The problem appears to be isolated to this one file, and to the tab that had the STOCKHISTORY call.  Since Excel didn’t offer any hints as to what caused the error, I just deleted the offending tab and rebuilt it from scratch.  That seems to have fixed it.

Right, sorry.  I forgot I was supposed to note if I posted elsewhere.

Thanks Deanna! I noticed HWMonitor didn’t show my fans. Then I remembered my laptop has been showing a bogus “no fans detected” error lately — that’s probably why.

Any idea what might cause it, and if I can fix it? I’ve already replaced the fans in this 6-yr-old laptop — twice? — and they’re starting to make noise again …

Perfect, thanks.  Then I won’t worry about the warning message from Update.  I’ll assume auto-updating will keep me current, since I don’t even remember the last time I manually checked and found an update.

Thank you.  Do I have to worry about blocking bugfix / security updates?

No ideas?  I would hate to have to reinstall Windows to fix this, but it’s a real problem.

FWIW:  the problem kept getting worse, until it was happening every day or so.  I finally gave up and did a Windows “Refresh” — re-installing the OS while leaving my files intact.  A month later I’m still trying to reconstruct my environment the way I wanted it, but — no hangs.  Whatever was causing the problem was cleared up by the Refresh.

Of course, the system just bluescreened ….  hadn’t done that in at least a year or two.  Ya wins some, ya loses some…

Thanks.  I just wish the system was still responsive when I remote in.  I can generally see and pan around on the desktop.  But the system is extremely non-cooperative.  Mouse clicks don’t generally work.  Sometimes I can right-click on the Start button and initiate a shutdown, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a successful shutdown.  Once I got the “these apps are preventing” page, but that’s it.  Usually it stops responding at all after a few clicks.

In the last day or two I noticed another sign that the system is “kinda alive” when it’s frozen — plugging/unplugging USB devices plays the plug/unplug sound.  But that doesn’t do me much good.

I misspoke!!  I posted the first thread in tenforums in Aug 2019.  I just checked my records and I returned the first laptop in Feb 2018, and bought the replacement in Oct 2018.  I’ve had this beastie longer than I realized…  Now I’m not sure if the problem ever happened on the first laptop.  It could possibly be something wonky with this particular unit.

I’ve tried several BIOS releases so that shouldn’t be it.  It could be Windoze but why does it just happen to me?  There must be something specific about my setup.

Your suggestion to disconnect the external monitor is a good one.  I’ve had the problem occur with 2-3 different monitors, but…  it’s easy enough to try.  I’ll unplug it at night, and re-attach it in the morning.  I’ll let you know what I find.  Thanks for the idea!

Ah.  Sorry, wasn’t aware of that requirement.  Yes, I’ve posted it several places — also on tenforums.com.  Once in January, once in August 2019.

It’s REALLY annoying, I have lost a lot of unsaved work and a lot of time re-doing setups, and I’ve been fishing all over for a solution.  For years.

I’d rather not pitch this fairly-new laptop (the 2019 post was for a later-returned/replaced model), but geeze…

Your image link appears to be broken somehow. Can you give us a text hint about what was new today?

Huh.  That’s odd, it looks fine to me.

The message says:  “Another session for your user is blocked notifying Local Session Manager for 2466 minutes, so we are unable to log you in. Do you want to force logoff that session to continue?” 2466 minutes (1.7 days) was apparently the last time it hung. :-\

      @tfw
, I saw Fred’s article, but that’s an entirely different behavior.

    • I should have clarified:  I’m looking for players on Windows & Android, so Vox is out.

I’ve used VLC and MPC and IMHO both fit in the “clunky” category.

I’ll check out MediaMonkey and Music Bee.  Thanks for the suggestions!

    • I ripped all my CDs to FLAC and MP3 (with full metadata, separate folders, etc) years ago, but I haven’t done much with the resulting files.  I’ve tried several player options but all seemed clunky.  What’s a good player with iTunes-like features?

    • in reply to: Audio sync / delay issues #2279048

Well, bother.  I watched a movie and it seemed OK.  I thought I maybe saw a little lag but by the end of the movie it was fine.

Then I watched another, and almost immediately the sound was out of sync.

Did I need to reboot after turning off that hardware-acceleration setting, or anything like that?

    • in reply to: Audio sync / delay issues #2278884

I had not done that.  I’ve turned it off now.  So far so good — I will report back if it does/doesn’t seem to fix the problem.  Thanks @NetDef!
