Hi Tracy – Thanks for the news update. Unlike some of the other respondents, I would welcome more Linux articles (possibly a sister publication?). As a “semi-pro” user of both Linux and Ubuntu, I have found the Windows Secrets articles particularly useful, because pitched to my level of expertise. Most Linux/Ubuntu resources I have found assume a higher level of software savvy than I have or can probably attain at age 75.

Hi Fred – A quick further question about powerline networking: I live in a condo apartment in a building containing 48 units, each with its own electric meter housed centrally within the building. Would powerline network signals in my condo find their way into the other units in the building? Thanks, Clayton Foster

Belated thanks for your detailed and helpful response. I will indeed check with Microsoft on the activation issue.
      Happy Holidays. Clayton

I have an aging XP desktop, in which I installed a second 600 GB drive and Ubuntu Linux. XP is on a much smaller drive, and since I’m new to the idea of virtualization, I’m wondering if you could help me with some questions: 1) If I virtualize XP within Ubuntu, is it still subject to all the malware threats and patches XP users currently encounter? 2) I have an XP-SP2 Operating System disc I bought several years ago to reinstall the the system in a notebook. Can I use that disc and the license from my desktop XP (I’d remove the currently-active XP from the old drive) to activate the virtual system? 3) The currently-active XP system is updated to SP-3. If the virtual system would still be subject to viruses and malware, is there still a way to update the virtual system to SP3? I’d like to start with a clean O/S, rather than moving the existing one, if possible. Thanks

I’ve not run into any that have caused a problem. If your timeframe is such that waiting a couple of weeks won’t hurt, SP-1 is going to be available to the public on Feb. 22. If you have an MSDN or Technet subscription it will be available on Feb. 16.

Belated thanks, Joe. I’ll wait for SP-1.

I’m close to going online with a Win7 desktop for the first time. I rely on Susan Bradley’s recommendations to install / avoid microsoft updates. Is there a list or database anywhere of updates to avoid, other than going back through 2 years’ worth of Windows Secrets articles?
