AskWoody LoungerAbsolutely, it won’t damage the drive just slow down the system by defragging while you are on it.
ATA drives in conjunction with modern OS’ will automatically do housekeeping cleanup of drives as well as health inspection during times of idleness. No need to lift a finger. And mama told you it was bad to be so idle.

AskWoody LoungerMay 10, 2016 at 4:32 pm in reply to: I thought my daughter clicked on ransomware – it was Win10 installer #1563234I read that there are about 300 million W10 devices out there now.
I wonder how many W7 PCs are left ?
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp
On a percentage basis from when this offer began Martin, not too many. 5% gains for Win10 from Win8 and Win7 each. And most big box makers are shipping Win10 exclusively now. That probably adds another 6-9% to the total and will continue its slow growth like other MS OS before it as new PCs are purchased to replace old ones. . Rather successful for MS. But a lot of Win7 users are holding out or not compatible for upgrade.
Linux’s slow climb is what gives me hope that a small subset will continue to oppose the deep state.

AskWoody LoungerWow. Nice job ruling things out and getting confusing results. I haven;t got a clue. But PaulT’s right, try your network disconnected from the Internet (including any cable modem or other box connecting to your ISP).
If it still happens then you know the Internet is not involved.
If it does not happen, pretty good evidence something is happening from your ISP, their/the connection box or something coming through your Internet connection.

AskWoody LoungerInteresting. I was unaware of this issue that had circulated six months ago. Intel has not updated its CPU-HSF instructions. I initially smelled a class action lawsuits….denial, finger pointing….not pretty, but I note it is a big hullabaloo the middle of December and then silence since.
The issue is the Skylake processor’s PCB is noticeably thinner than previous CPU releases. Heavy 3rd party heat sinks that screw down have cause warping and damage to the CPU corners and the CPU socket pins in their corners when apparently jolted during transport. Does not seem to effect spring mounted HSFs. Gravity on the mass combined with transmitted impact force and already close to tolerance HSF clamping apparently is involved in exceeding Intel’s specified loads.

AskWoody LoungerSince ASUS told me that the RAM I had was not supported ….
So it wasn’t the RAM model I linked in the bottom paragraph?
Since I found that the corners of the CPU had been bent, I fear that somehow I did not get it reformed so that it would contact at every point….
BENT????!!!! Just mentioning this now? Bent how? I have never heard anyone describe a CPU as having its corners bent. Bent is not a description that ends well in tech support with the exception of the MB’s appearance after clamping the heat sink down. That is the only situation where bent is normal.
Inadequate contact with the socket can definitely be causing the issue, but the CPU should not be bent in any manner. It is called a zero insertion force (ZIF) socket for a reason. So I think we need an explanation of what you mean by “bent.” And “reformed.”
edit: What model CPU? The Skylake’s are thin. Did you use a 3rd party heat sink fan (HSF) (I know some of the newest high end CPUs don’t come with a Intel HSF?) If so, what make and model number? Are you clamping it down too hard, if possible? or too non-uniform (or the HSF is not completely snapped into place on all four corners if a snap in model)?

AskWoody LoungerMy understanding is the transformation must occur by July 29th. But you can image your present drive, swap the OS, then image that, then re-image your old setup and be ready to go if you decide much later to swap to Win10.

AskWoody Lounger…. and ASMedia port (not accessible due to GPU length). …
You do know those cards come out right? And your system has a nice HD Graphics 530 onboard graphics perfect for diagnostic use?
-
WSFascist Nation
AskWoody LoungerAny chance you ever installed automotive diagnostic software on that PC? I’ll admit, that would make more sense on a laptop.
If the security app keeps flagging it you can create a verified image of your drive, make sure and then let the security app quarantine the dll. See if you have any changes in behavior or if the dll reappears.

AskWoody LoungerCheck seating of cables.
Substitute a known working SATA cable.
Try it on another SATA power connector, preferably on another line.
Move the drive and cable to another PC and see if it is recognized. Less desirable, but if another PC is not available yu can use the ASMedia controller on your MB.
RMA drive.

AskWoody LoungerMay 5, 2016 at 10:57 am in reply to: Recommended KB 3133977 patch can cause Asus PCs to freeze #1562379Well Joe, that should hopefully end in three months and I can reset my brother’s PC to auto update rather than drop by every week or two and add the important updates. Thank god for GWX Control Panel or we’d all have Win10 by now.

AskWoody LoungerIt’s not a bug . . . it’s an unintended feature.
