Thanks Argus, I ran dxdiag and indeed it says that version 11 is installed.

AFAIK DirectX 10 was installed by the laptop manufacturer and according to specs at the NVIDIA website the graphics card in question uses this version. I don’t ever remember seeing any message saying I could update to DirectX 11, however if it’s possible I’m willing to try as I spoke too soon, I’ve just booted again and guess what?, the black icons are back

About 17 hours left, this site is giving away a free Paragon partition manager today:

DirectX 10 seems to be correct for the graphics card in question. Anyway I eventually found this:

      http://exinor.wordpress.com/2007/07/07/black-desktop-icons-resolved/

The hard thing was booting in safe mode because F8 did nothing, in the end I pressed F5 and once inside I was invited to press F8 to enter safe mode, this worked. After shutting down again and rebooting normally the icons are back to normal (at least for now).

As I said in my original post I have updated the driver, I did this by going to the manufacturer’s site and using automatic detection, the laptop (HP Pavilion dv7) is only a few weeks old and I would be surprised if it wasn’t up to the task, however here are the details:

Display adapter type NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M
Total available graphics memory 2811 MB
      Dedicated graphics memory 1024 MB
      Dedicated system memory 0 MB
      Shared system memory 1787 MB
      Display adapter driver version 8.17.11.9562
      Primary monitor resolution 1600×900
      Secondary monitor resolution 1680×1050
      DirectX version DirectX 10

      Thanks

Sorry I was distracted and for some reason thought you were talking about Excel, over here in a table in Word 2007 Ctrl+tab works as advertised and inserts a tab so I am a little mystified as to why it won’t work for you, have you tried in more than one document, i.e. are you sure it always happens and is not just an isolated case possibly caused by a rogue document?

I am using Win 7 64-bit and if I press Ctrl+tab in an Excel 2007 cell nothing happens either. That said I’m not sure I fully understand the question, what exactly are you trying to achieve when you say “enter a tab”?

My password is a 10-digit mixture of letters and numbers that I distinctly recall was generated by the system during homegroup setup, you say you don’t remember this happening, if a network is actually showing perhaps you could try uninstalling/deleting it and starting again from scratch.

What exactly are you trying to send (scanned document, Word file) and where is this document located? May be a question of giving permission to share folders, I haven’t used the fax in Win 7 as the laptop has no modem but the message suggests to me that the problem is not the fax programme itself.

Another great (and free) application is Foobar2000, there are one or two add-ons to install but with these in place it will do virtually anything (ripping into and converting various formats including FLAC, tagging, on-line database lookup, file rename, etc., etc.), I was using the trial version of Magic MP3 Tagger and in the end dumped it because it was no longer needed.
