Sounds like the PC is no longer automatically firing-up the FinePix Viewer software when your friend connects the camera and switches it on.

He should be able to start the software manually via the start menu to allow him to download the pictures. I’d recommend that he connects the camera before starting the software, otherwise it won’t recognise the camera as a drive.

      compute An interesting development.
I took the PCI Wi-fi card out a couple of days ago and the machine was fine; Needing to transfer some files over yesterday evening I re-made the connection using the LAN cable this time, using the network wizard to connect the machines.

This morning the XP machine wouldn’t start again, so it’s not the Wi-Fi card, its the Network confused

Now, does anyone have a clue what I can try next ?

Interesting – I’d honestly expected that was hard coded.
Looking at that registry path, there are 4 settings
      1 http://www.%s.com
      2 http://www.%s.org
      3 http://www.%s.net
      4 http://www.%s.edu

does anyone know how to access the alterative values?

My Dad’s XP Pro machine had problems opening Help (as well as a number of other IE related problems). I checked the Event Log and identified the component that was failing. A quick search on Google identified this as a common fault. It turned out that some software he’d installed had started the Speech Recognition Language component. Since the component had been started but not configured it was failing when called.
Using Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings > Language > Advanced allowed me to remove the components and all was sorted.

In your case, the problem may not be the same, but the lesson is to use the system event viewer to identify which component is failing and follow it up on Google.

The wording is set on the folder options.
Open an explorer window and go to Tools | Folder Options, select the File Types tab and scroll down to the JPG extension.
Click the Advanced button and it will allow you to change the description.

I’m just interested in why you say the OmniPage Pro application “should not be in” the list of applications available for opening jpegs.

It’s meant to be a list of applications that might be useful, and I can imagine that being able to open a jpeg directly with your OCR software could be very useful sometimes

For a quick solution I’d be very tempted to open up both boxes, remove the HDD from the old machine and temporarily install it into the new machine’s secondary slot. Copy the data you need over to the new machine’s C: drive. Once everything has been copied over you can restore the disk in the old machine.

For a longer term solution, Lan cards and cable are cheap, reliable and give you the ability to back up critical data across both machines.
