thus keep my C: drive as free as possible for the operating system and its updates. Can I safely go in my C: drive and drag the VS Revo Group folder to my D: drive? Thank you.

Any registry entries that point to the C: drive folder will fail if you simply drag the VS Revo Group to the D: drive

If I were you I’d see if you can reinstall the program (check out if there is an Advanced or Custom Install option) directly onto the D: drive.

Is there a particular reason why you want to keep the C: drive for the OS only?

    • in reply to: excel 2003 conditional format #1244283

      [hi all,

Not sure what you want for cell = 100, but this does what you want (works in Excel 2007 – should be similar in 2003)

    • in reply to: Windows 7 backup #1244169

Thanks Ted, your image-making books right along and must be pretty much maxing out the write speed to the USB external (~40 seconds per gig) in order to leave enough time for validation. I should probably try the latest version of Workstation and see if its any faster.

The production system I just did took 14 hrs. and 43 minutes to image the 74 gig (misreported earlier as 64) system partition, finishing a scant 41 miniutes before it went back to work. I wonder how Acronis deals with imaging if a system is actively adding gigabytes of data?

      Anyway, same time next year!

It seems to me that the problem isn’t Acronis, but the bottleneck that is your remote USB drive.

Why not write and verify the image to a fast access HDD (whether a secondary HDD on the machine itself, or a proper networked drive), and then copy the image file at a more leisurely pace to the external USB drive?

Or upgrade to an USB2 port to increase the write speed.

    • in reply to: How to password-protect an external hard drive #1243874

encryption is probably your best bet.
      Examples:
      T r u e C r y p t
      AxCrypt File Encryption for Windows

Do both of these need to have the program installed on every computer used to view the encrypted drive ?

    • in reply to: Animation effect in Powerpoint needed #1241444

I am trying to create an effect for our logo on the first slide of a presentation in Powerpoint 2007. I’ve used Photoshop to separate the logo into 3 different parts. The first two parts I fade in, then I want the last part, which is in the shape of a curved arrow, like a semi circular arc, to appear like it is being drawn progressively, from the tail end to the tip. I’ve been trying to do it with a freeform motion path using a background colored shape that is covering the arrow, but it is getting difficult to get it right.

Is there an easier way to do this?

      Thanks

Could you make an animated gif for the third part?
Start a new powerpoint presentation and use a dozen slides or so to create the effect you want.
Then Save the presentation as Gif format (selecting to save every slide)
The series of gifs can then be loaded into an animation manager (My version of Paint Shop Pro came with one) and saved as a ‘run once’ animated gif.

    • in reply to: Picture file renaming #1241291

I guess I misunderstood your problem. The symptoms you are describing are very strange. Has this been going on for a while or did it just start? Any recent updates? This does not sound like virus activity, but who knows.

it sounds to me as though there is some kind of refresh going on which is affecting the folder view. This may be viral related, but I do wonder if it’s some other software.

Have you started using some sort of photo cataloging software recently that might be interacting with the folder while you are working on it? Are you using third party software to download inages from the camera to the folder, and is this still running when you have the problem?

    • in reply to: Picture file renaming #1241177

      Jerry,

Yes, I think I’ve tried every conceivable method. It’s weird.

If you want to get rid of the annoyance

      Have you tried :-

[*]Moving the folder off the desktop?
[*]Setting up a new folder on the desktop to receive your camera photos?
    • in reply to: single click on quick access prints to pdf? #1240210

Hello. With Word 2007 I can save directly to .PDF without having to ‘print’ to a driver like in the old days. Can I have a button on the QAT to work like quickprint does for my default printer? That way I could save many clicks. Thanks in Advance. Frank

In Customise QAT, if you look at the Office Menu commands, you can include the “Publish and PDF or XPS” command.

    • in reply to: Protecting inserted signatures #1238669

      HI

We have several documents that are distributed outside the organisation and have pictures of senior managers signatures inserted.

Without creating a form and protecting it is there any way we can prevent the signatures being copied off the documents?

Given that anyone could just scan or photograph the document and copy the image from that I don’t know if there is any real benefit from trying to protect the signatures in that way.

Why not ask them to produce a ‘fake’ signature for publication, or get Senior Manager A to ‘sign’ as Senior Manager B and so on…
