Just a thought, but are you sure it was formatted with DOS in the first place. Windows won’t recognise a drive formatted in, say, OS2 will it?

Come to think of it, would Windows even recognise it at all if the drive was partitioned but unformatted?

The smell of caramel rising from the gently-warming components is enough to make me think about marketing ‘heat sink scents’. Just think, a small slither of something scented that slips sandwiched somehow by the separate fins of the sink. The fan then wafts it around and the case fan exudes it into your immediate environment. Available in banana, cherry and marshmallow.

      Herein my fortune lies…

I’ll let you know how I get on with scrubbing the board. I think a combination of my wife’s toothbrush, a mild detergent solution and warmed bottled water may do it, then into the airing cupboard for a couple of days.

      I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks Andrew. I do try looking around a bit before I submit a post….honest.

One idea would be to reduce the page margins. You could reduce them from 2.5cm to 2cm and not really notice much difference in readability.

Another idea is to reduce the line spacing for each paragraph. E.G. If using 12pt text, a spacing change to ‘Exactly, 10pt’ is still very readable.

Is your printer capable of duplex (double-sided) printing?

bravo – to anyone who’s saving a tree or two.

      Hi Neno,

Glad to know you found a workaround for the problem. Who cares if it’s a ‘kludge’, so long as the end result is OK?

As for the font(s), try here: http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/wells/fonts.htm and scroll down a couple of pages. There’s a download hyperlink for all the fonts shown on the page in one zip file.

      Cheerio.

Am I right in thinking you’d like to delete the phonetic pronounciations that normally come after each word?

Is the phonetic text displayed in the same font used for the rest of the document or is it in a True Type phonetic font?

First, select just a couple of pages of the dictionary and paste them into a new document, just in case something goes wrong. Work on the copy for the rest of this.

If it is a true phonetic font, select ‘Edit, Find’ from the pull-down menu and click the ‘replace’ tab.
Click on the ‘More’ button to the right of the window.
Keep the ‘Find What’ box empty and select ‘Font’ from the ‘Format’ button.
Select the phonetic font from the list and click OK.
Back in the ‘Find And Replace’ window, make sure there is nothing in the ‘Replace with’ field.
Click ‘Replace’ and ensure the correct action is being performed. If this is OK, click ‘Replace All’ to perform the action for the whole document.

I hope this makes sense. Maybe I could have worded it better. Let me know if you need any further explanation.

      Steve,

IMHO I would say this is extremely unlikely. I’m no physics wizard, but I would imagine the lining would have to be made of some pretty special stuff in order to do this, especially if the charge had to go through the plastic casing to get to the m/b. Maybe there would be a very slight possibility if it were to enter via one of the ports at the rear or side, but I still very much doubt it.

Are you sure the notebook hadn’t gone into standby mode? Maybe the battery is faulty. Is it a Ni-Cd or Ni-Mh type? I remember the older style nicads always had memory problems if not fully and properly discharged before recharging.

What anti-static precautions did you take when you removed the memory, or is it in the form of a (relatively protected) Flash PCMCIA card?

My 2cents is that it was just a Friday afternoon m/b.

      Sure you can.

Create the query and click on the toolbar button that looks like an ‘E’ (says Totals when you hover the mouse over it).
This will add an extra line to the query grid allowing you to group your data by field and to get totals for suitable values. Try it with your existing data and see what the different settings can do.

Save this query, then create an report based on it. Using the Auto-Report wizard is a good idea.

Have a look at the new report in design view and you’ll see how it’s been put together.

    • in reply to: DVD player not working #548133

      Pardon me for asking, but….

Are you sure it’s a DVD drive and not just a CD-ROM?

What have you done to try to play a DVD-ROM?

Do you see the drive in My Computer? In Device Manager??

Does the disk not play at all or does it ‘judder’?

Can you play an Audio CD? Can you use a Data CD?

Sorry ’bout all the questions, but I think it’s the only way we’ll get to the bottom of this…

Thanks guys, that’s the ticket. Seems so easy now that I’m chuckling.

Had a problem with things not working but that was due to manually-applied fills taking precedence over the cond. fmt.

      Have a good one!

      Hey-ho, never mind.

I think Al’s “add spaces” idea will do for a bodge. It doesn’t need to be too pretty this time.

      Cheers folks!

If it’s only for two machines, why not use a crossover patch cable? An economy 10/100 NIC can be picked up for less than the price of a good meal. Like someone said though, the PC Card could be pricey.

    • in reply to: Booting Problem #546349

      Here’s my 2cents:

The problem about “the power not turning off” is because of the ATX power supply. Press and hold the button in for a few seconds and it will power down. If you could get into the BIOS power management settings, you would see there is an area to control this function.

I’m sure most of us have been caught out by this function at some time over the past few years, so don’t feel to bad about it.
