      Andrew,
Thanks for the quick response. Using your macro is much easier than mucking around with the Cross-reference dialog!

      Andrew,
Your macro is a great timesaver. How can I modify the code so that the cross-reference gets inserted as a hyperlink?

Thanks, Hans! The Options.UseCharacterUnit=False code solved the problem and gave the tech writer control over his ruler units. We’re satisfied even though neither of us could figure out which dialog box the problematic “Use character units” check box resides in.

When the Restart Numbering option grays out, I’ve found that pressing the Enter key to drop the offensive line down to the next line usually reactivates the option (I’m using Word 2000). Then, after selecting the Restart Numbering option, I arrow up and delete the previous line. It’s not very elegant, but it’s great in a pinch and almost always works for me.

    • in reply to: Table sort problems (2000/SR1) #941714

      Stuart,
My table sort isn’t performing that way. The 1.1.1.1.1 and 1.3 entries are not staying in the same place. Maybe it has something to do with the version of Word.
We’ll simply have to consider this to be another interesting undocumented Word feature. Thanks again for looking into this for me.

Thanks, Andrew. Using the autonumbering to pad the digits and then changing them back to the original format later sounds like a good idea.

      Stuart / Andrew:
Thanks to both of you for your input. I just met with the tech writer of the document.
Stuart, padding the requirement numbers with leading zeroes is not an option. The tabled requirements are taken from ReqPro and no changes to the numbering are acceptable. I’m assuming there is no way to use your method and somehow hide the zeroes.
Andrew, I can see that you added a TOC which orders the numbers correctly, but I don’t see how you used TC fields to do so. Also, I don’t see how I could integrate such a TOC into the actual table, which has 6 columns (my sample doc only included a small example of column 1). The way I understand how your method would work is that I would overwrite my column 1 with the results of the TOC. But if I did so, wouldn’t all the data in the remaining columns be mismatched to what’s in column 1? For example, column 2 includes cross-refs to all the bookmark texts.
Also, no one has commented on why the two tables in my attachment produced different results when sorted in identical ways.

    • in reply to: Cross-reference needs to be colon-free (2000/SR1) #926840

      Thanks, Hans & Stuart,
I didn’t see how it could be done either. I guess I could fake a colon after the word “Appendix” in the heading by using a little text box with a colon in it. On second thought, I think I’ll just push for a colon-ectomy from the powers that be.

Thanks, Stuart. Your caption method works, but I would have to reformat the Table of Figures to conform to the govt’s table format (that I never showed you!-my bad)
I’m fine using the QUOTE/SEQ code (of jscher’s) / Create bookmarks / Sort the summary table approach. I just tested it and it works beautifully. It’s gonna save lots of aggravation! Thanks all!

Yes, I put a bookmark around each field. Then in the summary table I use cross-refs to the bookmarks, one row for each cross-ref. But this table of cross-refs goes out of numerical order when the TBD codes are rearranged. The TBD codes themselves do renumber themselves correctly using jscher’s method.
Granted it’s not that big a deal to rearrange the rows in the summary table. But if there is an easy method to get these cross-refs to arrange themselves numerically by the TBD numbers they reference, I’d like to know what it is.

Thanks, jscher. I never would have thought of that. It works beautifully for inserting the TBD codes!
If anyone out there does know how to do REFs to this { QUOTE TBD{ =({ SEQ TBD * ARABIC }) # “000” } * MERGEFORMAT } field, I would appreciate hearing from you because it would simplify my TBD summary table.
