    • in reply to: WIFI connects but no Internet using 40mhz? #1425590

I didn’t see anything in the specs that stated 5 GHz support, but the 40 Mhz issue is annoying, but not uncommon (http://superuser.com/questions/143578/how-do-i-get-a-300mbps-connection-over-802-11n).

Thanks. I had assumed 5ghz was possible given it’s a fairly new laptop but I was wrong. Re the 40mhz – I’ve just about given up but your link gave me another option – that being to check WMM settings. I have a feeling that it is disabled so I’ll check that later & see what it does.

Yes latest drivers downloaded from Realtek site. Strangely if I go to the Asus site there are no download for a Realtek chip in that model.

I’ve done a bit more experimenting and found that the laptop will occasional get internet access using 40mhz dual channel but usually won’t. I tried flushing the DNS which seemed to work for a while but when I checked later it was back to normal – connected to wifi but no internet. Very frustrating.

Is the danger confined to gadgets which might be inected that you download or can it apply to gadgets you already use that are virus free? I like my gadgets 🙁

Whilst it may be satisfying you run the risk of harrasment afterwards. I’ve heard of a case where the spammer really got a bee in his bonnet, found the phone number, and sent annoying phone calls at all hours just to annoy (& intimidate). Best to ignore & move on. That being said I do enjoy many of the inventive hoax emails & so regularly browse the spam box for a laugh.

    • in reply to: Slow win 7 explorer search #1298168

I get the same thing but on local explorer searches as well as networked. Can be very frustrating waiting miniutes for what should be seconds. I’m guessing it might be analysing the files under the folder you’ve selected?

Thanks geek. That did the trick.

    • in reply to: » Reformat old Win7 installation disc with MBR #1282015

Thanks ted. I had a go at fixing things last night before i saw your response and got into a horrible pickle. Partition Wizard free couldn’t change my old win7 disc from dynamic to basic so I ended up cleaning & formatting the old win7 disc via dos diskpart commands and thought all was going well until I restarted and couldn’t get win7 to boot (bootmgr is missing). Tried a few tricks such as win7 repair etc but no good. So I’d reinstall Win7 on the new disc. The Win7 install told me that “setup was unable to create a new system partition…etc” on either the new disc or the old disc. Oh ffs! Tried a few dos tools but all do not recognise the new disc – presumably because it is a ssd drive on sata3 & they don’t have the drivers (nb. the win7 install disc recognises it but would not let me install on it). Could have tried movong the disc to a sata2 channel but would mean pulling the computer out of it’s enclosure etc. Got sick of wasting time on possible solutions so went back to a pre-mess disc image & restored win7 to the old disc. Thankfully that worked & from inside win7 I reformatted the new ssd disc which was shown as “raw” in storage management. So now I am back to where i was a few days ago before the new build was started. Might start a new thread to ask for help re getting win7 on the new disk and removing the old win7 installation.

Thanks. When you say “correct the MBR” can you be more specific?

    • in reply to: Access report design extremely slow #1223890

Yes as it happens it is a report populated from a crosstab query using data from another query!

    • in reply to: Access report design extremely slow #1223741

Yes I could change the query to return no data. It seems a strange requirement however.
