    • in reply to: Table of Contents – Pick up Header Text #522763

I had a similar problem to this once. I found that I did in fact have to bring the chapter heading out of the header and into the main text, but since I used the “Different First Page” option in Page Setup, it wasn’t so painful. Since the first page has its own setup, you can leave the odd and even headers alone, and they won’t be affected by what’s on the first page of each chapter. Being able to reformat the first page knowing it wasn’t going to affect the other headers was a very important factor for me at the time, but I don’t know if your circumstances are similar. HTH.

When you create documentation for products that start with small letters that are not capitalized at the start of a sentence (such as icWORKSHOP, or if your company name starts with one, like mPortal), you notice very quickly how cramped and confusing it looks to start a sentence with one of these words after leaving only one space after the previous sentence. This reason alone was sufficient for me to switch back to the two spaces after period convention.

    • in reply to: Small Caps in Customized Numbering #516685

I can’t disprove your toast theory. I tried inserting an AutoNum field after the word “Chapter” and that solved the small caps problem because the “Chatper” text could be formatted any way I wanted it, but then I could no longer use “chapter number preceding” type figure and page numbering. Instead of Figure 1-1 the first figure in chapter 1 became Figure 0-1. So then I tried formatting the whole line, autonum field and all, using Bullets & Numbering with the number formatted to a hidden font. This looked great until I looked at Print Preview, which changed the small caps Trebuchet font to some mysterious font in all small letters. It was weird. Back in Page Layout mode, with paragraph marks turned off, the word “Chapter” was in the correct Trebuchet small caps, but with the marks turned on, it changed to an undefined font right in front of my eyes.

In the Autoformat As You Type tab, Headings is unchecked, but Headings is checked in the Autoformat tab, as is Preserve Styles. I’ll keep an eye on these settings to see if they become culprits!
      Thx, Geo

Thanks for the input, Dave. As I responded to Phil, she now claims to have success with the latest template I sent. I hope to find out exactly how she opened the “problem” template tonight when I attempt to call her — there’s no substitute for the good old phone call sometimes.

Thanks so much for your response, Phil. Some of the options you mentioned I was not familiar with. I’m keeping all of this valuable info in a safe place because it can really save a lone writer’s ass! By the way, I heard back from my Indian client today and she claims that she is having success with the latest template I sent her. It was one where I renamed all the styles to have unique names, plus I incorporated a lot of Charles’ info that he sent me as well.
      You guys are great!!!

Update styles based on use? I don’t know where that option is. If you mean the Automatically Update box in the Modify Style dialog, that is something I have not checked.
Charles, thanks for the superb info on creating a template and using Word styles. It’ll help me greatly!!!
