    • in reply to: Software to update drivers – good idea or not? #1263440

Thanks for the tip about FileHippo that immediately showed me several programmes needing an update, shame the update didn’t fix Acrobat Reader, version 9 has refused to update itself for as long as I can remember and I’ve now got 10 that displays an “unknown software exception” every time it’s opened, although it seems to work OK after that. 😡

Anyone know why Gmail inserts my address in the To field when I hit the reply button instead of the sender of the original email? It wasn’t always like that but I’ve finally had it with working around.

I hardly ever send mail from the Web but I did last week and exactly the same thing happened to me. At the time I thought I must have done something wrong, but it seems not.

Bob, not sure why you have a problem, I just tried using the link you gave and downloaded a 198 kb file called VLCSetup.exe.

    • in reply to: Adobe Reader 9 update #1251704

Foxit Reader still does not permit copy-paste in an easy or obvious way. You can, however, “select text” in the tools menu (or use the shortcut: Alt + 6) and then “copy to clip board” and then paste it into another document in the usual way……. Although, having said that, if you click on “click to view this document as a text file”, you can THEN select, copy and paste the document text in the “usual” windows way (Ctrl + C and Ctrl + v).

Thanks Peter, this vaguely rang a bell with me but I seem to remember that some of the shortcuts were broken, here is a link to the thread that dates back to January 2007, in addition to this select and copy issue, there was also no provision for a decent search tool, another absolute must for me.

    • in reply to: Adobe Reader 9 update #1251688

The update installed properly for me as well. Be advised however that this only installed on my 32 Bit version of IE 9 beta. It will not, did not install on my 64 Bit version of IE 9 beta. If you need to open a .pdf document in IE using Acrobat Reader, you must be using your 32 Bit browser for now.

That’s interesting Ted, I have 64-bit Win 7 and my AR is stuck at 9.3.1, I keep getting the install update message but after a few seconds I am informed that update failed, I was using IE8 and the same is true now I’ve switched to IE9 beta. That said I seem to remember that I recently encountered exactly the same problem on my backup machine, a 32-bit Vista laptop running IE8. I remember Googling the problem and it was suggested that AR should be uninstalled and reinstalled. I did this on my Win 7 laptop and it made no difference.

As regards Foxit Reader, I tried it a few years ago and immediately complained that it wouldn’t allow you to copy and paste text, something quite possible with AR. Does anyone know if this issue has been addressed?

      Thanks

    • in reply to: External Hard Drive Needs Formatting Message #1251686

This may be related, I run Win 7 and recently bought a WD Essentials 1.5 TB drive, after a while and at regular intervals I get the same “your drive needs formatting” message although it doesn’t, sometimes I just click cancel and the message goes away immediately but on other occasions it just keeps coming back every few seconds. Rebooting usually cures this. At the end of the day there is nothing wrong with the drive and my suspicion is that this annoying message was introduced by a recent Windows Update.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Media Player 12 Problem #1251685

I was interested to test this and did so briefly with WMP 12 and my preferred Foobar and VLC player, I played the first three songs of the same album and noticed no drop outs at any stage in any of them, however I confirm that all three jumped straight into the next track without a pause (is this the default behaviour?). In the past I did have some issues with files that simply wouldn’t play in one player but would in another and found this related to tags (I think created by old or incompatible versions of other players), the problem being solved by simply retagging. I certainly don’t ever remember encountering the problem you have experienced.

BTW, another thing I don’t like about WMP is that it won’t play FLAC by default, although I think you can install a CODEC to solve this.

    • in reply to: No wireless connection #1248773

Unfortunately she doesn’t have her original XP disks, and without connecting I cannot download and install updates.

I even directly connected the laptop to the cable modem, but although it recognizes there is a connection and IPconfig shows an IP address. It still doesn’t connect.

So if I got you right, it looks like the wireless connection is not the issue as it won’t work using Ethernet either, has this laptop ever been connected to the Internet, if so what XP service packs are installed? It was a long time ago but I seem to remember from personal experience that when XP first came out there issues when connecting to a network that involved a lot of fiddling around to solve (I have a vague recollectiuon of having to set a unique static IP address) but most of these were sorted when the service packs came out.

Unless the laptop is extremely old it shouldn’t be a problem connecting if the wi-fi is indeed switched on. Is XP fully patched because if not this might be one possible cause?

    • in reply to: Shtcut to show/hide paragraph marks #1239543

Confirmed, I did not have the show paragraph marks box ticked, as soon as I tick it Ctrl+Shift+8 no longer has any effect.

    • in reply to: Shtcut to show/hide paragraph marks #1239470

Why doesn’t ctrl + Shift + 8 work on my version of Word 2007 to show/hide paragraph marks?

It’s supposed to be Ctrl+Shift+*, obviously that’s basically the same as Ctrl+Shift+8, anyway it works over here

    • in reply to: Black desktop icons #1238383

Thanks very much Gerald, I installed Ultimate Windows Tweaker V2 and followed the advice in the thread, ticking the remove arrows box even though they were in theory already removed.

Anyway I’ve rebooted 3 times and so far no black icons so maybe the problem is properly fixed this time, I’ll let you know if they do come back.

      regards

    • in reply to: Black desktop icons #1238339

Having read another thread recently it would appear my continuing problem is due to removing the arrows from the shortcut icons, trouble is I can’t remember what I did to remove them in the first place. I saw several different tips for a registry edit but after inspection they did not appear relevant and/or correct so, in a nutshell, what is the registry key that needs editing and how?

      Thanks

    • in reply to: Can't connect XP laptop to network #1237619

      Repartition, Reformat, Reinstall…..

Fotunately it hasn’t come to that, AVG along with MBAM and RKILL appear to have seen off all viruses, I’ve managed to download SP3 and numerous updates and I’ve actually got the wireless to work with the Sitecom adapter with encryption on, still no joy with the internal wireless but that’s probably a lost cause. Anyway things are a hundred times better than they were last night.

      Thanks again for your help!

Can you elaborate a liitle, did CC finish its scan, if so what did it find and did you fix issues? When you say it won’t boot, what happens exactly, can you not start in safe mode either?
