I can’t say for XP but in Off’97 by default it’s C:Program FilesMicrosoft Officetemplates. Check in XL to see where your installation is set to look for user templates. Failing that, do a ‘Search Files or Folders’ for *.xlt and see what it comes up with.

Don’t forget to save it as an .XLT instead of an .XLS if you want to use it as a true template.

    • in reply to: Where is the Genius Office Assistant? (Office XP) #1788988

Not having been blessed with XP, my guess is that it’s the same as for ’97:

Have a look on the installation CD for a folder called ‘ValuPack’. In here is another folder called ‘Actors’. Look for a file within called ‘Genius.act’ and copy it to the ‘Actors’ folder on your C: drive (on my machine using ’97 it’s in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeActors).

For some reason on mine, each assistant I’ve loaded in appears twice in the Gallery, but only one instance of each actually works. Is this another feature?

This is being recited this from memory as I don’t have my copy to hand to give you the accurate instructions, so apologies for any inaccuracies but the general gist is hopefully correct.

EILEEN & ALL – Is there ANY way of making a customised Office Assistant? I feel Lex most deserving of this recognition. Oh, the exclusivity of it!

      P.S. Scribble rules.

    • in reply to: M/BOARD PROBLEM #545680

Let’s start from the top. What CPU & memory are you using? Overclocking?

Is the FDD recognised in the BIOS setup or am I right in understanding that you can’t even get this far any more? You say that it booted OK, is this from floppy or HDD? Are there any beeps made when you power up the machine? If so, how many and how long?

Are you using an AGP graphics card? Have you tried reseating it and attaching it to the board securely?

Have you tried carefully reseating everything on the board, making sure you’re properly earthed etc.? Is the fan heat sink in good contact with the CPU? Are any of the CPU pins bent over?

Have you connected the floppy cable the right way round at the drive end?

Do you have another compatible system you can test individual components on?

Sorry for all the questions, but it may save dozens of to-and-fro posts for this thread.

      Ian,

Got it! My my, what a peach it is. A7A266 with either 2xDDR SDRAM to a max 2GB or 3xSDRAM to a max of 3GB, 200/266MHz FSB, full support for Athlon 1.4GHz, woof woof woof. (Sorry, but I’ve been a K6-2 user for the past year).

No quibbles from the supplier about the return. I just explained that with hindsight it makes more sense for me to go for the Asus board over the Gigabyte (which in itself seemed a perfectly reasonable board for the four days I had it).

Another BIG plus with Asus though is that the user manual is in real english. It reads smoothly, unlike the Gigabyte which is in ‘translated english’. OK fair enough they’re both Taiwanese companies, but I also like the explanations behind some of the BIOS settings giving details of exactly what the function behind the setting is rather than just whether it is enabled by default or not.

Now all I’ve got to do is find something in my day-to-day PC usage that can test this thing to it’s limit. This may take some time.

If you’re still out there, I use http://www.driverguide.com. Register with them for free instant access and you’re away. I would give you the user name and p/w here, but that wouldn’t be quite right considering their offering a free site anyway, would it?

OTOH, with the cost of internals now at ‘spare change’ level, here’s some possible uses for your ISA:

      – Door wedge
      – Pizza slicer
      – Wonky desk corrector

    • in reply to: DDR memory questions #545182

Thanks for the reply, Ian. I wish I had paid more attention to the Asus mb model number – I’ve had a look on their site for one that has both SDRAM and DDR capability but no luck so far. The slots have different numbers of pins, don’t they? So it wouldn’t be a case of using the same slots for different types of sticks, then the board detects the difference, would it?? Am I getting distant now? I could call the supplier but this is a crowded office, if you know what I mean. I’m presuming I saw right and didn’t imagine it…

      Tks again.

      That’s the one.

      Tks.

Thanks guys. Exit Sub was what I was looking for.

      See, easy isn’t it?
