      Thank you, Woody! You (and your various related sites and newsletters) have provided me with a vast amount of knowledge, over the years, and you will be missed.

      Hi, Legare;

      Thanks for the explanation. Still seems a little “wrong” to me (not your explanation, but the way Excel works): If they are going to call them macros (when opening the file), then the Macro tool should allow you to delete them. But maybe that’s just me. 🙂

      Hi, Steve;

      I guess I can understand that they might actually be considered macros, but then why do they not show under any of the macro tools that are provided to remove them. shrug

      I have removed them, and the user tells me all is well.

      Thanks;

    • in reply to: Remove Macros (Excel 2000) #980926

      Hi, Hans;
      I tried the “Edit, Go To, Special, Objects”, but no objects were found. On the other hand, all but one of the sheets DO contain the following, when I double-click them in the Project screen (or click View Code):
      *****
      Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Excel.Range)

      End Sub
      *****
      This appeared to be causing the false macro warning, because I simply highlighted and deleted them, and after saving and reopening, there was no macro warning! clapping

      Thanks for the hints: do you forsee any problems with deleting those entries?

      Hi:
      I am jumping into this thread because I have tried the method you suggest, but when I look for “Modules” in Project Explorer I don’t have any; I only have the “Microsoft Excel Objects”. Obviously, this makes it difficult to “Remove module”. confused In addition, I have tried to copy the sheets to a new book, in the hopes that the macros would not survive the copy process, but it seems they do: after saving that workbook, and re-opening it, it again tells me that macros exist, and asks me if I want to disable or enable them.Is it possible that I am not actually dealing with a macro, but with some other type of object that “appears” to be a macro, but is not?

      Yet another good idea! devil Thanks.

      Well, that certainly seems to confirm that it is not possible. 🙂 Thanks for the link, though…

      Yes! That works! Although there are a couple of steps I will have to train the users to follow on receipt: They must “Accept” the invitation, then choose whether to “Respond” to it. Obviously I don’t want to receive 50 meeting acceptance emails, so I will have to explain that they don’t need to respond, but I can explain all of that in the original invitation. Should work, with a little luck and training…

      Thanks for all the ideas, guys;

    • in reply to: troublesome pst files (Outlook 2003) #935146

      For User 1, does the .pst file show in the Data File Management screen? If so, you might be able to remove it there, but the other thing I have done in the past is to “give it the file it is looking for”. Outlook is admittedly stupid about how it deals with “missing” .pst files; it will insist on opening them, even if they don’t exist. What you can do, is copy another small .pst file, give it the name that Outlook is looking for, and put it in the folder that Outlook is looking in. Outlook should then open it, and once successfully open, you can right-click and “Close” it, which will prevent Outlook from opening it in the future. The file can then be deleted.

      User 2, I am afraid I can not help with…

      Yes, the Messenger Service might have been an alternative, but I would have to look into it more: I believe it is now disabled by default, and I’m not sure I can target a specific group of users that way. My plan is to send the email to a distribution group, and therefore target just the users of the application on that server. As for the Calendar option, unfortunately we use POP3 mail, not IMAP, so there is no shared Calendar. Yet another good idea, though. 🙂 Another option to consider. Thanks.

      I did look at Tasks as an option, but when I delegate (assuming that’s the same as “Assign Task”), it only allows for a date, not a time. Is there something I am missing? As per my example, I need at worst a 1 hr window for the flag to pop up, preferably 15 minutes. And of course I know that some users will simply delete the message, negating the whole concept, but hey, they’ll learn when they are kicked off without further warning. sneaky

      Point taken, but as a network administrator, I want to be able to send a notice regarding server maintenance to my users, with a reminder 15 minutes before “down-time” to remind them to log off. As it DOES appear in their list with the flag and reminder set, and it DOES turn red when expired, it is strange (to me) that it doesn’t do the one little extra step of actually reminding them. 🙂

      Well, it’s not a pretty solution, but it does indeed work! clapping (I still think Microsoft should work on that…)

      Thanks for the help! bow

    • in reply to: File As settings (Outlok 2002 SP1) #644818

      Thanks, Andrew, but this is not exactly what I am after.
      I can sort by last name or first name, using the View, Current View, Customize settings, but that does not change the “File As” field. What I am experiencing it that even if sorted by Last name, some Contacts show up as “John Smith”, instead of “Smith, John”, although it IS listed under “S” alphabetically. This makes it very difficult to quickly find a name, since at a quick glance, “Smith” does not jump out when displayed after “John”. I could change the View to display the Last Name field as the first item, but the header of the Address Cards display would then only show the Last Name, while using File As shows Last, First in the header, which is preferable, as long as they are all the same, which bring us back, full circle, to the purpose of this post sigh . Any other ideas? help
