If http://www.ukatheist.com is the site you are hosting then it is available to me (via broadband) to view. It must just be your router as Rory said!

I can’t for the life of me understand why the modem isnt connected directly into the switch and the second NIC and ICS removed altogether. They only complicate the issue and simple is good don’t you think?

I have 2 computers, a switch and ADSL into the switch. Works a charm!!

I’m with Big Al on this one. Most of the free hosts in this country are bare bones too. To get full control you need to pay for your site. I’m with Netweaver at

I’m using Dreamweaver MX at the moment, but I started out using Frontpage which in my opinion gets slagged off far too much. It helped me get started. I find its table layout much easier to use than Dreamweaver.

I ended up with IIS, PHP and MySQL all hanging together nicely. My problem originally with IIS was that the path to my sites were c:inetpubwwwrootgolf-in-wales.com. If I drop the .com, IIS doesn’t complain so I’m happy now.

      Thanks all for your comments.

    • in reply to: Arrange items in SedTo popup alphabetically? (Win XP SP1) #649175

I presume you are aware that the Send To menu is in fact a folder full of links. I usually trash most of them and add my own. I have noticed however that mine are already sorted alphabetically. To sort them you could remove them all, ie place them in another folder and then add them back in one at a time in the right order. I haven’t done it myself, so it may not work, but may be worth trying. The send to folder is at C:Documents and SettingsSendTo.

Chris, Many loungers seem to be using Zone Alarm which is free at to use home. I should think someone will come to your aid as regards settings.

As promised, I am sending this from home through my broadband connection.

      All the best..

I should think its the speed of your network card to the router. 100 M illion Bits Per S ec.

Do you have a firewall set up? If so it may require some ports to be opened for particular protocols. Since I have several machines at home, I don’t really bother with the firewall because Network Address Translation (NAT) affords me quite good security.

At home I’m on broadband (ADSL 512k) in the UK. I’ll try that tonight and let you know. At work we have a KiloStream N connection, nailed up circuit, operating at 512k and thats no problem…. as you can see!

I don’t want to spoil your fun but can you guys do this in a chat room, it fills the archives with uninteresting (as far as the TITLE goes) drivel which I don’t have time to flick through.

    • in reply to: IIS & Access rights #648190

Thanks for the info. I haven’t forgot you I just don’t get much of a chance to login to this particular machine.

Thanks also for th interest in my Webs. Golf-in-Scotland has been registered for the last 2 years, and now the next 2 by some travel company who have done zilch with it. I might offer them something for it but that doesn’t sit right with me!

What is “Golf in the Kingdom”?

      Cheers

http://popup.jscentral.com[/url%5D provides a free (with credits) or cheap popup menu with great features. See http://www.royalporthcawl.com[/url%5D for an example.

I agree with Catherine, Frontpage served me well (and still does for general page layout). Stick to the basics though and dont get involved with the extras that the Extensions provide. Otherwise I use a Syntax Colouring Text editor and Visual Interdev, with ASP and PHP code thrown in for good measure. I think Dreamweaver could be too complicated for a learner.

      Thanks for the reply Mark;
      >>I take it you’re using the proper URL to access the site on your server machine (i.e. http://Server/WebFolder).
      Mine is http://pc2/golf-in-england.com

      >>Check the box to allow Anonymous access (at the top). Also leave the “Allow IIS to control password” checked.
      Same as you.

      >>”IUSR_ComputerName”
      >>IUSR_PC2. I think this is where I came unstuck. When I get home tonight I’ll check these user rights. I’m pretty sure I haven’t set permissions for IUSR_PC2, just for my own user name.

      Will let you know!

Of course, if you already have the Internet Explorer Icon on the desktop, right mouse click and choose Properties does the same!

    • in reply to: Networking problem (WinXP) #634249

Hi, Until recently I thought that if you took an ethernet product from one manufacturer and connected it to the LAN, it would work with any and all ethenet devices on the LAN. Not so. I have found that some NICs will not interwork with others, so a suggestion is to try a NIC in your machine from another manufacturer.

As a matter of interest, what NICs are you using? We have ‘standardised’ on 3com and intel with no more problems. Some of the cheapest give you what you pay for.
