Thanks for that guys. A few very handy tid-bits at that site.

My favourite has to be a little addition called PathCopyEx which will copy your current file/folder name to Clipboard from Explorer. How handy is THAT to anyone whose directory structure goes any more than a few levels deep??

Do yourself a favour and pop in to see what Mike Lin’s got on offer.

      Thanks for the replies.

Charlotte: I know what you mean. To be honest, I o/c’d just to see what all the fuss was about and just forgot to put it back. I mean, just how fast do you want this thing to go??!!?? To be honest the sort of things I use my machine for could easily be handled by a humble K6-2, but it was on a plate at a good price. It would be an option if I could upgrade the d/b to 2K, but I’m helping someone who’s company haven’t made the great leap into the 21st century yet.

Firstly, I don’t know much about flat panels, but here’s a few suggestions:

      – Have you tried changing the refresh rate of the video card? Somewhere around 75 – 85Hz is best.
      – Try a 16-bit colour depth, same resolution.
      – Are you using XP drivers for the ATi card?
      – Have you checked the MS Hardware Compatibility List to ensure the card is XP compatible?

If none of these has any effect, return your machine to the supplier. I don’t advise you open the case and re-seat the video card, as this may invalidate your warranty.

      Questions:
      – Have you changed the specification of the machine since you bought it?
      – Have you upgraded the O/S, for example from W2K to XP since buying it?
      – Did it ever work properly, like when it was on display in the shop?

    • in reply to: CD Writer recommendations #568138

Many thanks to everyone for the advice.

In the end I opted for the LG 16x. I had a few problems with a persistent DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop message, always whenever designing a form in Access for some strange reason, but I decided to reformat and rebuild as my last installation wasn’t that long ago. MSKB says it was something to do with shared IRQ’s and/or Easy CD Creator (??!!??). Anyway, the drive works fine and I was able to back up my critical stuff and restore with no problems.

      Thanks again.

Try this. I found it at http://www.DriverGuide.com. If you’re not registered with them, I’d recommend you pop along. It costs nothing to join up and you don’t have to give a credit card number, just name, e-mail address, etc. I used their beta Advanced Search and typed in “AEF 360TX addtron macronix tiger” all on one line. There were a few mentions of a driver for the AEF-330TX – maybe this could be worth a shot if all else fails?

      Ian & Suitcase,

Thanks for the suggestions. It wouldn’t surprise me if the FDD has gone west – it was salvaged from an old 486 many years ago. Ho hum, another paperweight…

    • in reply to: FDD not recognising disk change #565322

      Tks for the reply Leif.

Yes, F5. I have also tried shutting down the application, then restarting it and repeating what I was trying to do before.

The thing that really gets me is that it doesn’t even recognise the change of disk from the command line of a DOS box. I’ve had occasions where going off somewhere into the C: directory structure before re-accessing the A: drive for the second time works, almost as if giving it an instruction other than ‘A:’ then ‘DIR A:’ allows it to sort itself out.

It’s almost as if the machine is being too smart for it’s own good and thinking that it knows full well the contents of the A: drive because it only accessed the disk a few instructions ago, so it doesn’t bother checking again.

      Grrrrrrrrr!

Hope you don’t mind me jumping in here, but something in leafy’s last posting struck a chord with me.

I’ve recently moved a couple of miles or so out of town (although the area is anything but rural) and my connected speeds now range from 26-32k. Nothing has changed with the spec of my machine (W2K SP1, 1.4 Athlon, 256MB RAM, internal Conexant PCI 56k h/w modem). I have one telephone line which has an extension into the bedroom and a junction box from that to the modem – well within the REN max limit of 4.

Very occasionally it will say it has connected to Freeserve (UK) at a reported 115k, but nothing happens. All I can do is hang up and redial in the hope of connecting at 26-32k. I signed up with another ‘free internet access – pay for local rate calls only’ ISP and got very similar speeds. At my old location, I would get anywhere from 44-56k. Am I having this problem solely because I am using a ‘free’ ISP and therefore getting a second-rate connection? I tried mailing Freeserve to ask them about this problem and you can imagine how far that got me.

I’ve checked for updated drivers for just about everything, checked the telephone wiring, disconnected everything from the line except the modem, tried a different ISP, checked speed using http://www.testmyspeed.com, but still no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas or pointers in the right direction?

      Thanks.

      Andrew –

I haven’t had an opportunity to try this yet, but I’ll have a look in the next few days when my workload is under control again.

Thanks very much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Try looking in the system Policy Editor (Poledit.exe): open the system registry and select ‘Local Computer’. Look for an entry along the lines of ‘Run at Startup’. I don’t have it loaded on this machine here at work so I’m afraid I can’t help much more than this.
Sorry if this information turns out to be wrong or misleading, but it’s from (rusty) memory.

    • in reply to: Sending hyperlink via e-mail (Excel ’97) #553862

Sorry, wrong teminology. What I meant was to send a shortcut in a mail pointing the user to the original file which is saved on a network volume. I can’t run the risk of someone saving the sent workbook to their C: drive, editing it and then saving it to the network and knocking out any changes anyone else may have made.

      Thanks, Andrew.

    • in reply to: Duplicate workbooks??!!?? (Excel ’97) #552546

You’re quite right, of course. I’m just baffled how this setting would survive following an Excel shutdown and re-start? Any idea’s how I did this in the first place? I -think- it was a slip ‘o’ the mouse.

      Tks for the help.

    • in reply to: Duplicate workbooks??!!?? (Excel ’97) #552536

      Wassim, thanks for the reply.

In the Windows menu, there are two copies of the same workbook, one called abc.xls:1 and one called abc.xls:2.

When I try to close just one, both close.

I’ve checked in ‘Save As, Options’ to see if there is a check-mark for making a backup – there isn’t.

I had a look in the Xlstart folder too, but nothing out of the ordinary there.

    • in reply to: Spare Computer #552043

I’ve found myself in the same situation a while ago too. It was suggested to me I dedicate it to being an MP3 server. Have WinAmp or similar loading from startup in Windows, and only the bare-bones of the OS. I still haven’t had the time to try it.
