Did not use the eject command nor disable disk caching. It was on hot swapping where the problem occurred. The only difference to the system is that the RAID was on the motherboard whereas now it is on am Adaptec card. Whether that contributed is unknown. We spent hours trying to stabilize this computer, it is great now and only improved when the caddie was removed. As I said I have 4 units 2 completely unopened. They were the best from reviews.

My system was/is populated with 5 internal HDD and the caddy, the boot drive is RAID 1 (imaged) as in the previous post I used only 1 of the caddies and two drawers, these drawers had two different brand drives from memory a Seagate 500 and a WD 300. Every time the caddy was removed the system would give a BSOD. However if you changed the drawer while the system was off it would boot perfectly, it would not hot swap.
The M/B is an asus M2N32-SLI DELUXE the graphic below shows the analysis from Belarc.
This is all to say when we removed the Caddy, the system has been stable.
      They were SATA.
As explained earlier drive C is RAID
Drive D, E & F is one physical drive partitioned
Drive G & H is one physical drive partitioned
      Drive I is one drive.
The other header on the board was used for the caddy.
The last computer course I attended was basically controlled with caddies, hence my direction. I have only heard of one other person experiencing the problems similar to mine.
QUESTION If the BIOS on the m/b detects the HDD on boot how does it change when different drives are inserted hot?

    • in reply to: Removable hard disk caddies: the good, the bad? #1189604

I designed my current system on using these items, alas not good results. We came to the decision that they were BIOS dependent. Yes I know of people using them, particularly in a classroom situation, in my system nothing but problems.
I purchased 4 units because they are sold as a unit not components. Two units remain unopened.
They were on my research the best available in Australia.

    • in reply to: 'Search' view #1187193

Sorry Ed, that doesn’t work on my system and I don’t know that there IS a way to do it via Search.

What you described sets Windows Explorer’s view to whatever you choose and set for all folders. However, that only works when browsing through FOLDERS with Win Explorer. As soon as you choose to search, the view “might” change depending on the type of file you’re searching, such as graphics files.

I have my Explorer set to the method you described, but if I search for .PNG or some other, I get thumbnails (tiles?) and I don’t know how to change that. There may be a registry modification but I’m not aware of one.

Just played around with what you say, I must have been lucky in the past.
I agree totally with what you say however, cannot understand why though.

    • in reply to: 'Search' view #1187130

Go to the View you want, generally selected via the icon adjacent to the left of the Folders icon.

Then Select Tools>Folder Options go to the View Tab
Click the apply to all folders button

I agree, I personally use Steinberg Clean (as mentioned in a earlier post in this thread, unfortunately it is no longer available. Part of that package is a produce called WaveLab Lite. The point I was trying to make is the necessity of using a Wave Editor. Most people who try to achieve LP to CD fall into the trap of having one track. My problem is it is very time consuming.
The process can be broken into 4 simple steps
      1. Record
      2. Clean
      3. Cut into tracks. (I manually do this because the automatic break can be sloppy)
      4. Burn to Cd

    • in reply to: Playing/Recording Music on Windows systems #1186940

Sorry if this is a dupe but my first reply on this new bulletin board seems to have vanished.

I’d second the wave editor recomendation. I use an app called Wave Corrector. It saves the turntable’s output as a wave file, that is uncompressed, around 100 Mb for a 40 min record. The application can then process the wave file. It can automatically (and manually) remove the pops and clicks from the vinyl; filter hiss and rumble; automatically (or manually) file track boundaries; normalise levels; etc. It can then output to various other file formats such as the compressed MP3 format (around 40 Mb per LP). (You will need to add a freeware addin to get MP3 output).

      HTH

To add a little more on the subject, there is a difference between wave and wav
Certainly the program Wave Corrector can save in the wav format. However the difference is that an LP playing say 5 tracks gives only one wav file, that file needs to be cleaned etc but it is still one file, one track of five songs. It then needs to be cut into segments.
That is where the Wave program comes into play, you can manually change the start to (my preference) 1 sec. Then track to the end of the song and allow 1 sec after, It is then simply a task of highlighting, cutting and pasting that song into a new wav file and starting to attack song 2. For security of the data I copy the original recorded five song wav file to a stick, that allows me to make a mistake or two.
A search on the words how to use a wave editor showed enough hits to make it interesting.
A look at http://www.fleximusic.com/waveditor/overview.htm shows some screen captures.
Yes a wave editor does, or can do a lot more than cut a file into segments. word processors do a lot more than enable to user to type a thank you note.

      Hello again, colleagues all,

Things have progressed a little with the assistance of my son (who works for CSC and is lead support for a client who is one of the world’s biggest mining companies) we have managed to get it going. However, we have struck a new problem which someone out there may be able to help me with.
The way Audacity works, it records the entire audio stream into what it calls a project file. You can play this back and listen to the entire record without regard to the tracks. If, while you are recording the music, you note the elapsed times between tracks, you can start and pause the project playback at points which you know are between tracks. You can also pick it up on the oscilloscope graphic, but this is slightly less accurate. You can then output the material between the check points into the sound file of your choice; WAV, MP or whatever.
We have done this for quite a few tracks, but Windows Media Player (which my son is not rapt in) won’t play it back. Could any of you knowledgeable people out there recommend any other MP3 software. In particular, I am interested in a program that will allow treble/bass adjustment, as some of my test pieces have come out a little shriller than I remember them being originally.

What you need is a wave editor, there are many variations on the web, A search on “wave editor” makes it interesting.
I learned on Steinbergs CLEAN which came with WaveLab Lite, WaveLab is available (and expensive) but Clean has been discontinued.
Another good product is http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/ called WavePad. The collection from AVS http://www.avs4you.com/audio.aspx is worthwhile.
I have a variety on my system as each problem arises I find a new product that soles that problem.
The original Sound Blaster cards SB16, SB32 etc all came with wave editors.
Like yourself I am converting all my LP’s Cassettes to CD and am more than satisfied with the results. Have a look at my bio, I am at Ringwood East, and will accept e-mails.
Sorry for the mess, I had trouble getting the URL’s to be active.

    • in reply to: Can't Delete A File #1182690

On my daughter’s laptop apparently a jpeg file has become corrupt and I cannot delete it. No matter how I highlight it it freezes the computer to the point that only holding the power button down for a few seconds will get it to reboot. The task manager won’t come up either and it freezes a deep scan by McAfee also. I even tried to delete the file in the safe mode and still the computer freezes. Any suggestions on how I can get this file off her computer for her?

The computer is not at my location so any suggestions will take a little longer to try than normal just so you know I am not ignoring any suggestions.

      Thanks

I use Unlocker or Who Lock Me both achieve the same results but in a different way.

    • in reply to: Ashampoo Anniversary #1181874

I am registered for their newsletter since I own Ashampoo. I received an email overnight about a 10th anniversary “special” (as they tend to do). It says free download and registration key for FIVE of their products, including Burning Studio.

I was going to post the link here until I realized that, because it was emailed to ME, it leads directly into my account at their web site. So that’s obviously a no-no. So this turns out to be not much of an announcement unless you’re already a customer and don’t subscribe to their newsletters. You might want to change that – I don’t get too many and they’re not pests.

Unfortunately, I don’t see this special on the public web page – at least so far! Keep an eye out…

Hi Al, when you you take over my company? I have been an Ashampoo user for many years and have found their software very good.
I also received the e-mail and have taken advantage of the 5 programs, in some cases they are not the current version.
I agree with you, register with Ashampoo they offer many good Freebies.
I sent an e-mail to them asking how you received the free registrations:
      My message
I have today received your birthday offer of 5 free programs in celebration of your 10th. birthdayI can get through to the download links but cannot get the free full version keys. How do I achieve this task?
      Their reply
      Hi,

antoher possibility is to download and install the products. If you register the software you will get a free key too.
      Hope this helps

I’m trying to create mailing labels in Word 2007 using Mail Merge and
need to increase the size of label’s print font. In Word, I use
“Start Mail Merge” and select “Step by Step Mail Merge Wizard”. I can
go through the entire process, but find no way to increase the size of
      the printed font.

Can someone advise as to what I am missing?

      Thanks for any insights.

    • in reply to: random text #1179329

      Welcome to the Lounge!

Make sure that there is no other text on the same line, either before or after the “formula”. Does it work if you type

      =rand()

(without numbers between the parentheses) in an empty paragraph and press Enter?

To further expand on the answer from HansV you can place 2 figures between the parentheses. ie (4,2) This will result in 4 paragraphs each of two sentences. The figures must be separated by a comma.
We used it in Word 1 as a means of starting the classes off at the same point.
It is important to hit the enter key.

I am trying to add a lap top remotely to my network but when I try to connect it asks for a password. I can never recall having set one, is there a way to override or some kind of default. It’s Windows Vista Home Basic. Any help is appreciated.

Is it possibly you have a RAID configuration? If the disks are imaged they must verify in the event of a blackout or other unusual event. It drives me mad after a blackout. My system certainly operates but at a very much reduced speed.
